Post Up: Coming Through

The Heat win in overtime, go up 3-1.

Miami 101, Chicago 93

The Chicago Bulls’ struggles—specifically Derrick Rose’s—in the 4th quarter of games continued for the third game in a row on Tuesday night. After battling Miami hard in the first three quarters, even holding a lead for a very long stretch, the Bulls could not overcome the stifling defense of the Heat in the final quarter and the contest had to be decided in OT.

Derrick Rose made a commitment to come out and be more aggressive after passive play in Games 2 and 3, and that’s exactly what he did. Just ask Joel Anthony. Rose had three big dunks: one on a fast break with LeBron James trailing, one with Mario Chalmers attempting to draw a foul and one huge one on Anthony who tried to stop Rose at the rim to no avail. The play of the League MVP seemed to inspire Chicago and they jumped out to an early lead on Miami that put their opponent on their heels.

But Miami, playing in front of a packed house at the American Airlines Arena, would not be denied.

Led by the play of LeBron James, who took the assignment of guarding Derrick Rose down the stretch—limiting him severely—and some questionable offensive isolation calls late in the game on the part of head coach Tom Thibodeau, the Heat once again imposed their will on the Bulls in the late moments of regulation and in overtime, shutting Chicago down with swarming defense and going to James on the offensive end. He continues to make big plays in these Playoffs by singlehandedly closing teams out in crucial moments.

Along with the stellar play of James, who had his first 30+ scoring outing in this series, Miami also got a huge lift from Mike Miller off the bench, as he gave a similar contribution to the one they got from Udonis Haslem in Game 2. Miller chipped in 12 huge points off the bench and also grabbed 9 rebounds; his scoring seemed to help Miami get off the ropes and gave them the momentum they needed to overcome Chicago who, at the very least, seemed to rectify their offensive struggles from the last two contests in this game.

Miami now goes up 3-1 in the series in a game where Dwyane Wade was mostly nonexistent and it seems to now be a matter of “when” and not “if” the Heat will close out the Bulls to win the Eastern Conference Finals and advance to the NBA Finals. The loss was a crushing blow to Chicago, similar to the one the Oklahoma City Thunder suffered at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks the night before. It wasn’t an easy victory by any means, and the Bulls did give it their best shot. It still wasn’t enough.

Miami will look to close the Bulls out in Game 5 Thursday night at the United Center.—Bryan Crawford (@_bryancrawford)

    Allen going in…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I’m stating fact. You didn’t address my claims. We’re discussing ball in this forum….not on Facebook. Here, you haven’t been “quite happy” about the way the Heat have played ball and it was just a couple of days ago that I commented to you after you said the Heat can still falter as if you expected it to happen due to their past performances or whatever the words were that were used and I said keep waiting. So….keep waiting. Nothing’s changed, son.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

And, Wade’s ball handling has always been overrated.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

i was kinda confused by your comment nbk, haha.
maybe your ‘s are mixed im not sure

    Eboy going back in…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Dwyane Wade’s 2nd option last season in a series against the Boston Celtics was Michael Beasley. Let’s not f*ck around and try to rewrite history like he played it with a still relevant Shaq.

    i mean ‘s

    damn it never mind haha

Philo…I’m not mad at Allen, I just want to clarify his stance as the Heat inch closer to the Finals so that when he flip flops and start’s rooting for Dirk, I’ll know where it’s coming from.:)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

airs i am confused by your confusion lol

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

@balladjlfj: Thats not really fair to say just look at the free throws they take therefore the refs are biased. That happens because Lebron’s offense is run and jump at the rim w/o thinking and many times a foul call results.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Well gentlemen my horses are all officially out of the race…

  • tRay

    I got you airs lol

  • J-MAC

It seems like nit picking DWades ball handling skills is really a lame topic. Dude is still a top 5 player in the league. Is his handles caused his team to loose games or has it had a negative impact on the Heats success…NO.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Let me get a crack at it, Eboy;
Allenp is down with The King.
    Period.
If he isn’t, then he should be. lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

where’s JTaylor, if your here, do you understand why Mike Miller plays over James Jones yet?

  • http://slamonline.com Saviour

Dallas will beat whoever stumbles through this awful series, more all-around weapons, better D – Miami are showing signs of what they can become but not this year. I’d bet the house on it.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I’m convinced… Heat “Stans” are the worst group of people ON EARTH. SMDH…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

What exactly and I supposed to do, parade in the street because the Heat are playing like they should have been playing all year?
What twist in the wind opinions? I said on here that I thought the Heat would win in six, but I wasn’t certain because I liked the Bulls advantage on the glass and their elite defense.
I also questioned whether Wade and Bron would be focused the entire series against a team they could easily see as inferior.
After Game 1, I said the Heat needed to dominate their individual matchups, and while the rebounding edge was an issue, they got subpar games from Bron and Wade which I didn’t expect to happen again.
After Game Three I said that the Heat looked good but the series was only 2-1. Which was true. The Bulls had several opportunities to win the game last night, and were two Derrick Rose jumpers away from winning. I mean, if he hits those shots, particularly the first one going left that rimmed out, this is an entirely different conversation, right?
And wouldn’t the blame for the loss have to go to Wade who failed to show up for most of the night and hurt the team with stupid turnovers and sloppy play?
I don’t root for a team like you do. I root for good basketball. I actually was sad Chicago lost because of how hard they fought last night and because their loss means this series could be over in five instead of being stretched out. I watch the games for the ball, that’s it.

  • jgrey7

Totally not understanding these Bosh over STAT comments. STAT is waaaaaay better than Bosh and Miami would have been even more formidable with STAT.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

hahahah “the worst group of people ON EARTH.”
a bit much, but i love the commitment haha

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

right bet against the best 2 players on earth, who just knocked off 2 “better” (according to a lot of people) teams. The Dallas Miami series better go 6 or 7 that’s as far as my serious prediction would go. Betting against Miami doesn’t seem intelligent though

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

STat is not better than Bosh. He had a better first 30 games. Nobody who watched ball before this year thought STAT was better.
As for rooting for Dirk, I’m torn.
I would like the see the big fella vanquish his demons. I would also like to see Miami prove much of the basketball viewing public wrong and get a ring in their first year. There are pros and cons to each outcome.
If Dirk wins, it’s a given that he leapfrogs Iverson in the “best career” discussion, which of course makes me sad. Plus, the Larry Bird comparisons will only come back, which I’ve always hated. However, dude has worked HARD. He’s improved, and gotten mentally stronger every year. I respect the hell out of him for that, and I love how he created his own template.
With Miami, it would be good to see all the people who said that the construction of their team was a basketball atrocity be proven wrong. It would be good to put to rest the debate about whether Bron can win a ring, and whether Bosh can play. However, it could lead to them regressing as far as effort and commitment next year forcing me to deal with another season of watching the two best players in the world fail to live up their immense potential at both ends of the floor.
Either way there are advantages and disadvantages.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

nbk you are backwards. lol @airs trying to say that like 10 times.

  • jgrey7

Allenp please tell me what Bosh does so much better than STAT. STAT goes to the basket better, they are a wash defensively, and Bosh just decided to show up this series, are your really saying with a straight face that Bosh is better than STAT?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

oh haha thanks Nic, my bad, y’all understood though lol

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

holy sh#t they don’t show up lol Chi>Indiani is what you meant. Dallas>OKC and LA. Ugh this was not worth it.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t understand the “can LeBron win a ring” or any skepticism at all about Miami being good enough to win a title. Its just a matter of time before they get 1 or more, I think that is pretty obvious.

  • JTaylor21

AllenP is on point. I’ve seen this all year, Wade has a tendency to force the issue when things aren’t going his way. For a 6-4 SG, the guy has terrible handles, he seems to always lose the ball on the break or when slashing off a curl. I remember the DWade in the 08 olympics and 08 season that dominated every defender checking him and he had a case that season to be the best in the L but these playoffs have been different especially in the CF. I know Bogans is a good defender but there’s no reason Wade should be struggling so badly against him and looking gassed when Bron is going 45+ mins strong vs one of the best perimeter defenders in the L while checking Rose down the stretch.
Wade needs to get his shooting touch back because they are going to need his scoring if they make it to the finals.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

JGrey – They are not a wash defensive, just look at the career games that were put up against Amar’e this season. (hint: Klove, Nazr Mohammad, Blake Griffin, Tyler Hansbrough (twice)). And the check their stats as the best player on their respective teams, its pretty clear from there. Amar’e is probably a better scorer, barely. ANd that’s it.

  • T-Money

btw, was that a dig at rose when bron referred to him as the mvp in his post game interview with sager?

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I wondered the same thing, but decided it wasn’t

  • tRay

I cosign Allenp on the Bosh better than STAT argument. It’s not by a wide margin but he is and he didn’t just decide to show up this series he’s been pretty damn good.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    THANK you nic hahah

  • http://www.slamonline.com Cheryl

    Heat in 5.

  • JTaylor21

NBK, Que? When did I ever say that JJ should be out there instead of Mike “Meth” Miller?
I obviously stated that dude’s a better rebounder, playmaker and a slightly better defender (not elite). So are you going to state facts or stick to make ish up?

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    Hi, Cheryl.

  • T-Money

bosh is so much better than stat defensively, it’s not even funny. the next time stat shows hard on a pick n roll to not let the dribbler turn the corner AND sprint in the key to recover to one of the bigs will be the first… in his entire career. and bosh has had a down year rebounding the ball but he’s been better than stat on that front too. miami would be worse with stat. more exciting but nowhere near as good on the defensive end. and i’m not totally convinced that stat would have accepted to be the 3rd option.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

whoops my bad Taylor, I meant that at T-Money. You just got in that conversation about Miller defensively, saying James Jones is a slightly better shooter, I mistook what you said as implying that you thought Jones should get minutes over Miller. (from TPU 2 days ago).

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

As folks have already noted, Bosh is a better defender and rebounder.
It’s a large margin on defense and smaller one as for rebounding.
And while Amare is the best roller in the business, it’s not his scoring, overall, is on a totally different level. Remember, dude has played in a version of Mike D’s offense most of his career.
There is a reason Bosh was the third most coveted free agent this summer, something I, and T-Money, have noted all year. Sure, he’s struggled and looked soft at time, but those were aberrations, not the norm.

  • T-Money

nbk: guilty. not going to front, i had lost confidence in mike miller.

  • tRay

Random thought but I think the Bulls line up announcement song should be Red Nation by Game and Lil Wayne lol that song is too tough and it has that Zombie Nation sample to make it sound like an anthem.

  • JTaylor21

I have to agree with T-Money on one thing; Bron’s stamina is mind-boggling. The guy doesn’t seen to get tired and never seems to gassed or huffing and puffing no matter how many mins he plays. To be able to attack the rim consistently like he does, score 35 points, be a factor on the boards and play lockdown D on the fastest/quickest player in the L points to him being a well conditioned athlete.
That’s one thing people fail to mention about MJ; he’s supreme stamina. The guy was able to play the hardest out of anybody on both ends of the floor and yet still looked he hadn’t broken a sweat after the game. I remember that play vs the knicks when the MJ stole the inbound pass and was dribbling up court then had it stolen by the X man then MJ sprinted back and knocked it out of his hands. I mean that takes immense amounts of energy just to be able to complete that 10 second sequence and MJ did that his entire career.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

T – no stress man, I just wanted to see if you saw what I was trying to explain about miller. And my bad Taylor shouldn’t have called you out without being positive who I was talkin too.

  • HAMMER

Bulls weren’t even suppose 2 have made it this far. Heat doin what they were suppose 2 have been doin since jump street. Its beginning 2 look like a Mavs/Heat Finals. Again. Sigh. Talk bout a dull Finals. Ugh!

  • JTaylor21

    NBK, it’s all good, bruh.

  • showtime

this is not jab or anything cause your going @ my boi dwade. but are we so far removed from that lost & post confrence when Bron, Bron question Spo sub patterns saying 48 min was to long??

  • showtime

& bulls fan stop with that Bull’s wasn’t suppose to make it this far sh!t.When your the # 1 team in the nba,you gonna have the X on your back. Deal with it.Just like Okc once you start wining, that is what is expected. We all kno their no moral victories in ball.So stop with that…

  • JTaylor21

    Playoffs >>>> Regular Season

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It was because it was the first half of the season, no need to wear out your best player. They need him now more then they needed him then. Would 8 more minutes from LeBron a game have changed Miami’s playoff seeding? Because it really didn’t hurt it much once he started sitting more, they did finish with the 2 seed. — And I would like to say I mis-judged Spoelstra throughout this entire season. I thought he was an idiot for playing Joel Anthony so heavily (turns out he’s actually their most productive playoff center in terms of +/-), thought he was crazy for not pushing Mike Miller for heavier minutes in hopes of getting him acclimated for the playoffs, and also questioned his offensive system when they weren’t running enough Dwyane Wade and LeBron James tandem plays. Now the Heat run those when they need to, they are also running more sets that include all of the “sooper friends,” so props to Spoelstra for sticking to his guns, and Pat Riley for the same thing.
