Michael Jordan Surprises Oprah at Farewell Finale

Two of Chicago’s finest shared the stage Tuesday night when MJ made an appearance during Oprah Winfrey’s final talk show taping at the United Center. From the Associated Press: “Actor Will Smith introduced Jordan, describing the United Center as the ‘house that Michael Jordan built.’ Jordan came on stage and hugged Winfrey to loud cheers. Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships during the 1990s. Winfrey yelled to the crowd, ‘M.J. is in the house!’ The basketball legend told Winfrey she has meant a lot to him and inspired him. He wished her the best and told her he loves her.”

Oprah then gave a speech where she criticised all other talk show hosts; “Dr Phil is nothing compared to me!!”

Seriously though, who are we to tell someone what they should or shouldn’t do with the money that they earn? The government tries hard enough to do that to everyone.

what you want MJ to say? don’t buy my sneakers? people don’t NEED them anyways.
they can do what they want with their money.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Would you like people telling you what you should or shouldn’t do with your money? The fact is that many people like you demand that the wealthy give more, yet wouldn’t tolerate someone telling you what to do with your money. I think it would be great for the wealthy to help more than they do, but in know way do I think that they are required to just because they had more success than others. If they do help more, awesome, good for them…if they don’t give a single penny to anyone, so what, it’s thiers, they’ve earned it and they have that right.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ AD – my 11:15 comment was a stupid shot at you, shouldn’t have posted that…my apologies.

  • bigslim31

@A.D. – Instead of asking them to do something for the black community, why don’t YOU do something for the black community and educate yourself. They don’t owe you sorry @$$ nothing.

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Wayno is right.. All I have to say is that there ARE poor white people, poor asian people, etc. Times are tough for everyone, why do so many people think its only the black community that needs help?

  • AD

i didnt say that only black people nned help…Boss terry u rigt a lot of ppl need help ..ppl of all races.. im just sayn as so called Black leaders who are billionares …your supposed to help the lest fortunate and as far im concered… Your all might wannabe god don’t do none of it … Whats wrong wit helpn ppl who are strung out on drugs…. Arent we supposed to help one another…( i guess not) We will instead buy 100$+ jordans and not give to the needy like we should, watch someones last show and then walk pass an homeless person…… My point is …. Mr Jefferey Jordan doesent do enough for anybody… especillay for his own….. Ya take my words out of context when i say help out… idnt mean everybody… i mean homeless ppl who lost their home,, help ppl get off drugs….. innocent kids in jail for mariujuana posse…. stuff like that

.Butt i guees thats too much for a billionare right?

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

If I was rich, I would donate to Brian Grant’s charity in his fight against Parkinsons. I met him just a few months ago at a restaurant next to the Rose Garden, and it was very sad to see one of my favorite players as a teenager, standing there with his hands deep in his pockets, twitching like crazy..

Oprah leads by example. The harder she balls, the more I better myself.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

All governments should have the responsibility to provide a basic social safety net. Nobody is saying that rich people shouldn’t be rich. Nobody is saying that you shouldn’t do what you want with your money.
And just because someone is poor doesn’t mean he/she doesn’t work hard. People work backbreaking jobs and make minimum wage in the US–do you really think anyone can support a family on minimum wage? And at least the US HAS minimum wage.
To people living in the United States, a country that wastes $663.8 BILLION on arms and military spending, don’t you think that that money (YOUR money, to be exact) could be better spent on, you know, things like better schools? Healthcare?
I mean, sh!t, there was a statistic done by the UN that said something like 6% of what the US spends on its military could END WORLD HUNGER.

  • AD

@teddy bear exactly……. Oprah&MJ have money to contribute in America to end World hunger…. BUT WE WANT DA COOL GREY’S INSTEAD

  • BostonBaller

@TeddyB just told the truth. Even more so think about all the money we ship over to other countries while homelessness and hunger are all around the US. How many billions are we giving Pakistan annually AND for what? What MJ does with his money is his business and who among us really knows what he gives and to whom? Some people are great at giving and keeping it on the down low and some give a lot and EVERYONE knows about it. Oprah is on the airwaves daily and has her own network so there is no way that her givings will be kept secret. Their $$ their business.

  • BostonBaller

Just because we don’t make millions doesn’t mean we can’t give back just as much. Volunteering in youth centers and schools, coaching a local team or organizing outings for the neighborhood kids. There are dozens of ways each of us can make a greater impact on “our” people than an Oprah or MJ can b/c we live in the neighborhoods. We all need to put our money, time & talents where our mouths are. I’m just say’n.

  • mannyec0409

I’m starting to notice that MJ is kind of a D-bag…but he is still one of my favorite athletes. Oprah has done many good things for a lot of different people so she deserved whatever she has.

  • Tyrant56

^after being crowned as the best at what he did and a self named brand humility shouldn’t be his best quality.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Sure, Teddy, f*ck the US military, right?
Let’s go fight Al Qaeda with spears, swords and sheilds, Sparta style!
On the outside looking in, it looks like the government hooks us up with some NICE weapons, armor and humvees.
And maybe for the other services they do, but I know when I was in the Marines, everything we had was sh*tty and my boys that went overseas were dying left and right cause there was no armor on our f*cking humvees!
But it’s all a waste, anyways, so whatever…

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I’m sorry, I get a little heated when people try to imply that the US is wasting money on the military.
I get what you’re trying to say, Teddy. There are certain aspects of the defense budget that causes even me to question “WTF do we need that for?”
    No beef here.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

^ Yeah no worries Rigo, I’m not trivializing what marines do. What I AM saying is that the US doesn’t need to spend as much on its military every other country in the world combined.
There has to be a shift in US foreign policy for any of this to happen. That is… make less enemies, or, fund less enemies (with respect to Saddam, Al Qaeda, etc.).
When the United States is the only industrialized Western country to not have universal access to healthcare, that’s a problem. A problem that probably could have been solved if the US cut defense spending.
I mean, we’re not even talking a significant percentage here. Roughly 5-10% would end world hunger… That’s insane to think about.
The UN estimates that about $29 billion could end world hunger–that is, grow crops in areas that are hit with food shortages, fund irrigation projects in Africa, etc. That’s nothing compared to how much the military costs taxpayers.
And even with a decrease in 5-10% the US would still lead the world in military spending by a sh!t load.
It might sound idealistic, but it’s clearly possible.

We cool though, Rigo. I’m definitely not saying that you or your military buddies should be carrying out your duties Sparta-style, lol. Hope you didn’t take offense.
