Jason Kidd: Critics Jealous of His Longevity

Everyone, including even some Dallas Mavericks fans, likes to joke about Jason Kidd still playing at such an advanced age (38). We’re all just jealous, claims the seemingly immortal point guard. From the Star-Telegram: “In the first two rounds of the playoffs, Jason Kidd had to chase slower point guards named Andre Miller of the Portland Trail Blazers and Derek Fisher of the Los Angeles Lakers. That won’t be the case for the Dallas Mavericks’ playmaker in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. OKC point guard Russell Westbrook is one of the fastest players in the league from baseline-to-baseline. And that will more than keep Kidd — no spring chicken at age 38 — on his toes. ‘He puts a lot of pressure on the defense when he gets the rebound or he gets the outlet passes,’ Kidd said of the 22-year old Westbrook. ‘He puts a lot of pressure no matter if it’s one, two or three guys back on defense. He has the ability to get in the paint and make things happen. He’s right there with (Chicago’s Derrick) Rose in being able to get from one end to the other in two or three seconds.’ … As for having the chance to even be in position to defend the much younger Westbrook, Kidd has some choice words for those critics who already think he’s going to struggle in this series. ‘They might be right,’ Kidd said. ‘But the big thing is there might be a lot of jealousy that I’m still playing at 38.’”

Kidd plays wise, even though Westbrook goes 200mph for 48 minutes it does hurt OKC more than it benefits them at times. If Durant vs Dirk is a wash then the Mavs will kill them, whoever winns that battle will win the series.

i dunno, i remember westbrook carving up d.fisher a year or so ago and that very nearly swung the thunder/lakers series. ason could be in for a long series.

Yeah, as if he’s gonna guard him for long stretches. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Roddy back for 15 mins/game.
Some nice mismatches in both sides in this WCF, can’t wait.

Completely inaccurate about Kidd having it easy guarding Fish all series he spent a lot of time, i’d say more than anyone else, guarding Kobe in the Lakers series. Lets be honest very few pg’s stay infront of Westbrook for very long, at this level it’s not always about one on one matchups especially when we are talking about slashers. Team defense is important and judging on the first two series’ i’d say Dallas will to pretty good in that respect. That being said i still pick OKC here. Kevin Durant.

both teams are deep and have differing skill sets, so this should be a good one. Coaching will be important in this one and I think the Mavs may have the advantage there.

as a nets fan.. i dnt like jkidd anymore.. his loyalty needs to be checked.. plus he got BScott fired. whatever team he’s on they will always lose. Westbrook is gonna kill him.. plus to all the westbrook critics… westbrook could be better but somtimes Durant gets lockerd up or does not play as hard so he is forced to sometimes. But as far as kidd goes…. nobody’s jealous of a ringless 38 year old

Hell, I like Kidd and I’m jealous of how long he’s played the game…

@AD Byron Scott was a horrible coach to begin with, look at the Cavs. Mavs whooped the Lakers in 4, they’ll drop Oklahoma in 5 tops.

I’m jealous about him playing in the NBA..

  • AD

@cal Byron scott is the reason for the nets to even being in the finals twice… I dnt think horrible coaches when coaco fo the year..

@dsleepy “ason could be in for a long series.”
Kidd was ason a long time ago. He’s developed his J since then.

Yes, I am jealous of how long he’s been playing in the NBA as well. If at all possible, being that neither his critics or I have played in the NBA before. Weird.

Let’s drop the ason thing. Kidd is #3 all-time for 3-pointers made. He’s streaky, but he’s no longer ason, and the Mavs no longer play in allas. Jason has a solid ‘J’, and Dallas plays really good team ‘D’. I enjoy jokes and clever wordplay, but those cracks are outdated by almost a decade.

Nope, let’s keep the “Ason” thing. Let’s me know who here actually watches basketball from a passing glance.

  • BostonBaller

I agree with Cheryl concerning the matchup and it may very well come down to who executes what the coach draws up. MikeC is speaking the truth about Jason’s Jumper, Dallas’ Defense AND the fact that it shows who actually watches and KNOWS the game.

Kidd is just smarter than almost any guard in the league, those smarts mean he could play until he’s 50, and still show these young dicks how to play the game, sic how the game is played
