Post Up: Loud and Clear

Bulls make statement in Game 1; Thunder dismiss Grizzlies.

Oklahoma City 105, Memphis 90

It lacked that distinct elimination drama and was without a singular defining moment, but Oklahoma City’s 15-point Game 7 win over Memphis perhaps did something equally as important—it enhanced our already bloated feelings towards Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

Durant did everything we ask of a star in a big game: He took the ball to the basket, he was aggressive, and he made sure his team was going to live or die with his output. 39 points was obviously great, but it was his 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 9 trips to the line that perhaps best embodied his day, especially after the disappoint of the prior game.

Westbrook made a truce with his detractors, delivering just the fifth triple double (14 points, 10 rebounds, 14 assists) in a Game 7 ever, and yet with it he perhaps reaffirmed their feelings that he doesn’t have to shoot thirty times to have a profound impact.

The Thunder got huge contributions from two reserves in particular: Nick Collison and James Harden. Collison was terrific with 12 rebounds, 3 blocks and tough interior defense against that respected Griz frontline. Harden brings an invaluable third scoring option—his 17 points and hot shooting stretch pushed the Thunder.

What can we say about Memphis that hasn’t already been said? They owed us nothing and gave plenty. Wholly, they were terrific of course, but today lacked the energy we’ve become accustomed to in the postseason. Zach Randolph had 17 and 10 to lead them. In defeat, the best compliment available is that we’ll remember this team and their run.

OKC’s run isn’t finished yet. They’ll meet Dallas in a winnable Western Conference Finals.—Todd Spehr

Chicago 103, Miami 82

Before we get into the proceedings this evening, I just want to say to Bulls fans everywhere, enjoy Taj Gibson while you can. With his performance in the Playoffs the last few games, and especially with what he did last night against Dwyane Wade and the Miami Heat, kid just made himself a lot of money. Chicago won’t be able to keep him when his contract is up next year.

Moving on…

Nobody could’ve predicted what happened in Game 1. Most people seemed to agree that no matter how many games this series went, they would all be low-scoring, grind it out affairs. But the Bulls obviously don’t subscribe to popular opinion.

After a back and forth first half that saw both teams tied at 48 points apiece, Chicago broke the game open in the second half to the tune of 55-34 head to head points, 17-0 on second chance points, 9 offensive rebounds and only 1 turnover. The Miami Heat were eviscerated in every facet of the game in the final 24 minutes and the Chicago Bulls easily took Game 1 of the ECF by 21 points(!) with a final score of 103-82.

It was the worst loss Miami has had in the Playoffs this year (they lost by just 4 points in both the first and second rounds) and the first time they’ve trailed in a best of seven series.

Luckily for Heat fans, what the Bulls did to them in Game 1 most likely won’t be repeated in Game 2. Miami will be much more prepared, aggressive and looking to get a split in Chicago. However, the Bulls did send a very strong message to the Heat with this win that they’re not pushovers and Miami is going to have to bring it. The Heat have to forget about this game quickly and come out strong to try and win on Wednesday night and go back to Miami for Game 3 tied 1-1.—Bryan Crawford (@_BryanCrawford)

SO Jamal Magloire has already played more in this series then I thought he would in the playoffs.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

T-Money, you’re right except for Magloire… He played..and was horrendous last night. I actually felt pain watching him play lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Russell Westbrook played absolutely great last night. If he could do that consistently OKC will be a title contender every year until him and durant get a divorce. He was not at all the same player as earlier in the series/season, he turned into the player many of us had been saying he should become for the last couple weeks.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haven’t read any comments, but shout out to RigNig! Taj is that guy! Daaaamn! What a good game. The heat don’t have an offense. It seem to be just out-athleticise, and out run everytime. Not a good playoff playbook. Bulls D is exactly what i had hoped and expected. Go OKC also!

  • JTaylor21

It’s simple for the Heat in this series, rebound and limit the bulls’ second chance points. MIA actually shot a better percentage than the bulls last night but the bulls took almost 20 more shots which was the results of offensive rebounds leading to second chance points. There’s no excuse for Bron grabbing 6 rbs and wade grabbing only 3, those guys have to crash the board and help out on the glass.
If they don’t do the fundamental things like boxing out, they will be going fishing very soon.

  • HAMMER

Man. Had 2 miss watching this game. But it was 2 spend time w/ la familia, so its all good. But man, what an @$$ whuppin. But its just 1 game. So im not gonna overly celebr8. Mayb just a shot of Cazadores, haha! But that’s it. This win was very commendable

  • mdshuai33

Why does everyone assume the Thunder have a winnable series against the mavs? And how would the Grizzlies have “pummeled [dallas] into submission?” Call memphis the 2007 warriors: blessed with match-ups. Shouldn’t the series agasint the Thunder throw up more red flags for OKC since it took them 7 games? Whatever. Everyone y’all said chicago had no chance against Miami either. I guess in two more weeks you will look stupid and I’ll be right again.

  • http://bulls.com airs

come back from a 2 hour meeting and this is it??
haters must be in retreat today, this is weird.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I personally don’t think Dallas is going to lose to OKC. I don’t at all feel like Memphis had any kind of shot against them. Dallas v Mia is what I have as the finals, but a Dallas v Chi finals match-up will be most interesting IMO because of the matchups.

  • http://bulls.com airs

@tmoney, i agree that the heat need to go big against chicago.
but, even if they do i don’t see how they can hang.
its not like dampier or big Z is gonna dominate any of chicago’s bigs with their physical presence, and we all saw how well maglore did.
and if they go small, well..yeah.
they key is simply lebron and dwade, they played poorly and they got blown out. i don’t expect either of them to play like that again, but chicago’s defense can hold their own

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

For the record, I really REALLY want the Bulls to beat the Heat (duh) but if the Bulls met the Mavs in the finals and the Mavs prevailed, I’d be a little salty but I can’t get mad at Kidd, Dirk, Marion, Terry and Butler finally getting a ring.
    Besides, Rose is only 22.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t know if Dallas even can beat Chicago in a series. Chicago has Gibson and Noah to guard Dirk. Effort wings like Brewer/Bogans/Deng close out on shooters better then most anyone in the league. And Dallas notoriously struggles with quick PG’s….and they don’t come much quicker then Derrick Rose.

  • http://bulls.com airs

im sayin, from here on out regardless of the outcome, win or lose, im happy with the bulls season.
we weren’t even supposed to be here, remember? it was supposed to be like…the bucks, haha.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I think predicting a Dallas/Chicago finals is way too immature.
Miami will be out for revenge in game 2.
If the Bulls can win the next one, and one of the two in Miami, it’s over.
Miami won’t come back from being down 3-1.
@ airs – I know, right?! I keep forgetting that sportswriter’s name, he writes for like CBS.com or something. But he predicted the Bulls to finish THIRD in the Central Division behind the Bucks and Pacers!
Bulls fans need to blow up his inbox.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    *premature, not immature.
    Ha ha.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

don’t get it twisted matic, i still have Miami winning that series. I’m not going to change my pick because of one game.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Very well, Soop.
One game won’t change people’s minds, and that’s a good thing.
Hell, people who were predicating the Heat would sweep the Bulls are now saying Heat in 5. Lol

  • JTaylor21

    We?

  • JTaylor21

    represent, the lollypop guild

  • http://bulls.com airs

i know we all…okay well some, try to be rational and take it a game at a time.
but how does this one game NOT affect how one feels about this series. if not even just a little.
we all expected a grind it out game with some people saying heat will win by 5 or less or bulls win by 5 or less or something.
    and then THIS happened.
i get its one game, but it was a pretty impressive one game.

  • http://bulls.com airs

imma keep referring to the chicago bulls as “we” from now on.
just cuz you love it so much jtaylor =D LOLZERS

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Uhm this games doesn’t effect how I feel about the outcome of the series because Chicago did not beat Miami at anything skill based other then 3pt shooting. The offensive rebounds are a product of effort (also a product of inexplicable coaching decisions, like making Zydrunas and Dampier inactive….but keeping Jamal Magloire), the turnovers are a product of a lack of concentration. LeBron and Wade combined for 33 points, which I would bet is a single game total for just one of them in each of the games remaining in the series. i’m not making excuses, i honestly don’t even really care who wins, this is just how I see the matchups/series playing out.

Kevin Durant is officially a “killer”.
Last year he had “killer” tendencies.
    Now, he’s a “killer”.
    Assassin.
    Widow maker.

  • JTaylor21

To the f*cking f*g that’s using my name, here’s to a tornado destroying that shoebox you call a home.
Now I know why fewer reasonable b-ball fans are commenting on here, bunch of immature clowns.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Also, the “Kingsmen” looked confused nearly the entire 3rd quarter, By the 4th, the game seemed to be over already.
They should have rode Bosh through the entire game, in my opinion.
And, the “Kingsmen” looked hung over from the partying they did all weekend after they dispatched the Celtics.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

i get that nbk, but i think you’re kind of underrating offensive rebounds and hustle points and such.
they may not be “skill based” but they are a determining factor in this series, and i think bulls, ahem we, win that category almost every night.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Bulls have beaten the Heat on the boards in every game this year.
You expect that to change anytime soon, Soop?
Especially with Spo using this small lineup?

  • JTaylor21

Rigo, looks like you finally made it after all the partying bulls fans did last night. Remember, hot tea is the key to shaking off a hangover.

  • ThaWindy

LBJ said he was up at 3 o’clock in the morning going over game film and the scouting report. So I cant see how he would not be focused. When the Bulls don’t go DRose crazy, and Deng and Booz play well, the Bulls are a tuff team to beat. They talk about the Heats bench not producing but Wade, LBJ, and Bosh take all the shoots.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I think the Bulls will beat the heat in every game on the offensive glass. Every single game. But I really don’t think it will be a 13 rebound difference very often. (19 to 6) – - I was more surprised by Miami finishing with more turnovers then Chicago, that I didn’t expect, and is the only thing that would worry me if I were a Heat fan going forward. Young teams play great in big adrenaline moments, like game 1 of your first conference championship. Let’s wait and see how they do in games 2-6 before we jump to any conclusions. (not those of you that are here now, just a general wish for those that judge series after 1 game)

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Thanks for the tip, JT.
The Heat should’ve kept that in mind after their second round blowout bash. :D

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

    Rigomatic FTW!

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

I really hope the heat. Come out aggressive in Miami wed…the one bright spot in that game is they really kept rose out on the perimeter..if the bulls offense stalls and it’s just him shooting well defended 3′s from traps then they can win IMO

  • JTaylor21

Rigo, fair enough but at least it was at the end of a series win unlike all those bulls fans parlaying after one game.
    Stay hungry, my friends.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    ^Remix ‘em JT21.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I mostly went overboard with my comments last night only because so many dudes on here thought the Heat would sweep them or beat them in 5.
So it was simply me laughing @ everyone who thought the Heat would trample the Bulls.
I still expect a long, hard (pause) series.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

wasn’t nobody partying last night cuz of a game 1 win.
sure, bulls fans blew up twitter/facebook and slam and rubbed it in everyone’s faces.
but it wasn’t ridiculous like a rock concert or crying at center court or some sh*t like that,
i mean, who the hell would do that? right? haha

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

All the emotions that came pouring out of the heat after the celtics series might have given them a competitive hang over against Chicago. They just didn’t look focused as a team last night.

  • JTaylor21

I think y’all are forgetting that the game was tied at halftime and the heat even had a lead at one point in the 3rd but getting hammered on the boards and giving up 31 second-chance points was the deciding factor. I’m not saying that the Heat will outrebound the bulls in the upcoming games but if they do the basic things like boxing out and limiting the bulls second-chance points, they have a great shot at winning Gm 2.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    *taking notes for Thursday morning*

  • http://slamonline Brion

This may sound ridiculous but wheres Dampier? He should at least be in there getting rebouds and giving hard fouls.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    he’s inactive. no idea why

  • dsleepy

i still think heat have a better chance of winning the series, the bulls just shot lights out and seemed to get all the bounces going their way. if they get lulled into a false sense of security from this, they could be in for a very rough game 2.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    The Bulls shot lights out?
They shot 43% compared to the Heat’s 47%.
Sure, the Bulls were 10/21 from 3′s, but I’d still attribute this W more to offensive boards and defense than I would their shooting.

  • JTaylor21

Some moron on BSPN just had the nerve to compare Taj’s dunk on Wade to MJ faking out two knicks defenders and dunking on PEwing.
Those clowns on that channel don’t have a clue when it comes to basketball.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Tom Chambers on Mark Jackson would be more applicable, only Taj wasn’t up nearly as high.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

That dunk was nice, yes. but its not an everlasting dunk like any of those. This replay will last what a year or 3?, (how often do you see Baron Davis on Andrei Kirelinko anymore? and that dunk was better) and the highlight will be used in the over abundance of Taj Gibson career highlight videos that are sure to plague neverland.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Taj’s agent will definitely use that in his FA video presentation.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

19 offensive rebounds… Are you serious Miami? Step your box-out game up!

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

A lot of nice dunks in that game though. Bosh’s facial on Boozer was nice.
