Grizz Owner: ‘This is Pure Luck’

Mike Heisley’s team is headlining a Playoffs for the ages. He may think it’s coincidence, but as we know, you make your own luck. From the Commercial Appeal: “Everyone has been wrong about significant aspects of this team, from management on down. Hollins had so little faith in Tony Allen early in the season that he let him spend whole games on the bench. The Grizzlies had so little faith in O.J. Mayo at the trade deadline that they tried to swap him for Josh McRoberts and a draft pick. ‘I’ve been wrong about a lot of things,’ said owner Mike Heisley. ‘I was wrong about Allen Iverson and we were wrong about Thabeet. I said this when we were bad so I have to say it now, too. A lot of this is pure luck.’”

It’s no such thing as luck at this stage.

I get what he means I think: it’s lucky that they DIDN’T end up shipping out OJ Mayo. It’s lucky that they ended up taking a chance on Tony Allen (not Gay going down though). Make sense?

The Grizzlies have been winning because straight up they’re a good team. There was a little bit of luck in how that team came together.

ha! at least he’s not trying to take credit undeservedly.

Good for Grizz. After watching Lakers lose I’ve gotta pull for underdog.

Sounds like he didn’t think his team was good and they proved him wrong. That’s not luck, in the words of Josh Smith, that’s in your face – just so happens you’re the owner.

Luck doesn’t win you a 7 game series, if I were a Grizzlies player I’d be a little pissed at Heisley.

Grizzlies doing all this without Rudy Gay…imagine how much better they’ll be when he comes back…scary.

Imagine if they didn’t pick Thabeet…

@towelie thats a double edged sword my friend. With him gone, they’ve established Z-Bo as their go to guy, Gay coming back may disrupt that.

luck for you as the owner, but the players have been working their @sses off.

There’s always luck in sports. One ankle tweak can change a series, and so can a make or a miss (look at Kobe’s three against Dallas). There’s always luck in sports.

“not Gay going down though” *pause*
    Sorry, couldn’t help myself.
Anyways, they were stupid for sitting Allen so much. Glad it’s working out now.

    Poor Thabeet. Straight dissed.

He was lucky in how this team got put together and he didn’t screw it up by making a bad trade. How the team is performing as a unit is not luck. To make it to the second round and to take game 1 – that’s just pure performance. There is still a lot of basketball left and IF they make it to the ECF, I’ll be rooting for them.

    lol at enigmatics pause.
marc gasol can ball and while everyone thought the lakers stole pau.. it wasnt as bad as it looked.
i dunno why people sleep on tony allen. hes one of those guys you want on your team (corey brewer is another) and ovington j anthony can ball. I hope when gay comes back it adds to the team rather than ruin the chemistry.

    Co-sign Keep. Very misleading title.

  • Yesse

Yeah, i don’t think he means luck by their success in the playoffs. He is quite lucky that the players are giving the team all they got right now.
