Kevin McHale Meets With Rockets and Warriors

by Sam Riches / @sam_riches

Kevin McHale could soon be ditching the broadcast booth and returning to the sidelines. After being relieved of his duties as head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves in the summer of 2009, McHale is now being considered by the Golden State Warriors and Houston Rockets to fill their current coaching vacancies.

From Yahoo! Sports:

“Kevin McHale met with Golden State executives Larry Riley and Bob Myers to discuss the Warriors’ head coaching job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Sources called the meeting “informal” and it could turn into a more serious sit-down later with team executives and ownership.

McHale has a more serious second interview with Houston Rockets officials scheduled for later Thursday at the NBA draft combine. He’s one of three finalists for the Rockets’ coaching job, along with Frank and Dallas assistant Dwane Casey.”

McHale’s previous coaching experience has come in the form of two interim stints with the Timberwolves. He posted a 19-12 record after taking over for Flip Saunders in 2004-05 and went 20-43 after replacing Randy Wittman in ’08-09.

It could be considered a risky hire, but McHale has had some time away from the game to improve his X and O’s and his winning pedigree cannot be denied, owning three championship rings and being named one of the NBA’s 50 greatest players of all-time.

just because u have 3 championships and is part of NBA’s 50 greatest players doesn’t mean you should coach. I like him better as a broadcaster

McHale is a terrible coach. NEXT.

Eash. Why? He was a GREAT player, but he claimed to never want to coach and was only forced into it by TWolves ownership. He never cared about practice as a player or defense. Is he really a guy you want as a GM or Coach?

@ClydeSays…McHale was 6x all-defensive team. so much for not caring about defense.
