Post Up: Advantage, Bulls

DRose and friends earn a 3-2 series lead.

Chicago 95, Atlanta 83

In a seven-game NBA Playoff series, the winner of Game 5 takes the series 83 percent of the time. That stat tells you exactly how much was on the line for both the Atlanta Hawks and the Chicago Bulls last night in the United Center. Win this game and the Eastern Conference Finals await. Lose and you might as well start planning your summer vacation.

Luckily for the fans of both franchises and for basketball fans in general, each team gave a brilliant effort and it was the kind of game that had just the right amount of quality basketball mixed with energy and passion that makes for an exciting contest. It was also the kind of game that the Playoffs are all about.

Chicago came out and looked as if they were trying to put the game out of reach early as they lead by as many as 15 points at one point and finished the first quarter up 11 on Atlanta. But the Hawks battled back in the 2nd quarter and showed that they weren’t going anywhere as they outscored Chicago 21-16 and found themselves down just 6 points by halftime.

In the third quarter, the Hawks outscored Chicago once again and briefly took the lead for the first time in the game on the continued brilliance of Jeff Teague (21 points, 7 assists, 0 turnovers, 8-11 shooting) who seemed to put the team on his back. The quarter was also highlighted by some chippiness between Carlos Boozer (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Josh Smith (16 points, 7 rebounds) in which both players were assessed double technical fouls on a Boozer elbow to the face (possible fine and/or suspension?) after a JSmoove dunk. Tom Thibodeau also used a more defensive oriented lineup that hasn’t been seen in this series (Rose, Gibson, Deng, Asik, Gibson). It seemed to throw the rhythm of Atlanta off and give Chicago momentum heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter, it was the Derrick Rose (33 points, 9 assists, 2 turnovers) and Taj Gibson show. Both players accounted for 11 points apiece, with all of Gibson’s points coming in the final quarter. Chicago outscored the Hawks 26-15 in the final period to take a 3-2 lead going back to Atlanta on Thursday where they’ll look to close the Hawks out and advance to the ECF for the first time in 13 years. —Bryan Crawford (@_BryanCrawford)

I didn’t even know if the refs saw it, and you know the rule in the NBA, its always the retaliator that gets caught. And I thought Smith’s reaction was almost mild, i half expected him to swing immediately.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I’m obviously pulling for the Bulls, but if I put my “realist” cap on, I have to say it’s looking like it might be an ’06 Finals remix, with probably the same result as last time.

  • Scott

Tractor Traylor dead at 34. R.I.P.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I like Miami and Dallas to make the finals. And I won’t make a serious prediction on that series until I see how Miami handles the Dirk and Shooters band. I would preemptively take Miami just in observation of my “the best players usually win in the playoffs” rule.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Going to the Finals the last 4 years I would say is pretty relevant, i think you’d agree RiNig. At least i’d say i’m the Bono of NBA fans. Still have most my hair. Can dance a little. Can rock shades like no other. Yeah i’ll take it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

your “relevance” is gone, the team that made it to the finals for 4 years is dead, and about to be dismembered. LA ain’t makin a trip to the finals until Superman wears a Lakers jersey.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

which is next year…. so…. see ya then haha. Who u reppin NBK? Suns right?… No joke needed.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

nobody, i rep good basketball and logical thinking. but yes i’m from phoenix

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Ha, I actually meant you as a commenter. Not the Lakers themselves.
Come to think of it, most of the Laker fans on here are gone now. Seems like more than any other fanbase, Laker fans only wanna talk about their own team and no one else.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

LakeShow is mis cleo, you can tell by how he/she “knows” Dwight will be a Laker next year. Just like he knew the Sonics last season in Seattle was 2008. Infact you haven’t even been a laker fan for 4 years, how can you claim your relevance is connected? for all we know you’ll be the heatshow next year.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

When the Bulls win and Derrick Rose plays well, both TPU and Twitter is slander free. But when they lose, oh boy…

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Haven’t you heard?
Dwight is going to Chicago for Taj Gibson and Carlos Boozer this summer.
At least, that is what some clueless Bleacher Report writer wrote about this morning…
    Sigh…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

LakeShow is awesome! and has allot of relevance!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haha had to do it since Slam invited me to. Lakers have been my second favorite team my whole life so nope. You really want to discuss fandom with me? He who has no team lol. Fo real kid. I am a little bored now that the Lakers are gone. I’m half rooting for the Thunder seeing as how I am one of a few that own a vintage Durant Sonics jersey! hells yes

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Blasphemy!
You can’t root for the Thunder!
You’re supposed to be sticking needles in your Clay Bennet voodoo doll!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

half rooting you heard me lol. Rooting for players not teams. Shout out to Nick Collison!

  • A.

@LakeShow: Finals the last 4 years? 08, 09, 10. I count three years. Maybe I’m forgetting something. Aaaannnnddd Laker fans can drop the “they get the benefit of the doubt because they’re the champs” bit. They’re no longer relevant.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Sooper, maybe he’ll start following the Hornets and become the HorShow!
    Just clownin’, Lake.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

MJ isn’t relevant no more. Doesn’t mean he ain’t OG as f*ck. I’ll take OG as f*ck also. Really we can drop that now? thank you! nexxxxxt!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Keep clowning with your online GF RiNig ;) I don’t know whats better, first year of relevance or last of 4 years of relevance.

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

I’m curious guys..does anyone think the bulls can beat the heat?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

you know I actually can’t consider myself a fan of any team. I just like whose got the biggest bandwagon.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    cute^

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I actually have never even been to a Laker game.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Cute again Timmy^ i remember wayyyy back in the day when you said you like good basketball discussions.. those were the days.. or minutes…

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Show’s over, atleast for the Lakers, and Phil, and my useless opinion.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Datkid, in my opinion, we honestly can’t know until they play each other, if they do.
The Bulls have struggled against their first two opponents in the playoffs, but their pride kicks in and they ALWAYS stand up against the elite teams.
Since January, they were 10-0 against teams that ended up winning 50 or more games on the season, and were 3-0 against Miami.
Which means precisely not a damn thing in the playoffs, but it does kind of prove that the Bulls play their best when facing the best.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Lakeshow’s like that dude looking at himself in the mirror: “I’m not crazy, you’re crazy! I’m not crazy, you’re crazy! I’m not crazy…”

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lakeshow is a person who gets upset when people do exactly what he just did. – and i do like basketball discussions, the problem? you have in no way shape or form attempted to have a basketball discussion today. Your hear being you, which is annoying and useless. so i’m going to let you know. and if it means using your own tactics ima do that.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I’m upset? Wheres the basketball convo? you’ve just been mocking me for the last 30 mins. Do what you preach and teach little guy. Don’t stoop to my level ya dork. If i was a straight up f*cking creeper like you i would save peoples names and emails. Shouldn’t you be teaching someone to shoot or something. Damn all this talk of “I don’t have time, waaah waaah wahhh” and your a friggin internet geek with no life… No offense doody ;) Don’t be hurt by what i’ve said please Timmy it’s not meant to hurt only to help you up! I’m crazy! i’m not crazy! Am I crazy? I’m f*cking craaaaazay! Did you really hear that Dwight to CHI-town RiNig?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

actually your name and e-mail keeps popping up. over and over again, just like mine did for you when you posted as me. I’m getting paid to write this comment, how bout you? internet dork lol, IM GETTING PAID HOE

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh and your obviously upset, if you weren’t why you using my real name? i thought you weren’t a creeper that remembered stuff like that? infact making it public for everyone (i don’t really care but still) once again shows your ignorant hypocrisy. you wanna talk basketball? bring up something about it, don’t go on about the irrelevant lakers and how your relevant cuz you jumped on their bandwagon. shouldn’t you be looking for a new team anyway? you see that, see how someone can point out something useless to try and sound smarter? its what you do, its your arguing tactic, like your coaching shooting comment, or your little “have no life” comment. You don’t know me, no need for you to try and peak into my personal life. unless your the “creeper” you are worried I am.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I’m getting paid to write this comment also probably a bit more than you also but lets not out piss eachother. and i’m not here every day all day cause theres this thing called the great out doors where you can play REAL basketball. Check it out. Take a breather from your computer fan. Slut.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

hahaha you have literally no idea what your talking about.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Hipocrissy is ripe throughout this conversation. NBK: “Why don’t you talk good basketball and not call people names, Hoe!” lol. Read what you write holmes.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I said I’M GETTIN PAID HOE. its like I JUST WON THE LOTTERy B*TCHES. — I comment on this site because I am working, and can because I have time, talk about basketball all day, because its what I like to do. Most people would love to have the opportunity to do what they love while they work, others would ignorantly come to a different conclusion. you can figure out which one you are.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I never bandwaggoned a team in my life. Not ever. Not once. Only been a fan of my home team my entire life. I ain’t lookin for a new team. Ride/Die Lakers for life! Unless the Sonics come back then i’d have to switch back haha

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

“I never bandwaggoned a team in my life. Not ever. Not once. Only been a fan of my home team my entire life” – oh so you live in LA? if not your being a hypocrit, again.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Its whatever dude but your classless and thats obvious your litterrally the one guy on here I can’t have a basketball convo with. It’s just insults and trash talk with you. “Good Bball talk!” “Good Bball talk!”

  • ThaWindy

Where are the Rose the haters today?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I live in LA you friggggin Dork! how many times do i have to say that! moved to LA 6 years ago!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I was checking. You haven’t said ONE basketball comment today. How do you want to have a basketball related conversation when you comment the way you do. read what you write, you see anywhere that is open for a basketball discussion? you calling the lakers relevant and guaranteeing they’d get dwight is the closest thing you’ve said today to a relevant basketball topic, but it isn’t relevant. Your out here trying to have a p*ss*ng match, and trying to play the victim at the same time.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I’m getting paid significantly less than both of y’all to comment .
    Ha!
Lake, I was forwarded a link to an article by a co-worker of mine.
How in the hell does this writer think that the Magic would take Gibson and Boozer in exchange for Howard? Damn!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh and i apologize for checking, i do remember the conversation now, which still made me feel like you just jumped on the bandwagon. but i don’t want to have that conversation again, your not goin to change my perception of you as a lakerfan.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Is it just me, or are there an unusually high number of pissing contests on this site these days?
I guess it’s spring and rutting season.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

RIP Robert “Tractor” Traylor; thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh and Lakeshow it was you that started with the insults and crap. I mean seriously how you come at me or talk about me dictates how I respond to you.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Lol you all crack me up! Yes i’m still a little bitter NBK, and i probably will be till the lakers go on a long winning run in several months. RiNig, That would be a wayyy bigger steal than Pau was from Memphis! Boozer litterally sucks these days. Sad to see. Allot of money for a bum (GIMME DAT MONEY!!). I like Taj allot but is he ever going to be starter material? isn’t he undersized at PF? And then what Noah and Howard starting lineup? i know you can’t have to much size but damn haha

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

the trade is never happening. matic pointed it out sarcastically, because it was a stupid thing for whoever wrote that, to write.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Word?
Taj is starter material right now. He was starter material in his rookie season, when he started 70-plus games and did a damn fine job.
Taj is the same size as Boozer, is already one of the best defenders at his position, and is a pretty good rebounder as well.
He averaged 10 points, 7 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per as a starter this year.
In games where he played 30 or more minutes this season, he averaged 11.9 ppg, 9.6 rpg and 2.3 bpg.
I’d say he’s pretty good starter material.
