Post Up: Rocking and Reeling

DRose is unstoppa-Bull. Mavs level Lakers.

Chicago 99, Atlanta 82

Critics like to call the Chicago Bulls a “one man show.” But when that one man show is clicking like it was yesterday, it’s the best show in the NBA.

DRose hung an MVP-like 44 points (a career high) on the Atlanta Hawks last night on 16-27 shooting from the field and 4-7 from behind the three-point line. He also had 5 rebounds, 7 assists and only committed 2 turnovers. In a word, he was unstoppa-Bull. He carried the entire team on his back as the other four starters combined to score just 21 points(!).

Rose did get some help offensively from the Bench Mob (Taj Gibson had 13 points and 11 rebounds and Kyle Korver had 11 points on 3-4 shooting from beyond the arc), but it was his performance that captivated everyone and seemed to have the Atlanta Hawks shook.

ATL did get a solid Game 3 from Josh Smith (17 points and 13 rebounds) who had been missing in the previous two games, and also got another outstanding performance from young Jeff Teague who seems to be resigning the injured Kirk Hinrich to coming off the bench next year (it won’t be the first time) with each and every game. Teague had yet another 20-point outing and committed just his second turnover in the entire series. His play has been a pleasant surprise to everyone, especially Hawks fans.

But, outside of the tremendous play of JSmoove and Teague, Atlanta didn’t get much contribution anywhere else. “Iso” Joe Johnson, Al Horford and Marvin Williams scored just 10 points apiece and Jamal Crawford only managed 7 points off the bench. In a game where you thought all of these guys would be fired up to play at home and ready to send a strong message to the Bulls by going up 2-1 in the series, they came out flat and were forced to sit back and watch the Derrick Rose show like everyone else.

Game 4 now becomes a must-win for the Atlanta. If they don’t come out and play with better energy and focus on Sunday, the next time the Hawks come back to the “A,” it could very well be to start their summer vacations. — Bryan Crawford / @_BryanCrawford

L.A. Lakers 92, Dallas 98

RBX said it best on “High Powered” from Dr. Dre’s classic LP, The Chronic: “I drop bombs like Hiroshima.”

The Dallas Mavericks dropped bombs on the Los Angeles Lakers Friday night and when the dust settled, they come away with a 98-92 victory to go up 3-0 in the series.

The Lakers are leveled. The Lakers are shook. The Lakers are literally on the ropes. Now it’s up to Phil Jackson and Kobe Bryant—who continued to be defiant and delusional in the post-game presser about his team’s comeback chances—to dig through the rubble to find the team’s collective basketball soul.

And Pau Gasol. For the third straight game, Gasol was MIA for L.A., finishing with a paltry 12 points and 8 rebounds. The Spaniard was at times lifeless, listless and completely owned by Dirk Nowitzki, who finished with a game-high 32 points and 9 rebounds.

This was a very winnable game for the Lakers. They were up in the fourth, but let the home team close the game on a 20-7 run. Nowitzki and Jason Terry each had seven points in the rally.

“It’s great we just didn’t panic early when they were going inside all night,” said Nowitzki. “They were up there eight in the fourth quarter and we stuck with it. We said in the huddle that we keep fighting, keep plugging away and finally got some stops and got some shots to fall on the offensive end and that was big.”

The biggest gaffe for the visitors, though, was when Derek Fisher, usually poised under pressure, fouled Terry in the waning seconds of the game when it was still just a one-possession game. Jet stepped to the charity stripe and iced both freebies to go up 95-91 and it was curtains from there.

This game defied logic in that L.A. dominated points in the paint with Andrew Bynum leading the way with a team-high 21 points and 20 rebounds. Bryant was flat, Fisher was un-clutch and Gasol was Ralph Ellison’s Invisible Man.

“It’s tough,” said Bynum. “We played hard and we just gave it away at the end. We were up 7 with 8 minutes to go and let them hit two threes. Come down and we didn’t do anything offensively. They say 3 and out in baseball, we have about 5 and out. It’s tough.”

Laker Nation will be furious, they will be speechless, they will be inconsolable, but most of all, they will demand change if Dallas completes the sweep of the defending champs on Mother’s Day.

“We’re probably shocked a little bit,” said Lamar Odom. “Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand how we find ourselves in a game like that and we don’t know how to use each other’s strengths. We’ve been through it so many times, but we’re so stubborn with each other and it caught up to us. We need to find a way to close out a game.”

Change is the operative word for the Mavs, too, as they have finally changed their mindset as a team and exorcized their Playoff demons of 2006. Even if by some grand miracle they let the Lakers steal a game or two, they have proved that they are more than just regular-season stalwarts. They proved that they can compete in the NBA’s second season with the best of them, even the defending champs.

“It’s not just Dirk and Jason,” said coach Rick Carlisle. “Everybody is focused. We’re all trying to do something that we have never done, so the focus, the determination, the discipline, and all those things, is crucial. Dirk is one of the all-time greats, there’s no doubt about that, but we’re going for the ring and that’s one thing he hasn’t done in his career, and he’s one step closer, but we have a long way to go. And getting one more game from Los Angeles is going to be a lot of hard work and we’re going to have to stay humble and stay hungry.”

Dallas is slaying the Giant right before our eyes and it’s sending a cataclysmic jolt through all of basketball. The Mavs are for real, people, it’s time you started believing it. –Maurice Bobb

Meh, on Dwight. When he’s beasting like he did against Atlanta when he had 40+, I say yes. But how often did that happen this season?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Def gotta agree with BC, good write-up btw, but Drose is the best ‘one man show’ in the league. Everything he does is spectacular, his lay-ups are crazy, HIS LAY-UPS, his crossover, his dunks, he has an insane touch on his floaters, this dude is spectacular.

  • Vince5

If the Mavs continue to play like this, they might even beat the Bulls or the Heat.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Pretty funny how everyone agreed (including me)that 27 shots is porbably a little too much and that he drops 44 on exactly that number of shots. What’s even more awesome was the fast he was actually smiling a couple of times. I just knew the first time he flashed a smile the Hawks were f*cked.

  • Myung

haha, well that’s awesome then. You have literally seen more Hawks games when Teague played well than many Hawks fans. If you blinked, you missed those couple of games.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

    *probably, *then, *fact

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Yeah, but how often did Rose drop 40+ in the regular season?
For pure entertainment’s sake, I think no one is better than Rose. The speed, the sick crossovers, the crazy floaters, the dunks, all those circus shots he makes, how he’s able to get to the rim regardless of who and how many try to stop him, and his finishing ability.
But Howard was beasting on the regular too though. Toss in the fact that few others, if any, play as well as he does at that position nowadays and it’s must see tv.

  • http://www.angryarab.com Tariq

    Myung:
    Barkley and Malone > Kidd.
    The rest, not so much.

  • http://slamonline t dubb

First off the lakers are done and this is coming from a diehard laker fan pau has played like garbage the whole series but if any team can tie this series up its the lakers i just dont think they are going to do it.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Myung, I hit up basketball-reference to try and find the particular game. It was indeed against Portland.
He had 24 points, and 5 steals and 3 blocks (damn).
But more than stats, I remember thinking I loved his confidence. He just acted like he belonged out there.
Had no idea I was watching an anomaly. Lol

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

DRose doesn’t NEED to drop 40 to still have a jaw-dropping game. Dwight did, at least for me. I like Dwight, I’m just not as high on him as a lot of other people are. As skilled big-men go (which I tend to like), he leaves a lot to be desired.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@BC, exactly, Drose can have a 7-20 game and he’ll have you talking about how pretty those 7 shots were.

  • el_larsen

    just seen the mavs game.
the real mvp is german ,looks an nhl guy,and is called dirk.big shot after big shot against the champs.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

I know your feelings on Dwight, B.
And I agree on Rose being the BEST “one-man show”.
For me, personally, I’m throwing Blake and Dwight second and third on that list.
Also, if you ain’t read your DMs yet…probably for the best.
@Jahmai – I’d argue if he had a 7-20 game, you’d be talking about how pretty some of the misses were too! How many times he made you jump out of your seat after a MISSED shot? I done that plenty.

  • izzo

Spare a thought for Ron Artest’s therapist.
And the best one man show this season was clearly Kevin Love.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

And AllBall, CP ain’t that fun to watch most of the time these days.
While many applaud him for his “efficiency”, I find it maddening that he’ll only take 6, 7 shots all game. Even when his team needs more from him.

  • ThaWindy

Bulls played great D all game. Rose scored 44 because the Hawks have no Defense. Bulls made adjustments on Teague and that’s what slowed him down in the 2nd half. Bulls took away their confidence AND their crowd. Even though the starting 5 didnt score much, I would say they all had very timely basket that kept them focused on D. I do hate how we can go Korver happy. Think some of those sets should be for Deng, but hey.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Haha, Rigo… I just saw ‘em. You’re good man, no worries. I was Twitter-free all day yesterday.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Rigo, gotta agree with you on the misses, last night he got in the lane and faked Josh Smith with a pretty ‘Dream’ move but he just missed the shot, but that was one of those moments.

  • el_larsen

i know he s hurt but carlos boozer is playing for the bulls.you can’t say that drose is all alone and de’serve to take 30shots per game.
in utah, playing with dwill(i know he s not loved here cos he s more efficient than spectacular)booz average karl malone scoring stats.again maybe because of his injury he can t score that much anymore(or maybe because his point guard shoot too much)
d rose will have to adjust cos against the heat or the c’s(please let me believe!!!!!!)this kind of overshooting will make his team lose(for my extreme delight sorry)

  • http://slamonline t dubb

Whats funny is in the start of the season some guy on here was saying d rose wasnt as good as d wade on his best day SUPRISE! This kid is the truth he is poised to move in kobe spot as that guy in the league lebron didnt want it and he s not a closer d wade is a great player but having lebron in Mia is gonna hurt his legacy more than he knows and plus i think his skills as a player are probably maxed out as far as their gonna go D rose is only 22 and he is already equal to Kobe Lebron and Dwade anybody who thinks different is effin insane if this guy continues to Improve on his already deadly skillset its a wrap and this is coming from Kobe supporter.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

Drose had 44 points with 5:30 left in the ballgame, I actually thought he was gonna get 50.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Is it just me, or are “away” games for Bulls really semi-home games this postseason?
I expected the huge Bulls following in Indy on account of the proximity.
And I wasn’t surprised at all the love they got at road arenas during the regular season.
But in the playoffs? Against Atlanta?
Half the crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Hawks”, the other half “MVP”.
Then again, it IS Atlanta. I wouldn’t expect to see that against Miami or Boston.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

el_larsen, who is obviously a Utah resident and Jazz fan, still hasn’t gotten over the Bulls beating the Jazz on 2 consecutive Finals, haha. I can respect that tho. I still hate the Pistons.

  • el_larsen

    @t dubb.it doesn’t surprise me that you re a kobe fan!!chunkers
not a heat fan but d wade has won a ring byhimself, how can you put rose ahead?
i m on the blake griffin side.this guy could turn the dt sterling clippers into winners!!!with a coach named vinny del negro!
and what if next year john wall rise and become more speedy gonzales style than rose?wait and see

  • el_larsen

looooooool ,someone think i m jazz fan!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Well, if you’re not, you’re just an irrational DRose/Bulls hater, el_larsen.

  • Angel of Stern

    PEJA’S BACK !!!!

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

NOBODY could turn ANY team into winners with a coach named Vinny Del Negro.
    Sorry.
And a Clippers fan in Utah? What is up with people not backing their home squads these days?
Unless you’re originally from LA, in which case, disregard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@Rigo, didn’t you catch the 2nd Atlanta road game for the Bulls when they absolutely blew the Hawks out and Drose was 6-8 from 3? It looked like everyone in the crowd was a Bulls/Drose fan. Besides Atlanta is known for it’s crappy crowds. But Bulls fan are really everywhere though, even in Miami there were some MVP chants. Maybe we can hear some more of those in the next round. :P

  • ThaWindy

Rose taking 27 shot did not hurt the Bulls offensive chemistry. He didnt force his shot but took what the D gave him. More shots going toward the basket. He studied film and knew where his shot was going to be. It doesnt matter who they are play Rose is going to kill them.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Oh, el_larsen is a Clippers fan?! That explains everything.

  • bashmo

WOW i come here to see people still trying to claim DRose as the to playoff performer? WTF after 1 incredible performance, you forget about the previous 7? Comeon, he is now shooting over 40 percent, but is still no where near performing at the level of Dirk, or Durant. HE is not playing CONSISTENTLY enough at all, im just opening people’s eyes. Chill out on the DRose praise in the playoffs, this performance did NOT make up for the other terrible shooting and turnover games.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Derrick Rose.
    LONG… LIVE… THE PRINCE!

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Oh, as far as Rose’s alleged “gunning”, that team needs him to do what he does. That team is built in Rose’s image. If he doesn’t do what he does, then they are a shell of what we see.
No one carries his team like Rose does this year.
    Nobody.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

    @Philo – D Rose: “Pocket King”? Lol
@bashmo – How many losses in those previous 7 games? Two?
I’ll take it. Turnovers, bad shooting percentage and all that.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Jahmai

@bashmo, are you kidding, in game 1 of the pacers series he was epic! Closer. In game 2 he was very good, game 3 he shot poorly but hit the game winner, and in game 5 he was good too. So wtf are you talking about?

  • el_larsen

    lol guys!
taking boozer and d will as examples don’t make me a jazz fan!i m talking bout boozer and his previous team was …utah that s it!
my favorite player is eric gordon so i watch all clippers game,so i ve seen the whole blake griffin show rise.and i m sorry i liked it,and i wonder where will he stop.
i live in france so i can t support any HOMEsquad!
i had to pick one.i choose the family one the DETROIT PISTONS.(so yes bryan i m an irrational drose:bulls hater)i must admit that i also like the c’s (so yes i m also a kobe laker hater)

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    As for Gasol, I’ll attempt to offer this thesis;
The past few years have been a grind for Gasol. He has been playing uber level Playoff basketball for the last few seasons. He is gassed, and is running on fumes.
For a guy like him, who appears to not be used to this kind of grind, they tend to eventually wither. It happens to the best of the “sidekicks”. For a guy like Bryant, he has been playing 100+ games for the better part of his career. He is used to the grind. It’s happened to Scottie. The difference is though, Michael was able to convey his will power over to the rest of the team.
Kobe has not done that this year. Last season he was a better leader.
When Gasol is on, he is still the best big man in the world.
    In my opinion.

  • el_larsen

    bashmo is right!
drose has played against the pacers and the hawks,2 poor defensive teams, and despite help from the refs ,he hasn’t been that good.not “mvp” good.
cmon look at that guy in dallas!
put cp3 with deng noah and boozer and you bulls would win easily(and without paul taking 30shots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Ah, I mistook your “here” to mean Utah when you meant SLAM online.
    Pistons fan.
    Even worse! Ha!

  • Myung

“But in the playoffs? Against Atlanta?
Half the crowd was chanting “Let’s Go Hawks”, the other half “MVP”. Then again, it IS Atlanta.” Exactly, Rigo. It IS Atlanta. Our city is a transplant haven. Lots of businesses headquartered here (Coke, Delta, Home Depot, Chick fil A, just to name 4), plus people move here because of the weather and because it’s just a great place to live. I can’t complain about transplants or I never would’ve met my wife (from Texas). This is our reality in this city. We know half the people we meet aren’t native Georgians. Which means half the sports fans here hold onto their original loyalties (can’t blame them either). It’s not just Bulls games. Steelers. Bears. Mets. Cubs. Bulls. Knicks. Lakers. Celtics. It’s like that in every city to some degree because some teams have national followings. But in Atlanta, it’s extra bad. You throw on top of that the fact that the Hawks were TERRIBLE from 1999 to 2007 (meaning most of the non-transplants turned on them) and you have the makings of a ridiculously bad home crowd. We have a home court advantage vs. teams without national followings (Ex. ORL, OKC, MEM). But against Chicago? I knew it would be the way it was last night. Like someone mentioned up there, if you saw any of our games vs. the big draws (CHI, NYK, LAL, BOS), the visiting team felt right at home. I went to Playoff games when we played MJ in 1997 and the Knicks in 1999. It was bad back then for the home team… but now it’s even worse. We just have a terrible home crowd. Just another reason why it sucks being a Hawks fan.

  • http://slamonline.com zoom

Kobe, when he’s going off, is still much better basketball to watch than DRose. Mind you, there exists no bigger Kobe hater on the planet than me. Lebron is better to watch when he’s going off. Blake is definitely a better one man show too. That’s real talk, no hate. DRose without a doubt is fun to watch, but he’s not the best one man show in the league.

  • ThaWindy

    @Phil:
LOL… that’s funny until Rose gets a ring before the THE KING.
    @bashmo:
Its ok.. Rose had some amazing rookie playoff games too. Its only his 3rd year in the L. Its the beginning. So the turnovers and shooting struggles I can live with. And in this game he seemed to fix those struggles. Relax, you’ll WITNESS more.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

I could care less about DRose’s individual performances. As long as the Bulls keep winning, that’s all that matters to me. Individual performance arguments are better suited for the regular season and not the Playoffs. Chris Paul anyone?

  • el_larsen

    @rigo
lol it s ok no pb

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @ThaWindy:
You know how I roll. The King doesn’t ever have to win a ring.
He’ll still be The King, though…

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

“Just Another Reason Why it Sucks Being a Hawks Fan” also happens to be the title of Lang Whitaker’s upcoming book. LOL
In all seriousness though, I feel ya, Myung.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

Zoom, who calls the Lakers a one man show? Miami? Nobody, right? That’s what I meant. If you like Blake Griffin, I won’t argue you down on that one. I like to watch him too.

  • ThaWindy

I think any team should boo a player if he’s playing like shi*. We boo Boozer. He deserves it and should take it as love. Josh Smith deserves to be boo’d for continuing to KILL his team by missing wide open jumpers.
Note to Smith: Theres a reason why your open.
