Post Up: Don’t Look Down

LeBron James and the Miami Heat reach the NBA Finals.

Miami 83, Chicago 80

If it was surreal watching the final three minutes and change of Game 5 unfold from the comforts of your living room, imagine watching it in the company of 23,000+ people. The best way to describe what happened at the United Center last night it is the NBA talking all commercial, the one with Charlie Murphy doing the voiceover telling the story of Derek Fisher’s miraculous Playoff shot against the Spurs. It was the exact same thing.

All of the air went out of the building like, pffffffffffffffffffffff

The Bulls led the Heat by 12 points with just over three minutes to go in regulation when LeBron James, Dwyane Wade—who struggled all game—and Chris Bosh took over and stole what seemed to be a sure-fire trip back to Miami for Game 6.

While most Bulls fans will blame the loss on poor officiating (Miami took 9 FT’s in a two-minute span late in the final quarter), credit goes to the Heat for stepping it up on the defensive end, but more importantly, for making big shots in critical moments. Whether it was Bosh hitting a baseline jumper while being guarded by two defenders or making two huge, late FT’s; or Dwyane Wade driving to the lane and converting time and again or getting fouled by Derrick Rose to earn a 4-point play opportunity; or LeBron James once again hitting big shot after big shot, shaking the criticism that he isn’t a closer by once again proving that he clearly is. All of these things buried Chicago and helped Miami advance to the NBA Finals for the opportunity to face the Dallas Mavericks.

As disappointing as the loss was for all of Chicago, what stings is they way that they were defeated and who it came at the hands of. Still, the team had a season that no one expected them to have.

Derrick Rose will receive the bulk of the blame today for this loss and the Bulls’ failure in the postseason, but that comes with the territory of being an NBA superstar. But say what you want about him, it can’t be denied or argued that DRose and his stellar play this season are the real reason they even made it this far, and at 22-years-old, he’s the reason Bulls fans can feel confident that this isn’t the last time this team will be in this position. —Bryan Crawford (@_bryancrawford)

Big win for American Airlines last night. I can’t believe they sponsor two NBA Arenas.

  • mjNotkobe

Dirk is gonna feast on Bosh, but unfortunately it will be Heat in 6. Bulls-Heat outcome isn’t the least bit shocking to anyone who wasn’t delusional. Rose is a great young player but it was str8 crazy to think in a 7 game series he was good enough to lead a one-man show over DWade, LBJ, and Bosh. Dirk has a much better chance with his vets than Rose had w/ Noah and the dude whose bark is 10x his bite.

  • RobbieJay

@Eboy, i think miami needs to steal 2 games in dalls to get full control, although one win wouldnt be bad ethier. i hate the 2-3-2 finals format because you could protect homecourt, and then go down 3-2.

  • Myung

I’d like to see Caron suit up, even for one minute of game action. He was a big part of the Mavs early season success, and he had short run when he broke into the League with Miami. I’m sure it’s got to be extra painful to sit out the finals when he gets to go against his original NBA team. I feel bad for the dude.

Props to Lebron, He took over last night , best i’ve seen from him since his Detroit playoff performance a couple years ago…. D-Rose is one of my fav players but his turnovers and fouls late in game killed the Bulls..But you have to feel the bitter taste of defeat before you can experience the sweet taste of victory

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Tuffjuice must play, even if just as a symbolic gesture. I mean he’s been working out hard, but only if his knee can handle a few mins. Myung is so right.

  • logues

to the heat lovers: theres really nothing to brag about until if they win the chip (which they wont). the heat have the two best players in the league on their team, with another allstar player, all in their prime. no other team in the league has even close to that. so really, its no surprise and they should win

  • T-Money

I mean, everyone knows LeBron is my man but I’m having doubts. Dallas has Kidd, Marion, Dirk, Terry, Peja. All marquee players. I don’t know man, I’m just hoping Miami eek out somehow, and that’s a long shot.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Guys like logues make it all worthwhile.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    T-Money….root for the Mavs. Please.

  • bike

The NBA needs to change the way the MVP is selected. They need to wait until the playoffs are over to make the decision. How could anyone, anyone, argue that LeBron outplayed Rose and was far more valuable to his team than Rose in this series? Rose is going to be great, don’t get me wrong, but LeBron is a much better all around player.

  • http://www.bulls.com. Rigo Gonzalez

    Man, oh man.
It’s sad to say, but when the Bulls had that double digit lead in the fourth, I was nowhere near thinking it was going to game six.
Instead my mindset was “let’s see how they F it up this time.”
I gotta give a tremendous amount of credit to the Heat though. Players stepped up and made huge plays.
    And their defense?
As someone who enjoys watching great defense as much, if not more than, great offense, I gotta say Miami’s defense in this series was a thing of beauty.
But so was Chicago’s. They just couldn’t get it done offensively.
Now that Chicago’s out, I wouldn’t mind seeing either team, Dallas or Miami, win a title.
    But I’m picking the Heat.
Lots of people are saying if the Heat win this year, they’ll win the next 4 or 5.
I don’t believe that. The Thunder, my Bulls, and other teams will be right there every year.
    Hopefully.
Bulls had a great season, better than anyone expected. I can’t be mad that they made it this far and lost to a team that was built to win now.
@Eboy – appreciate the shout-out. Now that my team’s gone fishing I can turn off the hate and enjoy the Heat.

thats why there’s a finals MVP, bike.
slam won’t let me post my frustration so i’ll try again. ahem.

    ugh.

  • Mike From Spain

I thought this series was going to be Heat in 6, then had some doubts because of the big Bulls win in game 1, but after game 2 I could not see the Bulls winning. The Bulls need to get… I don’t know, someone who does something, not Boozer, he’s just dead weight. Also someone who is an offensive upgrade over Bogans, which is not saying much. With these two little tweaks, and with Rose being able to trust other scorers in his team, then the Bulls are good to go for another great season. As for the Heat, congrats, but I still hate the current roster :)

  • Mvp23100

T-money you must be in a humble mood Dirk wants no parts of this physical defense you hit him in the mouth a few times the rest will fall in line And they have absolutely no awnsers for our stars Kidd locking up Bron or Wade isn’t happening and Bosh will keep Dallas bigs busy if not get his money

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Guys who need to show up bigtime for Dallas:
Peja (two bad games against OKC)
Terry (his shot selection is atrocious, his end of qtr fouls are just stoooopid, his D is lacking)
Chandler (he needs to finish around the rim like he did vs Bynum)
Carlisle (please don’t waste Marion on chasing Bron around when you have Brewer glued to the Bench. He ignited your Game 1 comebsck against the Kobettes, damnit. Give the man some minutes)

  • mjNotkobe

MVP is a regular season award. If the playoffs were taken into consideration LBJ might not have one. Even this year I’d have given it to Dirk so far. He’s been the the most valuable and best player this post-season.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

As if this morning couldn’t be worse for bulls fans, scottie gotta go and say something like this-
Scottie Pippen: “Michael Jordan is probably the greatest scorer to ever play in the game, but I may go as far to say LeBron James is probably the greatest player to ever play the game”.

  • Tyrant56

LeBron’s killer Instinct is growing in an exponential rate and is on full display for the world to see, this is why basketball at its core is a team game, because you need more than 1 man to defend and score I wish both squads could win (mainly Bron & Dirk) but sumthins gotta give and well, its gon be a looooong series

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Wow, the “Dirk is soft crowd” sure hasn’t been paying attention this postseason especially.
    Hopeless.

  • T-Money

    10:25 wasn’t me. I ain’t humble for sh-t! MIAMI IN 5, B-TCHES.

  • http://www.bulls.com. Rigo Gonzalez

    LBJ is no MJ!
But, I will say this, and I’ve said it before.
This is the season LeBron became the best player currently playing in the NBA.
    Sorry, Kobe.

  • mjNotkobe

    Scottie’s on crack? That’s sad.

  • T-Money

bulls fans: explain to me why noah is untouchable and yet wasn’t on the floor at the end of the biggest game of the season? the bulls finished the game with thomas-gibson. wow.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Scottie=moron.

  • http://www.bulls.com. Rigo Gonzalez

    It was definitely arguable before.
    But not now.
LeBron is now officially > Kobe.
As for their body of work over their careers, though, Kobe’s still trumps LeBron’s easily.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

What’s more prestigious, being the best player in the regular season, or being the best player through three rounds in the post-season?
Dirk has been the best player, and has looked like the second best player in the league, period.
Bron has become a killer, it seems. Rose shot 6% from the field when being guarded by LeBron. 6%!!
Bron absolutely dominated Rose when the two were matched-up this series.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Rigo your 10:40 comment is what I have been saying to myself lately too. Your 100% right.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

and here’s the kicker: tomorrow is my bday! DAH!
all i wanted was a game 6 win, but no =\
well that and to win a damn slamonline contest…
tmoney: f*ck it! trade his as$!
im kind of irrational this morning.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

Dallas shoutout, American Airlins shoutout and shameless and corny tagline for the mavericks and American Airlines Center. “When the AA/C is on, the Heat goes down.” That’s terribly good, right?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

From the @whitehoteboy Twitter feed: “Scottie, we watched you attach your trailer hitch to MJ and make you relevant, then he used you as he gained age to do his dirty work. Stop”

  • Waffles

Yeah, that 10:25 comment from T-Money was from me. Not sure why it showed up as T-Money.

  • vtrobot

LBJ completely shutting down Rose’s sh*t at the end of these last couple games was more impressive than those big three. Despite the fact that many on here said there was no way that ‘Bron could handle him, I can’t remember seeing Rose that out of sorts. Mavs in 6. F Booz.

  • logues

Eboy: miami’s lack of a post presence is finally going to catch up with them. dallas is very solid thru their whole lineup, and their bench. haywood and chandler are the 2 biggest guys on the court, can help protect basket and get boards. however, dallas doesnt really have anyone that can guard dwade or bron 1 on 1. marion maybe, but thats about it. but miami has noone who can guard dirk. also, i think dallas moves the ball incredibly good and they somehow continue to get wide open threes all game. miami does a good job of closing out, but dallas has too many weapons

  • http://slamonline.com Michael

Eboy, you got a twitter? I’ve had some fun with BC on twitter, he’s a cool guy even though I was kinda provoking him. Any other twitter accounts that are mainly NBA related tweets.
    Oh and cosign Philo.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    I’m sure they’re terrified.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I do and that’s my id.

  • T-Money

did someone hear what ric bucher said on the radio yesterday. HIGH-LA-RIOUS. a few highlights: -rose is a better offensive player AND defensive player than lebron. -rose’s supporting cast now is weaker than bron’s was in cleveland. -rose made good decisions down the stretch in this series, it’s just that his teammates kept failing him. -based on what he saw vs miami, he’s more convinced than ever that rose is the best playe in the nba. -stats don’t matter. dan lebatard, who’s usually very witty and sarcastic, was silent, didn’t know what to say and wasn’t sure if bucher was serious.

  • T-Money

logues: why would miami’s lack of a post presence catch up to them now instead of vs boston or chicago?

  • feez22

This year was THE YEAR to take advantage of miami’s shortcomings. It was THE YEAR to capitalise on the fact that miami had NO TRUE CENTER and NO TRUE PG. now you are going to give an “incomplete” team a chance to win a title when they aren’t even the full team we will see next year. they have the MID LEVEL EXCEPTION next year… If they get nene or samuel dalembert a REAL CENTER and implement a REAL OFFENSE that maximizes the roleplayer’s strengths well… let me put it lightly… they will be unbeatable. No matter what the bulls do… even if the bulls get a scoring SG. If the heat can beat the bulls without a true center, mike bibby (who btw in “per” was the worst player in nba playoff history entering the series) and without a true offensive system then what do you think is going to happen when they IMPLEMENT 2 of those 3 things in the offseason? Chicago fans… yall should know this deal already. Give talent an offensive system where they can get easy buckets and a servicable big man that’s good at defense and well… u have a dynasty. deal with it or just take a 4 yr break from the nba.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    oh ric bucher…
broussard brought up a very interesting point this morning.
what if the heat picked up greg oden in the summer and he could stay relatively healthy. no one’s gonna pay him big bucks so the heat could get a young, BIG center for cheap to solve their supposed “problems” down low.
i think that would be…oh god that would suck.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    *for everyone else.

  • T-Money

feez: even if they get a legit center and pg, the beauty of the wade-miller-bron-ud-bosh crunch time line-up is that they’re just very good ball players – forget the positions. they can switch every pick and are all comfortable operating inside or outside on offense and defense. They all are good shooters, good passers, good rebounders and good team defenders. that’s TOUGH.

  • feez22

btw to the idiot rick bucher that says rose has a less of a supporting cast than lebron did in cleveland… The bulls were in EVERY GAME v. the heat this entire series. Rose was horrible from games 3-5 yet they had a chance to win all 3. When lebron had a bad game v. the celtics last yr… it was BLOWOUT. in fact, the cavs were blown out in games 4 and 5 with lebron playing subpar. When rose played subpar the bulls were still in every single game. Rose avg 23ppg on 35% shooting this series facing the kind of defense that lebron faced last yr. lebron avg 26ppg on 45% shooting last yr and his team lost badly. im sorry… id take the bulls support over the 09-10 cavs support ANY DAY.

  • logues

T-money: no particular reason. vs boston if rondo doesnt get hurt miami might not even be alive yet, and dont even give me the “theres a lot of ifs and mights” cuz u know damn well rondos injury hurt them big time and def changed the series. but anyway, vs chicago the bulls just plain dont have enough offensive weapons, and with all the mavs weapons they have and how great they move the ball they shouldnt have problems putting up points. so, i just dont know if bron and wade can carry them enough vs dallas without having a post presence to go to. and no, chris bosh is not a post presence. if you look back on the last 10 yrs or so, every championship team has had a go to post player. bron and wade may cancel out anything i said by dominating, but this is just my opinion

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

The MJ Bulls NEVER had a post presence….besides from Mike in the 2nd threepeat.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

I really think you should only blame the refs if you’re a hardcore Bulls fan. Yeah, way too many free throws gifted to them in crunch time (WTF on the Wade 4 point play) after the Bron clothesline from Boozer. But they didn’t take the lead on free throws, they took them on pretty much wide open 3s. That’s bad D, not cheating.

  • feez22

Eboy i made an error there but u know what i mean. If this team can compete like this without being “complete” they will be damn near unbeatable when they fill that hole @ center & implement an offense that isn’t almost completely iso oriented.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Angel of Stern

people I hate the most in order 1. Skip Bayless 2. Rick bucher

  • G Diesel

One of the former Sacramento Kings perenial losers will get a ring and the other one will be tormented forever. These finals are about Bibby vs Stojakovic. Lol
