Kyrie Irving: I’m Not LeBron James

The Cleveland Cavaliers will likely try and sell their rookie as the team’s new savior, but Kyrie Irving is smart enough to put any comparisons to the town’s old hoops hero to bed. From the AP: “The Timberwolves continued their unbelievable lottery losing streak, falling to 0 for 14 and dropping for the eighth time. They had a 25 percent chance of winning after finishing with a league-worst 17-65 record. Instead, the luck went to the Cavs, who are used to playing deep in the playoffs and hope they won’t have to worry about this trip again. Besides Nick Gilbert, the Cavs also brought along current Cleveland Browns players Josh Cribbs and Joe Haden, dressed in the Cavs’ wine and gold jerseys, and former Browns star Bernie Kosar for good luck. They will likely decide between point guard Kyrie Irving of Duke or Arizona forward Derrick Williams as the top pick. ‘I don’t think you can make comparisons to me and LeBron,’ said Irving, who attended the lottery. ‘One, I’m not 6-8. Two, I’m not a high flyer and three, my name isn’t LeBron James. Honestly, you can’t make those comparisons yet. I think I would bring a different feel to the Cleveland organization if they do decide to take me.’”

Derrick Williams: I’ll be the next LeBron James for the Cavs

  • snasty10

no sh** lol, but he will be a good player no doubt about that, he abused my spartans this year when we played duke

    Nobody said u were

  • EtheKnickfan

Son, we know that. Kahn get this kid to make his decision then make Williams #1

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 Dfrance21

Forget this kid. Take Williams #1 and then snatch up Walker or Knight at #4.

  • toinefan88

Will someone please explain to me why this kid will be the #1 pick and KEMBA WALKER is not even being talked about?

i would love to to go the cavs and be the face of the city…. why not

I found this quote from Yahoo particularly awkward…
For parts of Irving’s freshman season at Duke, rival agents believed LeBron’s camp would sign him. “They came very hard for Kyrie,” says an ex-Duke basketball player who spent time on campus this season. “… All over him.”

  • Mike From Spain

    No sh*t, huh?

  • Joblo

@ toinefan88, the main reason is becuz irving is looked at as more of a natural point gaurd while kemba plays more like a two gaurd. I personally would go with the better player which right now is kemba but the only downside to him is that he’s only 6’1″

    and hes not a BEAST…..

But they’re still the Cavs though, right?

These comments from Kyrie, serve a couple purposes. None of which are negative. Looks like he has been coached up very well on the interview side unlike Lebron, whose good for the occasional, “did he really just say that,” every now and then. One, like him or not Lebron is an otherworldly talent. So openly comparing yourself to him and his immediate impact on a team and league wouldn’t be the smartest. But secondly, the first part of the comment, “I am not Lebron James,” will make Gilbert and the fan base in Cleveland that still hold some vitriol towards Lebron, very happy. In fact knowing Gilbert and his recent past, if they do take Irving… I wouldn’t be surprised if that soundbite is broadcasted in some fashion.

Im trying 2 remember when’s the last time the Cavs had the #1 pick. Hmmm. Oh, yeah. Haha! Right. It all comes full circle now. B4 Lebrons arrival 2 Cleveland, they had the #1 pick. Lebron ditches them and they r, once again, the team w/the #1 pick. Its hilarious.

Irving is right. He’ll only stay for his rookie contract with the Cavs instead of signing an extension.

DWill can be the next LeBron.. A better one at that. Quote me on that.

  • r2j

Irving is happy he’s going to Cleveland. The bigger question is who will the Cavs pick in pick number 4?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

It’s crazy to think that when Derrick Rose was drafted in ’08, a point guard going first overall was a huge deal.
Now Irving will probably be the third PG in four years to go first overall.

In other news, the sky is blue, shaq is injured and Eddy Curry is fat.

  • Yesse

Never said you were. I don’t think he would be like him anyway. You never know when a drafted player can be a bust anyway.

Lebron is the best player in the league right now. Kyrie is just managing expectations and trying to “underpromise and overdeliver.” Smart move on his part.

Well hej, I’m not Lebron either…..

  • miami6mvp

Who said u were? lmao not even close kid. Sad to see this cavs season but at least they got a good pick out of it. HEAT! 2011 Champs

  • jose

Well at least he’s being real with Cleveland fans, last thing you need is to feed their fantasy that Irving is like a second coming. .lol . . i wonder how enthusiastic everyone is on possibly going to cleveland?. . .

He says he’s not 6’8, not a high flier and his name is not LeBron James, but until we have the combine and we can see measurement, and leaping ability i’m not sure he’s not 6’8 and a high flier. As for his name not being LeBron James, i’d like to see his id and birth certificate to make sure…
