Post Up: Pump Up the Volume

Chris Bosh leads way as Heat take Game 3.

Miami 96, Chicago 85

For the second consecutive game the Miami Heat have seemingly imposed their will on the Chicago Bulls. The Heat’s speed on the defensive side of the ball, the fact that they switch everything and the success that they’ve had in keeping Derrick Rose out of the lane has given them a 2-1 series lead, winning Game 3 with a final score of 95-86, and Chicago’s decisive victory in Game 1 has long since been forgotten given their play over the last two games.

Chris Bosh, the proverbial whipping boy in Miami this season, turned in yet another outstanding game with 34 points; LeBron James chipped in 22 points, 10 assists and 6 rebounds; and Dwyane Wade contributed 17 points and 9 rebounds. Udonis Haslem, the hero in Game 2, had another solid outing with 8 points and 4 rebounds in 24 minutes of play on the floor, but it was the team defense of the Heat that was the most impressive as they forced Chicago into shooting 41 percent from the field as compared to Miami’s blistering 50 percent.

For the Bulls, it was yet another struggle for Derrick Rose. He contributed 20 points on 8-19 shooting and in the fourth quarter he managed to score just 2 points on 2 field goal attempts. Miami’s scheme to keep him out of the lane has worked exceptionally well and Chicago still hasn’t figured out a way to adjust and make the game easier for him.

Carlos Boozer tuned in his best game of the postseason thus far with 26 points and 17 rebounds, but like Rose, Boozer shot just 8-19 from the field and continued to frustrate fans by missing countless layups at the rim for 3-point play opportunities. It’s hard to imagine a player putting up those kinds of numbers and still having virtually no impact on the game, but that was the case for Boozer in Game 3. Joakim Noah, who pulled a Kobe Bryant by making a homophobic slur directed at a fan behind Chicago’s bench after drawing his second foul in the 1st quarter, may have been amped up a little too much as he turned in a very disappointing line with just 1 point and 5 rebounds. He did have 6 assists in the game, but his contributions were sorely needed on the offensive and rebounding ends.

The loss Sunday night is only the second time this season that Chicago has lost back-to-back games. They’ll be looking to earn a split in Game 4 on Tuesday night in an absolute must-win game. Losing and going down 3-1 in the series to these Miami Heat will effectively mean that their season is over. —Byran Crawford (@_BryanCrawford)

okay maybe it is the bulls fan in me.
but notable calls: the screen from noah, lebron taking a “charge”, lebron traveling like a muvugga and getting away with it, and a few no calls against noah and rose.
but it is what is, bulls still didn’t do enough offensively to contend.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Greater impact is one thing, so yes, LeBron had that. But dominating his counterpart, head-to-head, no, LeBron did not dominate Luol Deng last night.
Remember, Luol didn’t shoot a single FT last night while LeBron went to the line 9 times. Both shot 6-13 from the field though, plus Lu had 8 boards. So I didn’t see any “domination.” I thought both played well and neutralized each others contributions offensively, but again, LBJ did have a greater impact on the defensive side of the ball, especially in help situations.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

LMAO @ the last three comments. Fine, you guys are all correct….every trait the Heat showed in the last two games…and every poor one the Bulls have shown are all going to go away and nothing that has been established after 3 games will continue.

  • tRay

@Allenp I couldn’t agree with you more. Every time Wade had the ball he almost got it stolen before he reached mid court. He does a lot of East/West handling and he’s not tight with his handle.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Not Crawford’s 11:44a.

  • BYEBYE

The bulls aren’t gonna win with Noah playing the way he played now this scandal and fine he’s gonna receive is gonna be a distraction to the team also they need to play cj Watson with rose and let him penetrate more cause rose won’t be able to get to the rim as often as he usually does cause he flat out tired drose was MVP he deserved it but he doest have the talent at that certain position (2 guard) or I would let deng play 2 guard an t Gibson at small forward but other wise it’s over lol
Do we realize the heat are about to play and beat everybody they lost to this post season WOW bring on the mavs

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

so the heat can come back from a blowout loss and win two grind it out games…
yet the bulls, who have the capacity to beat this team and have beat them 5 times including a blowout, have no chance at adjusting?
    ha?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    sorry, 4 times*

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Eboy – you’re talking like the Heat have dominated the Bulls and some drastic change needs to take place. The last 2 games have been decided in the later stages of the 4th quarter. Have your fun today though. And to all the people talking about Bulls fans coming out of the woodwork when they’re winning, I present to you ByeBye, apparently the site’s biggest Heat fan.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

airs….keep staying blind, Stevie Wonder Jr. It’s admirable, though.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

And yes, let’s all reflect back on the regular season as the barometer we should be using to judge how teams compare with one another in May. Hey…did you know the Heat lost the regular season series 3-1 to the Celtics? No? You can have that one on the house.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

im jus saying, we’re acting like the heat have completely blown the bulls out of the water.
they’ve won by 10 and 11, and it was even a little closer than the final scores project.
we don’t even need to look back at regular season, we can look back to last week and see the bulls are more than capable of beating this heat team.
but i’ll be stevie wonder, everybody Uptight today, but everythings alright namsayin

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Taj Gibson started talkin to Bosh isolated, Bosh was what 1-4 at the time? Bosh is way way better then every big on Chicago – So I don’t at all understand talkin to him, making him motivated. I mean maybe it was the stuff Boozer said off the court, but it seems like Taj Gibson signed the death certificate on that isolation play where he fouled Bosh. This series is not very surprising to me at all, the Bulls are just too reliant on Rose for them to be favored in this series.

  • JTaylor21

The series is far from over. I can see MIA losing GM4 the same way I see them winning GM4 and going up 3-1 back to Chicago. The series isn’t over until one team has 4 wins and sends the other fishing. Both teams are too great on the defensive end for there to for there to be a repeat of the bulls GM1 performance.
Like CB1 said, can’t believe I’m quoting Chris Bosh, you can’t get too high or too low. Remember it’s the playoffs, one minute a team is in control of the series, the next it’s tied 2-2 and the other squad has the advantage going back home.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I think the time for saying that the games were a lot closer than the final score indicates (aka moral victories) is over at this point. The Bulls need to actually win one of those kinds of games.

  • JTaylor21

People do know that a 10 point win is huge in the playoffs especially when it involves two great defensive teams. A 10 point win in this series is like a 15-20 pt in the OKC vs Dal series just due to the kind of suffocating defense being played on both ends. A win is a win regardless, so it shouldn’t matter if it’s by 20 or by 3.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    i agree, BC.
i just think people are over looking the bulls right now. they ain’t out of it. yet.
but if they lose tomorrow, heat “fans” and eboy and cheryl can write the bulls off then.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

and a win is a win, no one will preach that more than me.
honestly if the heat win, best of luck to them in the finals

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Oh and Carlos Boozer on defense, is a complete and utter joke. He doesn’t even understand the concept of positioning, he’s out of position so often that even if he was a good defender he wouldn’t be able show it very often.

  • bull22

man its easy for the heat fans to talk trash where their team is doing well, chicago is still not out of it, and derrick rose is coming down to hard on himself, considering the officiating has been horrible since the bulls tied the game 73-73 back in game 2.. i will however recognize that the bulls are shooting poorly and are not finishing at the rim… dont give up yet chicago!

  • T-Money

It’s not MIke Bibbby that’s defending Rose, it’s Joel Anthony or UD meeting him at the free throw line. Team defense. The 1vs1 match up is almost irrelevant, Mike Bibby’s job is to keep Rose on one side once he commits and NOT stop him (because he just can’t).

  • T-Money

I also thought it was a brilliant adjustment when Miami refused to send someone to cover Noah at the elbow since Noah was looking to dish it off to cutters and not score. That threw a monkey wrench in the Bulls “offense”. Thibs has to be less rigid again and just finish the games with Rose, Deng + his 3 best players on that night. Yesterday, it should have been CJ, Rose, Brewer, Deng, Gibson. That line up can work since Miami doesn’t play big, CJ on Rio, Rose on Wade, Brewer on James, Deng on UD, Gibson on Bosh. CREATIVITY!!!!

  • T-Money

E: do you stick with Mike Miller in the 8-man rotation or do you go with James Jones? JJ will actually shoot 3s. Mike Miller’s potential is greater but he played 13 invisible minutes again.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Mike Miller is a much much better defender then James Jones, and he also rebounds (except yesterday, he did absolutely nothing and was the only Heat player with a negative +/-) which James Jones just effectively doesn’t do.

  • http://twitter.com/BeezKneezy LA Huey

This team is going to be scary if Mike Miller plays to his offensive potential.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

To free up the paint, I’d rather have JJ stretching the floor….since Mike doesn’t even look at the basket and when he does it’s usually putrid. But yes, nbk is right, Mike is a solid rebounder and makes better basketball plays.

  • JTaylor21

Defense and MMiller should never be mentioned in the same sentence, never!!!!
Both guys are turrible defenders, the only difference being that Miller is the better rebounder/playmaker while JJ is strictly a better spot-up shooter. It’s a good thing Bron is able to play 45mins a night because both guys aren’t that good.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

JTaylor if you had any idea what you were talking about you would know that Mike Miller has actually been one of the most efficient perimeter defender’s in the league this season. The whole league. Just because he’s unathletic and white doesn’t mean he’s a bad defender.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    T Money
I agree with Charles that running that many pick and rolls with poor offensive players makes it easy for Miami to trap with no fear.
I would not that Bron has been an excellent rim defender this series which I think has surprised the Bulls somewhat in the halfcourt. Boozer was clearly looking for Bron on that game at one point.

  • T-Money

Theyre both good team defenders and are usually where they aresupposed to be on rotations, which is half the battle. I hate it when Mike attqcks the paint of the kick out. Just shoot it man!!! And its not about the hands, all the writers are reporting that he doesnt miss in Practice or warm ups.

  • JTaylor21

Oh really. So now we are quoting “efficiency” as a stat to judge who’s a good defender and who’s not?
Get out of here with that efficient crap, it’s either you’re a good defender or you’re not. So because Bibby is guarding Rose during his recent struggles, does that automatically make him an efficient defender? Both players suck on the defensive end and race has nothing to do with it.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

What is a little strange about last night was that none of the players were great on the glass and they still won handily. Bosh only had five boards after all. Did anybody else think that the physical nature of the Heat’s defense early rattled Chicago and that thy got frustrated by the refs?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

    i’m liking tmoney’s lineup.
i wish the bulls could do a line change like in hockey, booz for gibson.
i really underrated miami’s defense, i had no idea it was like that. bulls definitely need something other than a pick and roll if they wanna hang offensively, but korver’s been mia all series.

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

How do you want me to word it for you then JTaylor? He’s been one of the best perimeter defender’s in the league this season because he’s been good when he plays? is that better? the use of the word efficiency is your problem? “its an issue when you say things you can prove, i’d rather you speculate!” that sounds like more like your style of conversation. anyway, if you want some proof you can click my name. If you want some speculation then, I doubt you actually watch as much basketball as you act like you do.

  • http://slamonline.com The Fresh Prince of Nsam

Mr Ben OSBORNE, why don’t we have games liveblogs anymore?

  • JTaylor21

Typical Grand Wizardry tactics; interject race into every conversation.
Jonny Flynn is one of the worst defenders in the L and he’s blacker than Whoppi Goldberg’s lips, so what the hell does being white have to do with it?

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

pffff hahahaha, whoopi do got some black lips

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

its has nothing to do with it, which is why I said what I said. I mean you can act ignorant to the fact that skin color does play into perception if you want. The fact that I said just because he’s white is not grand wizardry, it means what it should, forget that he’s white. If we were talking about something else with a stereotype attached I would have brought that up too because I just assume there are atleast some people reading this comment section who absent-mindidly buy into widespread stereotypes. — whatever though, I knew that would be the portion of what I said that you focus on.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Wow.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Grand Wizadry did make laugh though. Adding that to my lexicon.

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

What is the reason you said not to bring Miller and defensive up together anyway Taylor?

  • JTaylor21

The reasons are Miller’s a terrible one-on-one defender and just because it looks like he plays good team defense doesn’t mean he’s actually a good defender. Anybody could look like a good defender when you have wade, bron, and joel covering your a** (exhibit A; Bibby). I’ve seen basically 99.9999% of heat games this season and never once seen Miller playing anything that resembles great defensive on the perimeter
I just call it how I see it and when it comes to basketball, I’m color blind. I enjoy what Dirk just as much as I enjoy watching Bron.

  • JTaylor21

    *watching* Dirk

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

Actually the stat, you know where I said click my name for proof, shows that he is an exceptional one on one defender this year. So once again, where are you gettin this from? you are either lying about watching heat games, or lying about paying attention to the games your watching. Once again, the stats (plural) I am providing to you, prove that Mike MIller has been an ELITE one on one defender in the minutes he’s played this season. And actually an average team defender. So once again, wth are you talking about?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    Stats are for…oh, nevermind…. :)

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

you see why I use stats right? people like taylor make up something about a player, then make a drastically over-exaggerated claim, like to have watched 99.9% of Heat Games (which means he’s watched every minute of every heat game except about a quarter and a half or 81.9918 games this season) so I have to show something that can actually be viewed, compared, measured, and considered by anyone. Like a group of stats.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I watched every quarter of every Heat game this season=100%. I like round numbers.

  • http://www.backpicks.com/2011/04/11/the-nbas-top-defenders-in-2011/ nbk

    lol

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    I get you.
    But I’m saying. Mike Miller….ELITE?
Sure you don’t just mean good?
Also, the link you have is the same link I put on here for all of us to laugh at.
You laughed at it too and said dude who wrote it is an idiot.
I mean, Brandon Jennings the best defensive PG?
Gortat the best defensive Center? Better than Howard? GTFOH!
Also, you realized that stat nerd only uses a small sample size, like 10 games, not the whole season for his geek stats on that article, right?

  • JTaylor21

Que? I’m sorry but using stats to guage a certain player’s defensive ability borderlines on stupidity. Last night, bron played stellar D on Deng but there isn’t a stat out there that will tell you the same. Sometimes stats can’t really capture what really goes on the floor especially on the defensive end.
I usually respect stats but in the infamous words of the real enigmatic; stats are for pu**ies.
