Kobe ‘Surprised’ by Lakers’ Choice of Mike Brown

Sports Illustrated reports that Kobe was a supporter of Brian Shaw and was surprised that he wasn’t involved in selecting Phil Jackson’s successor: “The source close to the Lakers told SI.com that Lakers star Kobe Bryant was “surprised” by the news, and that he was not a part of the decision-making process. Bryant had been a staunch supporter of Lakers assistant Brian Shaw for the position and remains as such.”

    There will be drama.
But it will be interesting how Brown works if he has a team that is good on every position.

  • tRay

So am I Kobe. So am I.

Now I know why LBJ mentioned Coach Brown during media availability prior to the game yesterday. It seemed out of left field to me, but I guess he was giving his “public” endorsement to the Lakers’ brass. He was asked about his defense and he credited it to “Coach Brown and his staff” and later mentioned Spo and his staff. I had taken that as a slight, but now I know why he said it.

…Well what this in effect means is that Kobe will be the coach of this team. For Brian Shaw I just hope this news means he’ll be coaching back in Oakland. but yeah, Mike Brown’s concept of the triangle offense is letting Lebron control the ball at the top of the key and at both wings.

  • Towelie

    This will not end well.

  • http://slamonline.com The Black Rick Kamla

my one question is why isn’t Mike WOOODSON’s name being mentioned in these coach talks

  • Jred Schott

Kobe wasnt even consulted!?!? Was there some kind of extreme deadline or something?

  • Jeremy

I think it would be good to give him a chance, the Cavs played well and had no one but lebron. They were efficient, and didn’t even need him for more than 3 quarters. As long as they have an assistant coach to come up with key plays, which brown really can’t..

Honestly, I think Kobe might be on his way out.. the Lakers are getting sneaky.

  • SikhWitIt

This is insulting to Brian Shaw, to those on the team that supported him, and to me as a Laker fan. What a joke.

  • Jer dawg

100% agreed! F*** Jim Buss. F*** Lakers and F*** the NBA for running fans thru the ringer with lockout talks. F*** them all!

  • George

I know Kobe is a legend and all that, but why does he have to be consulted. He used to be great, but now he is slow and old at 33. It is about the Lakers winning not Kobe.

  • showtime

Damn Homie, In highschool you was the man homie, what happen to You…Kobe never gettin that 6 now.

  • robb

Could this day be any sh*ttier?

  • Dre81

    I’mma give him a chance

I’m not the type that jumps to conclusions.

He has had time to Come up with a Gameplan since he left Cleveland

  • http://yahoo.com Dre81

I’m Gonna Give Him a Chance
We dont know his gameplan now he has had time to work on a plan since he left cleveland.

and Let’s be honest We need some defense,a Point Guard,A bench, and a back up center

  • HT

@showtime nice J. Cole reference there

  • http://www.tampax.com doyouwantmore

Hey Mike! Run the play. You know the one: Get the ball to your star and wait until something happens.

Goodbye Phil. Your pretentiousness will not be missed.

  • dahon

    trade KOBE now!!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

Mike Brown has a better chance of winning than Dan Gilbert now. That’s funny in unexplainable terms…

  • Ex laker Fan

I was a laker fan up until today. What an insult to B Shaw. He didnt take the cleveland head coaching job last year because the lakers front office told him he would be phil’s successor. Mike brown aint gonna bring any rings to LA. Shaw knows what it takes

  • http://www.slamonline.com/online/other-ballers/international/2010/03/flight-75-dc-to-moscow/ Mitya

Can we get a reality show about this next season?
The Lakers messing up their rep all over the place.

  • LeBron de Con

The reason, Kobe, is that the Lakers had long decided on Mike Brown and so your views were not welcome.

  • http://www.englishman.com Englishman

This nothing short of a massive insult to Brian Shaw! Mike Brown isn’t good enough offensively to lead this current Laker team past the second round. I really hope that B.Shaw gets a head coaching job at another team as he deserves. All the current Lakers and most players in the league respect B.Shaw so why they wouldn’t give him the jbo is beyond me and most people. Complete and utter shambles coming up next season for the Lakers!

  • KSupreme

Shi*ty for Shaw, but maybe this will ignite Kobe to go back to his dominating, individual play. Mike Brown helped out Lebrons in Cleveland, why not Kobe in LA

  • T-Money

this is jim buss flexing his muscles and pissing all around the staples center. he did not want kobe to have a say. he did not want jax’s protégé.

  • Overtime

This is a huge insult to Shaw. And really makes me think that things are going to get blown up.
Either that, or Kobe is going to shoot his way into being considered top guy over Brown.
    Worst choice ever

  • miami6mvp

Give Mike a chance yall act like he’s a horrible coach. he lead the Cavs to the finals and back to back 60+ win seasons? he can coach.

  • dsleepy

I hope this makes Kobe so mad that he forces a trade to Chicago and fills that glaring hole at the 2. I know it’s never going to happen but how awesome would it be, and how ironic at the same time

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

Who gives a crap about shaw. How do you guys know hes all that great lol. He might just very well suck.

“but yeah, Mike Brown’s concept of the triangle offense is letting Lebron control the ball at the top of the key and at both wings.”
    This made my day.

  • 6marjons

    bad choice. really bad choice

  • Eitan Seri-Levi

lol people say trade kobe. he has a no trade clause in his contract and will most likely retire with the lakers. do you guys understand this is kobes first year where hes exited the season without any injuries in 2 seasons? instead of having to get surgery hes going to be working on his game and getting stronger. andrew bynum as well. im sad lakers didnt choose brian shaw, and i hope mike brown fits in well and keeps the triangle. if hes really as good of a defensive coach as they say i will be happy. kobe and friends will be back stronger than ever next year

  • gato

Ok bandwagoners. You can jump off now. The real laker fans will support the lakers no matter what coach, or players they have.

  • rupi

Eitan great point, mike brown knows lebron better than most peoplehe’ll know how to stop lebron come final

Also bshaw should have got the job!

  • LadyLuvsLakers

I hope Brian Shaw stays with My Lakers. Heads up offense, while Brown works on D. In three more years Shaw will have that much more experience and can run the whole thing. Shaw, don’t go, please stay.

  • Frank Williams

All the best for Lakers new coach Mike Brown, he has some giant shoes to fill. Even though my choice was for Brian Shaw for a multitude of reasons, I am on board with the coaches selection.  The Lakers front office has an excellent record on making decisions to keep the Lakers at or near the top of the food chain in the NBA and this selection if we really look at it answers a major issue the Lakers had in 2011, playing some serious defense. The next big issue would be to bring in some young, athletic talent which will complement the returning core of the Lakers (Kobe, Pau, Bynum and Odom).  Mike Brown does have some experience in coaching teams deep into the playoffs and working with talented players.  He coached in Cleveland with one top player and now he will be coaching the Los Angeles Lakers with several top NBA players with multiple rings and having the luxury of creating plays for those players.  He brings a serious defensive mind set that should complement the offense.  The selection is over and now it’s time for Laker Nation to get behind Mike Brown like we have done for Phil Jackson the all the other coaches who worked for this franchise.  Let’s Go Lakers Let’s Go!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Waylonakolipse

How long before Kobe tries to get Brown fired? How long before Pau demands a trade. The Lakers are no longer a title threat.

  • MsRita

Kobe and Fisher should retire your both too Old to play with those young bucks. Basketball years over 30 are old. Just like over 30 is advanced Maternal age. No more babies or Basketball. We want championships not old out of date people that we truly we love to hate. Maybe the Owner wants you gone since he did not want your help or input.

  • gregor

This is going to end badly…

  • CG8

really??? all you people talking BS about your own lakers maybe you should ask yourselves if you are true laker fans of course we always want the best and always want to win but good coach or not i stick by my team no matter what..you fake laker fans ..you havent seen what the lakers are going to do next season and already doubting and being negative….LETS GO BROWN WE TRUE LAKERS FANS GOT HOPE IN YOU put us in the game coach

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

…Mike Brown is the PERFECT COACH to have….when your expecting a lockout and no games to be played.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

“Mike Brown’s concept of the triangle offense is letting Lebron control the ball at the top of the key and at both wings.”
    Hahaha. Black Rick wins.

  • Yesse

If Kobe doesn’t like something, it’s not gonna end well..

  • Mike From Spain

“Surprised” is the politically correct form of “WTF????”

  • http://dude Chukaz

i wonder if by surprised kobe meant mad as f*ck, cuz that’s how i feel. We’re not gonna get D12 now. We might end up trading bynum and odom for elton brand and some Charmin so that gasol won’t be the softest thing on the court

  • mike

@MsRita, you are an idiot and don’t know what the hell you are talking about, go jump on someone else’s bandwagaon and leave the posts to real sports fans

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

This makes me miss Phil already. LMAO @ Chukaz

The simple fact we hired him just makes me anxious about next season. I’m more anxious than right after Shaq left back in ’04. (the anxious that means “greatly worried”, not “eager”)

  • BlackMamba is G.O.A.T

Bandwagoners bow down! Kobe isn’t going anywhere and the Lakers will be in the Finals next season. Mike Brown is a good coach with expierience under his belt. Kobe will not fold like Labrenda did when he played for brown. He is the coach for the Lakers so like it or not, true Laker fans stick it out no matter what. I’m just damn glad that it’s not Mike Dunleavy!

  • Wayne

I agree w/ Frank Williams that the selection is over and done with but Jim Buss could have interviewed more candidates instead of just one. It’ll be interesting what kind of offense will be implemented. Don’t count on the triangle continuing. Phil Jackson and Jim Buss never got along. Once Phil retired, Jim started to remove anything associated to Phil. This was the reason Brian Shaw was even considered for the coaching position. I wouldn’t be surprised if all of Phil’s coaches weren’t coming back and Mike Brown brings in his own crew. Let’s see what Brown can do but don’t waste our time trying to figure it out along the way.
