Greg Oden’s Agent: ‘He’ll Get Back to Being the Greg We Knew’

Oden’s agent does a terrific job of selling his client’s murky future, who just so happens to be angling for a contract extension. The Indy Star reports: “Greg Oden will play next season, his agent said, but whether Oden is wearing a Portland uniform has yet to be determined. Oden’s rehabilitation from a knee injury is a long process, but the point is to allow him to fully recover. ‘He’s focused on keeping his weight down, getting back to figuring out how to stay healthy. I give him a lot of credit for staying motivated to get through all this,” his agent, Mike Conley, said. ‘I know that he’ll play next year, and as long as he keeps his weight down, he’ll get back to being the Greg we knew, being able to run and jump and everything. The thing is keeping him healthy and give him the confidence to play without being scared.’ The 7-foot, 280-pound Oden led Lawrence North High School to three straight state titles and was Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2006. After one season at Ohio State, he was the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft. He has played just 82 games in four pro seasons due to multiple knee injuries. His most recent surgery was in November 2010. Rehabilitation was projected to take up to a year, which would make his return early in the 2011-12 season.”

The key word here being ‘knew’ – which happens to be past tense.

    Thanks for the memories, Greg.

“He’ll get back to being the Greg we knew.” So, is he going back to college? Because the Greg we have known in the NBA is nothing all that special. Injuries, sexting, more injuries, looking like an old man, that is the Greg Oden we know. Is his agent Mike Conley Jr.’s dad?

  • Jeremy

Is his agent Mike Conley Jr.’s dad?

Lol that was a roundabout way to ask if his agent is Mike Conley. Or mike conley sr. :P

    Lmao it just read funny.

nothing to say about greg though

  • Key

Greg is going to south beach for the minimum next yr….

@LDR4 – yep, his agent is Mike Conley Sr. That’s not a bad idea about Greg going back to college. He’s barely played in the NBA and his agent is his friend’s dad. Maybe he hasn’t totally lost all college eligibility and a 5-game redshirt would get him back on the court for the Buckeyes.

Isn’t the “Greg we all knew” the same guy that is constantly injured? I mean, he’s a reclamation project at this point, with a team willing to waste some money on a project player with a limited upside and an injury ravaged career. He’d be a nice piece on a contender if he can stay healthy….but to expect him to be anything more than a 8 and 8 type of guy with good defensive instincts is about all to expect. Miami, Boston, SA, I can see those type of teams making a play for him to either play limited starter minutes or to try and shore up a frail bench core.

He needs to hook up with Queen Latifah (bad basketball movie)

Ewwwwwww, Pee pee showing Greg is back?

  • Zarfan

What else is he supposed to say?

“I think Greg’s career is practically over, but thank God I pulled off that contract for my son. We could barely afford the down payment on our third house.”

  • add

    sixers better pick him up

  • robb

you mean the Greg our grampas knew???

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

he’s going to be injured? that’s the greg oden I know

  • bike

His best bet is to wind up in a backup role playing no more than 20 min/night. He is officialy injury-prone now. Too many injuries for the limited amount of NBA time he has played. The thought that he might get hurt will be in his head the rest of his career.

  • iLL wiLL

    Oden to the Heat.

  • B.C

The Greg we knew?? The Greg we know is the one that gets injured every year.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

So what he’s saying is that he will remain injured…right?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

The Greg Oden who was always sitting on the sideline :)

Imagine if Portland picked up Durant…. What a team that would have been.

  • al29

As the only Trailblazers fan to post on this site, let me say the following: 1) Please, Mr. Cho, do not re-sign Greg Oden for any amount of money; 2) the Blazers should have chosen Durant, but nobody knew that this was the right decision at the time; 3) Brandon Roy is a great guy and a great player, but if the new CBA includes an Allan Houston rule, buy him out and let him walk. The team cannot succeed if it depends on an injury-prone player in any position. Just ask Houston.
