Post Up: Rocking and Reeling

DRose is unstoppa-Bull. Mavs level Lakers.

Chicago 99, Atlanta 82

Critics like to call the Chicago Bulls a “one man show.” But when that one man show is clicking like it was yesterday, it’s the best show in the NBA.

DRose hung an MVP-like 44 points (a career high) on the Atlanta Hawks last night on 16-27 shooting from the field and 4-7 from behind the three-point line. He also had 5 rebounds, 7 assists and only committed 2 turnovers. In a word, he was unstoppa-Bull. He carried the entire team on his back as the other four starters combined to score just 21 points(!).

Rose did get some help offensively from the Bench Mob (Taj Gibson had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Kyle Korver had 11 points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc), but it was his performance that captivated everyone and seemed to have the Atlanta Hawks shook.

ATL did get a solid Game 3 from Josh Smith (17 points and 13 rebounds) who had been missing in the previous two games, and also got another outstanding performance from young Jeff Teague who seems to be resigning the injured Kirk Hinrich to coming off the bench next year (it won’t be the first time) with each and every game. Teague had yet another 20-point outing and committed just his second turnover in the entire series. His play has been a pleasant surprise to everyone, especially Hawks fans.

But, outside of the tremendous play of JSmoove and Teague, Atlanta didn’t get much contribution anywhere else. “Iso” Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Marvin Williams scored just 10 points apiece and Jamal Crawford only managed 7 points off the bench. In a game where you thought all of these guys would be fired up to play at home and ready to send a strong message to the Bulls by going up 2-1 in the series, they came out flat and were forced to sit back and watch the Derrick Rose show like everyone else.

Game 4 now becomes a must-win for the Atlanta. If they don’t come out and play with better energy and focus on Sunday, the next time the Hawks come back to the “A,” it could very well be to start their summer vacations. — Bryan Crawford / @_BryanCrawford

L.A. Lakers 92, Dallas 98

RBX said it best on “High Powered” from Dr. Dre’s classic LP, The Chronic: “I drop bombs like Hiroshima.”

The Dallas Mavericks dropped bombs on the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night and when the dust settled, they come away with a 98-92 victory to go up 3-0 in the series.

The Lakers are leveled. The Lakers are shook. The Lakers are literally on the ropes. Now it’s up to Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant—who continued to be defiant and delusional in the post-game presser about his team’s comeback chances—to dig through the rubble to find the team’s collective basketball soul.

And Pau Gasol. For the third straight game, Gasol was MIA for L.A., finishing with a paltry 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Spaniard was at times lifeless, listless and completely owned by Dirk Nowitzki, who finished with a game-high 32 points and 9 rebounds.

This was a very winnable game for the Lakers. They were up in the fourth, but let the home team close the game on a 20-7 run. Nowitzki and Jason Terry each had seven points in the rally.

“It’s great we just didn’t panic early when they were going inside all night,” said Nowitzki. “They were up there eight in the fourth quarter and we stuck with it. We said in the huddle that we keep fighting, keep plugging away and finally got some stops and got some shots to fall on the offensive end and that was big.”

The biggest gaffe for the visitors, though, was when Derek Fisher, usually poised under pressure, fouled Terry in the waning seconds of the game when it was still just a one-possession game. Jet stepped to the charity stripe and iced both freebies to go up 95-91 and it was curtains from there.

This game defied logic in that L.A. dominated points in the paint with Andrew Bynum leading the way with a team-high 21 points and 20 rebounds. Bryant was flat, Fisher was un-clutch and Gasol was Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.

“It’s tough,” said Bynum. “We played hard and we just gave it away at the end. We were up 7 with 8 minutes to go and let them hit two threes. Come down and we didn’t do anything offensively. They say 3 and out in baseball, we have about 5 and out. It’s tough.”

Laker Nation will be furious, they will be speechless, they will be inconsolable, but most of all, they will demand change if Dallas completes the sweep of the defending champs on Mother’s Day.

“We’re probably shocked a little bit,” said Lamar Odom. “Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand how we find ourselves in a game like that and we don’t know how to use each other’s strengths. We’ve been through it so many times, but we’re so stubborn with each other and it caught up to us. We need to find a way to close out a game.”

Change is the operative word for the Mavs, too, as they have finally changed their mindset as a team and exorcized their Playoff demons of 2006. Even if by some grand miracle they let the Lakers steal a game or two, they have proved that they are more than just regular-season stalwarts. They proved that they can compete in the NBA’s second season with the best of them, even the defending champs.

“It’s not just Dirk and Jason,” said coach Rick Carlisle. “Everybody is focused. We’re all trying to do something that we have never done, so the focus, the determination, the discipline, and all those things, is crucial. Dirk is one of the all-time greats, there’s no doubt about that, but we’re going for the ring and that’s one thing he hasn’t done in his career, and he’s one step closer, but we have a long way to go. And getting one more game from Los Angeles is going to be a lot of hard work and we’re going to have to stay humble and stay hungry.”

Dallas is slaying the Giant right before our eyes and it’s sending a cataclysmic jolt through all of basketball. The Mavs are for real, people, it’s time you started believing it. –Maurice Bobb

Derrick Rose. Taj had a great game last night and again he was outplaying Booz. I don’t care who starts, just make sure Taj is getting the most minutes if he’s playing better. The Lakers are done, unbelievable. Derrick Rose.

  • horsey

do they say “3 and out” in baseball? i thought it was a football term, but i don’t have the patience to watch baseball i guess….

  • Myung

Good write up, BC. Congrats on a great win. Rose was amazing last night. I was just in awe of some of his shots off the glass. Bulls are absolutely killing us on the boards. I’m not too confident we’ll win Game 4. Hopeful, but not confident. If we lose tomorrow, it’s a wrap in 5 for Chicago.

  • fourthree

When the Mavs took game one it was like wow they stole one. When they won game two people were like well they have gone 2-0 before and choked. In Mamba’s words they could win two games in a row too to even the series and for the most part people reacted yeah they could. And now this! Let’s put it like this, if you told me at the start of the playoffs that the Mavs would win three straight against the LA I woulda called you crazy. The Mavs are legit this year. IMO I don’t think they can sweep LA, but who knows?! Oh and that Derrick cat sure can score eh..

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Myung, the Bulls didn’t even play THAT well, they can still do much better, like you said it was rebounding (the Bulls killed the Hawks on the offensive glass) combined with an MVP performance.

  • Dontneedtoknow

Let LAKERS die a slow dead please…there is no coming back from this…RIP LAKERS

  • Myung

Teague has been a revelation this series. That’s literally the one bright spot for us. Also, as harsh as I am on Josh (and I am), he really did have a solid game for us (like BC wrote). I am very critical of him, but I would never condone boo-ing him the way the “home” crowd did last night. I think it’s gone too far, and it’s an indictment of our wack home crowd (IMO the worst in the entire NBA, since we show up late, pack the stands with visiting fans, and turn on the home team). I seriously cannot imagine Rick Sund bringing him back next season (while you’re at it, Rick, why don’t you not bring yourself back either… thanks). He has to be traded, for HIS (Josh’s) sake. The city has completely turned on him. Like I wrote in the other post (the Larry Drew one from yesterday), I don’t know why people are all of a sudden turning on Josh. It’s not like his poor shooting is a new phenomenon. I never liked him, but at least I’ve been consistent about it. Why people who used to cheer for him are all of a sudden bailing on him really irks me. I guess fair weather and bandwagon fans just haven’t been watching much of him until this series? I actually felt really bad for him last night.

If any team currently playing has the ability to push a 3-0 hole to a game 7 it’s LA, so I’m not celebrating until I hear the fat b*tch get on her Aretha Franklin/Chaka Khan ish. Can’t wait for my ears to ring. If they do get swept tomorrow, it will be the 1st time since ’98 that I’ll be rooting for a WC team to win it all. Unless some miracle happens and the Hawks make the finals lol.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

Oh yea, and I wouldn’t exactly call it the “best show” in the NBA, BC. That’s pure bias right there. He’s a helluva player, MVP and all that, but let’s not push it.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I agree with Jahmai, the Bulls did not play that well (outside of Rose), the Hawks how ever were AWFUL.
I skipped sections at a time after the Bulls went up double digits, I knew there was little chance of the Hawks making a come back and I didn’t want to waste my time.

  • Myung

How’s that midseason trade working out for you, Rick Sund? Jordan Crawford became Washington’s most consistent scoring option in April (and was, you know, our first round pick less than a year ago), Mike Bibby’s going to win a ring in less than a month (for the record, I was perfectly fine with us trading Bibby so I’m not really complaining about this one), we traded away our 2011 first round pick, and we brought in a declining POINT GUARD when we apparently already had a young POINT GUARD (you know, our first round pick from 2009) on our roster (you would just never know it because neither Woody or LD believed in Teague and he is only playing now because he is the only healthy PG on our roster). That, plus signing Joe for $40 million over his market value last summer, not trading Josh Smith when he had a relatively high trade value, and not trading Jamal (an expiring contract who has zero chance of re-signing with us this summer)… you’re doing a wonderful Billy Knight impersonation, sir!

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

BC’s write up are always biased, lol. He’s the Heinsohn of SlamOnline, in that he knows he is biased too. Obviously he is not as bad as Tommy.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Oh, and Dirk has pushed ahead as the best player of the post season so far.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

@ Allball: Agreed. You can make arguments for him and DRose being the best, but Dirk has certainly been the most impressive.

  • Yann Blavec

According to the 500 greaters players list, Jason Kidd is the greatest player never to have won a title.

  • Myung

For this postseason, I’d put Dirk first, ZBo second, Rose third, LeDwyane Wames in a tie for 4th, Russell Westbrook 129th, and an honorable mention goes to Dwight.

  • robb

Well Lakers’s cockiness and lack of respect for other teams finally is making them pay. They kept choking when it mattered the most and now they’re done. They won’t win 3 on a row with that poor execution they’re displaying. Gaslo is a huge disappointment. I l

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

    Biased, AllBall? Uhm, no…
I’ve been giving credit where it’s due since the beginning of the Playoffs. When the other team plays well and Chicago doesn’t, I acknowledge it, and vice-versa.

  • Yann Blavec

Jason kidd is the best *active player never to win a title.

  • robb

Well Lakers’s cockiness and lack of respect for other teams finally is making them pay. They kept choking when it mattered the most and now they’re done. They won’t win 3 on a row with that poor execution they’re displaying. Gasol is a huge disappointment. I love Dirk, I dont like the mavs but he deserves that ring more than anyone.

  • Myung

Yann… not Stockton? Barkley? Malone? Elgin? Ewing? Nique? Ice Man? Kidd is up there, but I’m not ready to put him above them.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

LOL! BC I am really shocked you don’t consider yourself biased.

  • Myung

    Ah, OK. Gotcha.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

    Myung, I like your list.

  • Yann Blavec

    Sorry, Myung.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

How was this particular write-up biased tho, AllBall? That’s my question.

  • Yann Blavec

Myung, Ason is listed 28, while P-Ew is 37st.

  • Myung

Kidd IS probably the best active player to never have won a ring (agreed), but a compelling case could be made that LeBron actually is (8 years in the League). His career numbers can’t compare (yet) with Kidd, but considering Kidd’s been in the League 9 years longer than Bron, I still think LeBron’s put together enough of a resume to be a Hall Of Famer even if he retired today. And if that’s the case, it can be argued that side by side, LeBron’s 8 years > Kidd’s 17 years. I’m personally not making that argument, but I think it CAN be made by LeBron fans.

  • Myung

Yann, I like how you wrote “P-Ew.” I got into Trash Talk many years ago by calling Patrick Ewing “P-Ew.” haha

  • Yann Blavec

    Dirk is still huge anyway.

  • el_larsen

i m a drose hater so i m not impressed .44points on jeff teague and a bad hawks defense?so what?how could he produced those poor game1 and 2 is the real question.lakers swept by soft mavs?this is cool!!

  • ripslam

Anyone else think Rose shooting close to 30 shots a game is a bit much? Great performance, but still.

  • http://www.dimemag.com Royal

Props to the mavs….they are flat out better than the Lakers right now….. even as a LA supporter ,I have to place some blame on Kobe…his stupid pass out shot and his deep fadeaway shot in the last three minutes put a fork in the Lakers….I understand Pau is playing like sh!t right now ,but a good amount of blame falls on Kobe and his poor late game play.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

“Best show in the league” is arguable. That write-up was not particularly biased, me saying your write ups are always biased is an exaggeration and is wrong. I think your write-ups are very bias when Rose has a poor game. When he has a good game I don’t think you are any more complimentary than the other websites.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

When Rose shoots 27 shots and has 44, I don’t know how any one can complain (ripslam). El_larsen, Teague started hot, but how many points did he score after the first quarter? Rose fell asleep a few times, but he out scored his opponent by 23 points! His opponent being Teague.

  • Myung

Allball, I’m not trying to argue with you, but Teague shot 8-13 while Rose was 16 for 27. So you can’t really say Rose outscored Teague by 23 points without mentioning that if you double Teague’s makes (8 to 16) and his FGA’s (13 would be 26), he will pretty much have put up the exact same numbers (off FG’s) as Rose. And I do agree with ripslam that he’s shooting a lot, but I don’t agree with it being too much. 30 fga’s is a lot for a James Jones or even a Jeff Teague, but Rose doesn’t have a choice. Like Zeke in the Bad Boys era and Iverson as a Sixer, Rose HAS to shoot a lot in order for his team to have a chance to win. Depending on the rest of your lineup, sometimes a guy (even a PG) has to shoot a lot, particularly if he is your most capable scorer. I generally like point guards to be pass first guys, but in the case of a transcendent talent like Pooh, I’m fine with him shooting that much. I’d like to see him cut down on his 3′s (until he is more consistent from downtown), but other than that, unless Chicago imports another proven scorer, the kid has to fire away if the team wants to win games.

  • http://slamonline.Com Bryan Crawford

AllBall, name a better “one man show” in basketball this season than Derrick Rose.
And when DRose has a bad game, am I supposed to kill him for it? When he plays poorly, I acknowledge it. I leave the slaughtering and nitpicking to you guys. I’ve been watching him long enough to know that him having a bad game or two is no cause for concern.

  • Kinetik

    Happy mother’s day pau gasol.

  • WiniTaLL

El_larsen after you name your self a hater your opinion is no longer relevant your just creating chaos tell the laker fans how kobe is done then you will create a lot of it (which he honestly is)

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Chris Paul during the Laker series? Blake Griffin all year for the Clippers?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I said prior to the series, when most everyone else was ready to declare Jeff Teague roadkill, that he was a good player who just needed minutes.
I’ve seen him play huge once or twice in the regular season, and knew he wasn’t lacking game or confidence, just playing time.
Last night’s game was fun for a Bulls fan. It was the type of performance I was expecting from Rose the night of his MVP being awarded, but better late than never.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Of course you would say CP3…
I won’t argue with you on your opinion. If you think that those 2 guys are a better one-man show than DRose, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that you’re wrong.

  • WiniTaLL

@AllBall blake is fun to watch put he is not as good as D rose and he is alot taller making him not as fun to watch because it is much easer for him and all he dose really is dunk which is cool but i only have him as the second funnest guy to watch and chris paul is almost as good as rose but not as fun to watch and this is the greatest one man show wright so the person should be at least a top 5 player which d rose is number 1 in my opinion and he dose crazy stuff like a magician at times and yeah that what makes him AMAZING and why he will be the face of the nba very soon.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

The Lakers are unraveling. Personally, I didn’t care about them one way or the other, but I was kind of hoping for a better ending for Phil Jackson.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Just arguing for arguments sake. For most, Rose would be more watch-able than Paul and Blake.

  • WiniTaLL

    moderators hurry up plz

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I think he’s definitely more watchable that Chris Paul. Who wants to watch a guy that takes no more than 8-12 shots per game? CP3 is good, but not all that exciting to watch anymore. At least not to me.
Blake Griffin definitely gives DRose a run for his money though. The guy was a season long Sportscenter highlight.

  • Myung

Rigo, you’ve seen him play once or twice huge in the regular season? That means you saw the one or two games of real playing time (in the previous 2 seasons) he actually got. Our coaches never gave him any playing time. If you’ve seen Jeff Teague play well, you’re a rarity (and you’re not even a Hawks fan which means you probably don’t watch all our games). I’m not knocking Teague; I’m knocking those in charge of his playing time. I’ve seen probably every game of his career, and I think there was literally one very memorable one (I think it was a Saturday home game vs. Portland where he threw up a sick stat line). Other than that, his best games of his two year career have been last night and Wednesday night.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

@AllBall & BC – I say Rose as well, but I’d throw Dwight Howard’s name out there too.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

@Myung – I don’t remember the date, the opponent, or the reason why he got so much playing time, but I did sit down and watch one Hawks game in particular on LP where Teague looked like a bonafide future all-star, and I watched another game where he played extremely well in limited minutes.
So it was a bit surprising to me when fans and analysts were saying Hinrich going down and Teague having to start was going to hurt the Hawks, I must have happened to watch two rare games for him, I just assumed he always played well.
