LeBron James Willing to Guard Derrick Rose in Game 2

Going small in the series opener cost Miami dearly against the Bulls, so they may look to change things up in Game 2. LeBron, for one, is prepared to take on the challenge of trying to slow down DRose and also running the Heat offense. From the Chicago Tribune: “In the wake of Sunday night’s 103-82 Chicago Bulls victory over the Miami Heat, LeBron James says he is willing to make whatever adjustments necessary to get his team even in the Eastern Conference finals Wednesday night at the United Center. ‘It doesn’t matter. I have guarded five positions this year and the postseason. Whatever it takes for our team to win,’ James said Monday before his team’s practice. ‘If that means guarding (Derrick) Rose from the start or playing more point guard, I’m up for the task.’”

In a pick and roll league, where that particular set is run sometimes multiple times a possession, who you’re initially guarding doesn’t matter all that much. The Bulls will just run a screen with say, Bibby’s man, and the Heat will switch and Rose will get the match up he wants. Admirable move by LeBron, but the success of both teams’ D will depend upon proper help defense and getting back in transition. Just my two cents.

  • RobbieJay

    i like Joe’s two cents

  • dsleepy

no disrespect, but when lebron tried to guard d.rose last year in the playoffs, rose put him on skates every time down the floor and got into the paint at will. lebron may be a good help defender, but 1on1 vs rose he will get punished.

Cosign Joe. Also, gotta notice that undertone of arrogance with Bron. What I heard from his statement is, “I can do a much better job guarding Rose than Dwyane can. If you want to win, let me check their best player.” Let’s see if he can follow through.

  • Yesse

I had a feeling it would come to this.

  • MattM

I know when I played hoops if someone was lighting up our team I wanted to be on him. If someone was going to put it on us I wanted it to go through me. I don’t know maybe just a pride thing. I don’t think there is anything wrong with wanting to do whatever it takes for your team to win.

  • shinique

Lebron is a good player who I respect so I want be hard on him, but Derrick Rose is to fast for him to guard and that shouldn’t even be his concern. He should be worried about how to get around Luol Deng and help his team with some scoring cause we all know they need it.

  • John

I thought he signed with the heat along with wade and Bosh because in Cleavland he couldn’t do it all by himself. Now he is saying he has to do it all by himself again. Actually I agree with dsleepy that LeBron guarding D-Rose is an advantage to the Bulls. Best of luck to him, though.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    bibby, wade, bron, don’t matter.
    and who’s guarding deng?

  • Big Rose

Lebron swears like he’s a lockdown defender who can guard anybody on the court. dsleepy is right, D Rose was too quick for Lebron last year. So unless D Rose twist both his ankles theres no way Lebron is staying in front of him. Def looking foward to seeing him get crossed up a few times on national television. :D

Bron Bron can cover Rose. If they will experiment with this, they better do this in game 2. The move makes a lot of sense. You neutralize rose, you neutralize the bulls.

  • Oh Nose

I feel like I just read the same thing Caboose.

  • estoniandude

didnt he want to cover Rondo last year. And i think he did, and look what happened last year. Go ahead Lebron do as you wish, i would choose Wade to guard Rose any day.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZKZ-KmR5Qw Max

Yeah, not gonna work out, it’s just gonna be like Rondo..

  • frogan96

rose is so quick lebron is not gana have any affect on him. he will get his ankles broken every time

  • Sean

Right…and who exactly does he propose will guard Luol Deng. This fool is just looking for more attention. Anyway, what Joe said makes sense aswell…i’m not sure it matters anyway – the Bull’s frontcourt and depth looks like it’s too much for Miami. Including all games this season the Bulls are 4-0 against Miami…nothing makes me think Miami are gonna bring that number too far back in their favour right now!

  • Bye bye

Deng is a stand still shooter and rose didn’t kill Labron what u talkin bout @airs bron was dunkin on that whole team an he kept rose out the lane rose made about 10 floaters

  • http://www.docksquadsports.com Vik

Why do Wade and Lebron have to give themselves props in every comment they make?

Lebron – It doesn’t matter. I have guarded five positions this year and the postseason

What clowns. Glad we have a humble hero in DROSE instead here in the CHI!

BULLS ABOUT TO SMOKE THESE CATS FOO!

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

@byebye – Deng is a stand still shooter? One of the biggeest slashers in the league is a stand still shooter in your mind? Its cool to give your opinion, but at least know what you’re talking about first.

  • kudos

James said last year he would guard Rose if, “He had too.” What happened?? He guarded him about twice the whole game. He’s just talking some bull. I will however say that if the Ref’s keep calling foul’s on whoever touches lebron and wade, the bulls will have a hard time getting this game. If you look at the percentages, the Heat had it better because they’re constantly on the foul line. Ref’s need to stop favoring these ’3 stars’ because without those B.S. calls, the Bull’s woulda been over 20 before the half.

  • http://bulls.com airs

@byebye – im not sure what you’re referring to in regards to my post.
but no, bron wasn’t dunking on the whole team.
didn’t he have like 2 breakaway dunks? maybe 1, last game.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

JoeMama is right. You’re not going to shut him down. Play team defense. And why would Bron to playing PG help with beating the Bulls? Listen to what JoeMama said.

  • slamfan4life

Bron is a beast, but idk if any one man can stop Rose

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZKZ-KmR5Qw Max

Deng is a standstill shooter is a joke, haven’t you seen like 100 times a play where DRose dibbeles a hands it off to Deng who goes straight to the rim?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think the real problem is everyone assuming anybody can stop Derrick Rose. The goal is not to stop him, that’s impossible. The goal is to make him inefficient. And LeBron would effectively take away all those easy jumpers after the defense is broken down. D Rose will have to be tony parker essentially

  • http://bulls.com airs

another big problem is that its not about one on one defense, the heat need a better team defense overall.
you won’t stop rose, but you can slow him down if you focus on him.
but if deng, boozer, and the bench can play up to their standards, it’d be futile anyway.

  • vtrobot

bye bye confused Luol Deng with Kyle Korver. easy mistake, they look a lot alike.

  • http://www.gil1906.com Pve84

What’s funny is that the Heat played great team defense on Rose in the first half of Game 1–Rose was a jump shooter the entire half. Unfortunately for the Heat, he was making enough of those jump shots and the rest of the team stepped up.

  • robb

    LAbron’s gonna get embarrassed

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Byebye has proven that he knows nothing about the Bulls.
    Dude thought their bench sucked.
    Lol.
Deng WAS a stand still shooter – in Vinny Del Negro’s offense.
*Side note* – Vinny Del Negro didn’t know what the hell he was doing!
Rose is indeed too fast for James, but James’ size does seem to bother Rose a little.
Eh, whatever. I expect a ton of adjustments from the Heat in game 2. Should be interesting.

  • kristin

His Arrogance, LBJ, was only threatened that is why he said those. He thought that they could easily nailed down the Bulls team. Sorry for LBJ coz the Bulls team really stepped up and played hard… Just look at their defense, no Heat player can easily penetrate the zone… Well, I just keep on hoping that the Bulls will keep the fire burning in quest for their hunger to win the eastern playoffs and eventually play for the finals…

  • JL

come on guys, derrick rose can be stopped, just probably not consistently. do you think lebron and wade are going to continue scoring 15 and 18 points each game? i’m not saying the heat are going to win the next game but it probably will not be a 21pt blowout. and I am rooting for the bulls, but just gotta be realistic.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Rose can be contained.
    He cannot be stopped.
Rose being stopped would mean no point and no assists. Not happening.

Where did all these bulls fans come from?
I remember in the beginning of the season it was only Rigo, BC, and Diesel, now it seems like there’s thousands of bulls fans sprouting up every day. Ever driven a “front-runner”?

  • http://bulls.com airs

nah, i been here since ’08 JT. maybe you just forgot.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Google “Fan’s view: Zebras hand Bulls victory over Miami Heat” for some real comedy.
Glad dude’s just a fan and not an actual reporter…

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Also, Dwyane Wade tweeted this: “I was playing my oldest son Zaire on his nerf rim & he dunked & said Gibson while screaming”
    LOL!
Wade’s a good dude and excellent father off the court, always has been.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    ^ ROFL that’s awesome!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Who will guard Deng if LeBron guards Rose? Wade?

  • DS44

Bron will need extra ankle tape for game two!

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

@JTaylor21, it’s better they stay quiet when they should. You rather have this board flooded with fans of the T-Wolves, Wizards, Kings, etc?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

JTaylor considers anyone who isn’t a huge fan ot the Heat a “Bulls fan” right now. About two weeks ago, those same people were “Celtics fans” and about a month ago they were “Philly fans.”

  • BostonBaller

I say let LBJ defend Rose and if the refs let him be super aggressive then he can stay out of foul trouble and be somewhat effective.

  • balher

Hey even if he does cover Rose well tomorrow creating missed shots his team still need to learn how to BOX THE HECK OUT!

  • lebron fan.

Derrick rose guarding lebron is like trying to stop a runaway freight train if Noah gets into foul trouble its over so before we say James can’t guard lebron its a 2 way street lol

  • Keith B McGlothin

If he had taken the lead, and attempted too slow Rondo last year, maybe the Cav’s would have had a better fate. Clearly Cav’s had no answer for Rondo. As the MVP, all defensive team member, best player on planet, leader of team, etc Rondo was an assignment he should have demanded, not accepted.

He didn’t fair well vs Rose at all, isn’t that the series in which elbow gate surfaced. I say James shoots 20+ tonight, they won’t win with he and Wade shooting over 20 FGA. Bosh will be taken away tonight.

Who really cares what James has too say? Why weren’t he and Wade not at post game press conference? Getting your ass kicked by 21, is no reason not to show up. I’m gonna go out on a limb, and say they would have showed up, had the won.

Picked Chicago in 6, Dallas was impressive last night, Durant was up for the challenge. Westbrook needs to be more efficient, for OKC to have a chance.
