Post Up: Start the Show

Heat jump out to 1-0 lead vs. Boston; Grizzlies roll over Thunder.

Memphis 114, Oklahoma City 101

Memphis thoroughly deserved this win, clearly riding the wave that was their first round demolition of San Antonio from just two days earlier. The Grizz amped a 4-point first quarter lead up to 16 in nine second quarter minutes behind Zach Randolph and four reserves, and were essentially never threatened thereafter.

Randolph is fast becoming the defining player of this meteoric Memphis rise, and he was simply unguardable against a usually-formidable Thunder frontline. His 34 points on 22 shots, impeccable touch at the line and 10 boards set the tone not only for the opener, but perhaps the series. His presence allowed Marc Gasol ample room to operate, and he responded with 20 and 13 on 9-11 shooting. He simply had his way for a Grizzlies team that was, frankly, more desperate. Mike Conley had 38 turnover-less minutes, Memphis had five players in double-figures, and they scored 114 points against a defense that had held the League’s highest scoring squad (Denver) below its average in all five contests.

Kevin Durant led OKC with 33 and 11 boards, while Russell Westbrook delivered the classic Westbrook mixed bag: 29 points, 8 boards and 6 assists, but with 7 turnovers (equaling Memphis’ entire total) and 14 missed shots. He and Durant were ravenous offensively, getting to the line and showing typical aggression, but they had little help. The Thunder’s bench was minus 11, and for the first time in the Playoffs OKC was out-rebounded.

For Game 2, Oklahoma City will need to match the desperation of a Memphis team who genuinely considers this upset talk to be utter nonsense. —Todd Spehr

Miami 99, Boston 90

The first punch of this series went to Miami—both literally and figuratively. There was no bigger force behind the blow than Dwyane Wade whose 38 point effort led Miami to a 99-90 game 1 victory. Wade quickly erased concerns over his troubles against the C’s with a blistering 23-point first half effort on 9-of-11 shooting. Wade did his damage on tough drives, jumpers and one lowered shoulder into the chest of Paul Pierce.

The blow to Pierce highlighted the bad blood that’s certain to boil over again between these teams. For Pierce, the whistle was his second tech within a minute of play. Both of which resulted in Boston paying the price for reacting to overly aggressive and instigating play by Miami.

While the Pierce incidents made for intriguing theatre, it wasn’t a deciding factor in the outcome. Miami simply outplayed Boston on both sides of the ball. They were the aggressor and had Boston playing on their heels most of the game. The Heat defense was superb and kept Boston from getting into any sort of rhythm in the halfcourt.  Rondo, the engine for Boston, had an uneventful game notching 8 points, 7 assists and 5 turnovers. Ray Allen’s 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting made it interesting but as the only cog in their Fantastic Four that was clicking, it wasn’t enough to get Boston over the hump.

On the other end Wade had plenty of help as Bron Bron went for 22 points, 6 boards, 5 dimes, 2 steals and 2 blocks. James Jones came up huge for Miami with 25 points on 5-7 from beyond the arc.

All in all, Miami quickly and aggressively put an end to any momentum Boston had coming into their series. Only time will tell if Boston can return the favor. With no love lost between these two, this one’s quickly shaping up to be quite the slugfest. —Jonathan Evans (@jre18)

My 2nd favorite viewing subplot in the Memphis takedown was Russell’s temper tantrums (or does he have tourettes and it hasn’t been disclosed?).
Every foul call against him or with him in the vicinity of the play was accompanied by arm waves ,air punches and general sh*t facedness. It actually became comical late in the game.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Most amusing was the height difference between TA and the guy he was chasing around: KD. Looked like a Cheetah chasing a Giraffe around the plains.
And Rony actually defended the young guy WELL.
Great to see Allen having his springs back. Very exciting defender.

  • http://www.nba.com Gman

@byebye thats weak. Did you see the Heat teams since 06? not to mention there was a whole season of injury for Wade. There second best player was who? J.O or Beasley on given nights.

  • T-Money

E: noticed how ira started his mailbag with a question bashing bron and rio? the questions he picks are far more telling than his nondescript answers.

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

He’s a Finals MVP already, hard to use playoff performance as a knock against him. Lebron’s Cavs teams weren’t as bad as Wade’s Heat teams in recent years. When he went down with injury in 07-08 they did just as bad as the Cavaliers have done this season without Lebron.

your right slam, I didn’t want my comments to show up today.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I posted that out of frustration a half hour ago.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

nbk is being blackballed by SlamOnline.
Great game in the second half, should be a great series. It wasn’t one of those games where Wade or Jones were doing things they are not capable of doing. If you give Dwyane easy-ish jumpers and drives he will torch you. You LET James Jones shoot 3′s and he will make a high %.
Miami were the better team last night.
Pierce should not have got ejected, although I don’t think they were winning that game with or with out him.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    Told you, T-Money. Vendetta’s are a bit*h.

  • http://slamonline.com tealish

    Thoughts:
    - Wade played well; LeBron played the deferring role well.
    - Terrible ejection on Pierce. Just terrible.
    - ZBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

one last time, the Thunder are never going to win if Westbrook leads the teams in shots, and has more turnovers then assists. — and the Boston v Miami series is gonna suck if Rondo doesn’t win his matchup wth Bibby/Chalmers very handily. Paul Pierce is going to have a horrible offensive series, KG can’t offensively dominate a series anymore, and Ray Allen isn’t a consecutive possession type of scorer.

  • T-Money

james harden needs to be JET for OKC. he disappears far too often.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Its a lot quieter than I thought it would be today.

  • Thawindy

Talk about everything coming together at the right time. 1-10 Grizz look so strong. Cant wait to see the adjustments for game 2.

  • JTaylor21

    Slam sucks!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

James Jones flop was so ghey.

  • JTaylor21

Okay, that was a test run. Why isn’t my long, thought out comments showing up?

  • T-Money

throwing it out there: what’s the difference between what zaza did to j-rich and what pp did to james jones? on that precedent, he could have been ejected right there too.

  • T-Money

    allball: heat won.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Taylor I had a long comment i submitted like 5 times, it told me I was duplicating my comments but I was giving like 10 minutes inbetween posts, none of them showed up. — I switched to my computer at work and everything’s back to normal except TPU is like a ghost town.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

@t-money: looked like zaza forcefully head-butted j-rich. pierce just got in jones’s face, and jones flopped, making it look like a head-butt at first.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I can only assume that every guy in the league that flops is ghey, eh Allball? There’s a lot of good ballplayers that incorporate that in their game…..and there’s a little something called “gamesmenship” that comes into play here. *continuing away from my Allball question* The Heat have been dealing with hostility since JULY. From the media, opposing fans and more importantly, opposing teams. This little fracas bullsh*t isn’t going to bother them and no hostile crowd is going to fu*k with them either. They’ve dealt with it 44 times this season. No other team in the league dealt with aggression towards them. You’re barking up the wrong tree if you think some angry fans are going to make a difference to how they play when they get to Boston.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Bibby played great defense on Rondo early, I just think that should be mentioned.
And, did anybody else think it looked like an open field tackle when Rondo hit LeBron early on that breakaway dunk, only Bron carried him like Marshawn Lynch did to Saints defenders last year.
Ray Allen is cooking, Wade still loses him too much.
Bosh is going to struggle, unless that jumper starts dropping quickly. He can’t outquick KG at all. However, he will eat up all the other bigs on Boston.
Jeff Green for Kendrick Perkins was a horrible trade. I think this is perfectly clear now. I don’t care who wins the series, what Boston lost by dumping Perkins for Green is amazing.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Rondo didn’t even make a play on the ball, to be honest. He wrapped LeBron up a good four feet from the basket in a bear hug. Of course, since Bron is huge, it didn’t really phase him, but I thought it was interesting how that was basically a non-issue with the refs.
I didn’t think Pierce deserved to get tossed, but that head butt was stupid. That is what put him at the mercy of the refs if they gave him another tech. Now, you could argue that he got fouled hard, but the Celtics were fouling the Heat hard as well. You can’t go crazy over every hard foul.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Does that mean that Jones flop was not ghey? Or is that why TPU is quiet? I’ll agree with you on the latter.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

That Rondo play and the Jermaine O’neal foul are why I don’t understand any of what Paul Pierce did, or Doc Rivers said yesterday, the Celtics were clearly trying to be the bully. — And I agree that Wade loses Allen too much, but its not gonna change the series, just maybe a game or two. Also, I didn’t think so at first and don’t fully by into it, but i’m starting to see why so many people absolutely opposed that Perkins for Green trade.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Eboy, Jones flop was ghey because the way that game was going I expected him to come back with a hit of his own, or take the hit. Instead he hit the floor like a soccer player.

  • http://pickandroll.tumblr.com/ airs

i wonder, say the Heat win the title this year.
do you guys think that will be redemption enough to kind of put out the flames the media caused because of how much adversity they’ve had to go through this year? cuz to be honest, im over all that concert/Decision BS.
or do you think it’ll just pile on to the hate.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Wade lost Allen too much, but he was the best player on the floor last night. Bosh was AWOL, and Bron was below average (by his standards).

  • JTaylor21

Word to AllenP. I never understood what Ainge saw in Green to trade the L’s top defender for him. He’s not big enough or a good rebounder to be a 4 nor does he have the handles, shot or quickness to be a good 3. He’s basically one of those tweeners who got drafted way too high because of so-called potential that isn’t really there.
Bos is going to regret this decision down the road if they aren’t already regretting it.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

When did Jones go down on the “headbutt”? He just stood there after his fanciful head snap back. You guys love to make sh*t up.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Eboy, I am talking about the Jermaine O’neal hit. Where did we get mixed up?

  • T-Money

lights out: neither head shots hurt the opponent. nahmean? / lebron eyes lit up everytime jeff green goes on him. he doesn’t even try to fake him out, he just first steps him or shoots in his face. / imagine if bron had been tossed and then brushed off media availability? lol

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

    Eboy
I was confused too, because I didn’t remember dude falling on the play I saw.
Green can play the three. He can be a good three actually, possibly a fringe all-star. But, he can’t play the four. He doesn’t have the right mindset.
Boston used to have the best defensive big tandem in the league. Each of their bigs could help and recover, defend the rim and play solid on ball post defense. Now, they are hoping the two O’Neals can do that, and depending on KG for too much. It is sad in a way.
But, to change the subject, would you rather have Gasol/Bynum or Gasol/Randolph?
That’s actually a legit question right now, which means Chris Wallace can basically tell the entire sporting world to lick his balls. Slowly. Lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I’m sorry but the Celtics have Glenn Davis. If anyone is flopping in this series its him, there is what 2 guys in the league that can knock him down, but he leads the league in charges….. If i was James Jones I would have started brawling with Paul Pierce to get him suspended for the series. but who cares, he won the confrontation and the game, while doing a reggie miller impression.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

the Jermaine O’neal hit, you wouldn’t have gotten knocked over by that? was he supposed to see it coming?

  • feez22

    ZBOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I don’t even think James “flopped” on the “headbutt”. He just let Pierce face brush his face away, the smart play in my opinion. No need to get into it with him there. Like I said, James actual flop (when O’neal hit him) was ghey. Very ghey. The Pierce incident I have no problem with.

  • http://www.pablasso.com pablasso

E got mixed up between wade and brons boxers… He can’t help it Allball.. Happens when your up a teams a$$ so hard

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

Yeah, the reason why Jermaine got a tech there was because it seemed like Boston was trying to punk James Jones because he was hitting shots. Yeah, Jones flopped, but that’s not unusual for a shooter moving through the paint who gets hit. Manu, Ray and and the rest do the same thing.
But, it felt like, at least to me, that Boston hit Jones to rattle him. It wasn’t a hard elbow, but it was an elbow.
I think Boston just seemed a little surprised at the intensity. I don’t expect that problem next game, although if Rondo plays poorly they will still struggle.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    LOL. “Fanciful head snap back”.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Gasol and Randolph are playing better than ANYONE’s frontcourt. They’re not going to be afraid of a potential matchup with Bynum and Pau….but they still have a lot of work to do to get there and the Lakers are going to have to work hard to get past the Mavs. But that matchup would be crazy if it happened.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I feel like the conference finals is taking place in both conferences, this round.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Never, EVER thought I’d say this, but Randolph is playing better than any other PF in the playoffs.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

LOL, I just found the James Jones play on LP again. He saw it coming, he could have braced him self and took the hit, like Pierce did when Wade tried to run through him. Jermaine did not not connect fully, Jones could have stayed up no doubt.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Allen, just read your comment. Yes, I think they were trying to rattle him. In that game, the way it was going, I am surprised Jones did not try to take the hit.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Gamesmenship, people, gamesmenship. Derick Fisher has been doing this for a decade and he has HOW MANY rings? Manu Ginobli? If James Jones is contributing by osmosis, I’ll fu*king take it how it comes.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

nbk, with the Grizz and Thunder right?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

haha sure Grizz and Thunder. — but no not really. LA v Dal and Bos V Mia, the rest is tv ratings and obligations IMO. Although Chicago and OKC have a legitimate shot, I just wouldn’t put money on them.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I’m backing the Grizzlies. They have multiple wing players who can guard, and all the size needed.
