Report: Cavaliers Offered No. 4 Pick For Rudy Gay

There’s not much more than a tweet, but word has surfaced that the Memphis Grizzlies rejected the Cavaliers’ offer of the fourth pick for swingman Rudy Gay. From DraftExpress: “Heard Cleveland offered Memphis their #4 pick in exchange for Rudy Gay (w/help of their trade exception). Memphis rejected.”

    to think they even offered..jeeesh.

Wouldn’t be a bad offer if the talent pool was deeper. With the way all the draft experts are slamming the draft this year, Memphis should have been offered the #1 and the #4 for Gay. On a side note, I wonder if Rudy is a Gay Rights activist. Does he believe that Gays should marry? Should Gays be able to share work-benefit health care? So many stupid questions, so little time.

If it was the FIRST pick it would have at least been a somewhat (not really) decent offer. But 4th pick? Memphis probably spent 0.0001 seconds coming up with an answer.

To all those that said, Rudy was safe and was not expendable considering how well the team did without him. Just like Slick Riles said, “We want to build around Mike Beasley and Dwade.”

  • JTaylor21

Just imagine how good Memphis would have been with him in the lineup instead of Sam Young?

Besides financial reasons, I don’t see why they would even think about trading Rudy… Memphis is 2 deep at every position (a little light at the PG spot) except the small forward spot, which is perfectly fine since they have Rudy Gay who just happens to be their second best player.

  • RoytheBoy

Would’ve been a bad move for both teams. Cavs don’t need a veteran.

at least make the offer worth it. rudy gay straight up for anyone in this draft would be stupid.

Memphis would be dumb to make that trade. The only way to make money in the NBA is spend money. Even if you draft awesome, you will have to spend money eventually to really win.

It’s called negotiating. You never offer your best in the initial proposal.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

Oh I get it. I think the Cavs wanted to see if they could pull a “Pau Gasol” type trade LOL.

@niQ, but then they realize that neither Mark Price nor Hot Rod Williams is the Grizz GM. Can’t blame ‘em for trying.

  • Migs

Come on Colangelo, offer up Bargnani + TE for that 4th..

  • Yesse

    Really, Dan Gilbert? Really?

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Just playing devil’s advocate, but this could’ve been a good way to dump some salary for a team that’s overpaying players left and right.
They won’t get anyone as good as Gay with the 4th pick in this draft, but it would be instant cap relief.

  • John

If they keeping Gasol, they would prob try to sign and trade OJ to a team for a pick because Memphis can’t afford to keep him. It would at least get a younger player at a cheaper rookie contract, pending the lockout.

Rudy Gay would have been the 1st pick in this draft…… when he left college. Let alone now, while he’s a proven 20PPG guy, you want to trade a pick for a fringe STARTER for Rudy Gay a fringe ALL STAR lol Dan Gilbert flexing his brain again.

dma, This isn’t negotiating. Walking into a Mercedes dealership and offering a bag of Cheetos for a new C Class isn’t negotiating.

  • matt

@ Migs – TPE can’t be used like that, but yeah. maybe Bargnani + James Johnson for Gay.

  • http://dsjkflf.com Jukai

Rudy gay for the first and fourth draft pick I’d do. This draft sucks.

I truly believe if Rudy Gay was playing in the playoffs the Griz would have beat the thunder!

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

The Griz played well without Rudy and they’ll need the cap space if they want to re-sign Gasol. Plus, as good as he is, it’s still a bad contrat. So not a bad idea for the Cavs to try. I think Gay will be gone, they are just looking for a better offer.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

    Who is TPE?

  • http://myspace.com/gametimeweezy Gametimeweezy

I’d entertain the idea they probably are going to lose him anyways. A #4 draft pick does have value even in a weak draft.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

The thing about this years draft, and I’ve mentioned this before in other circles/threads is that to ‘succeed’ in this draft, your going to have to concentrate on taking a player based on NEED. No one is going to jump out as a star from this years draft. If you can find a blue-collar player with high basketball IQ and someone who’ll fit right into a position your team lacks, thats going to be the best any of the teams could manage through this crop of rookies.

  • Tyrant56

Considering how well they did without him simply means they can go further with him and you act like Randolph is 22, this will be his 11th year so he ain’t gonna be producing forever.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Cosign Dacre. Do you think the Cavs should take Derrick Williams then given their utter lack of a wing man?

  • http://slamonline.com Waylonakolipse

Rudy Gay is overated. In the long run they’d be better off with Kanter or Singleton at the 4th pick. Probably Kanter, pair him with Verajao and that’d be a decent post.

  • matt

@Tyrant56 – um yeah, they need to save some $ as Marc will get his $$$. Also, @ Teddy-the-Bear – TPE is the trade(d) player exception. Cleveland still has their full 14.5 Million TPE from the LBJ s+traded while raps have about 9.1 million left. (Some of it was used to make some raps trades work this year).

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I think Derrick Williams would be a great pick for the Cavs.
Is Kyrie Irving’s injury going to be an ongoing issue??? Who’s to say….BUT Derrick Williams is ready to go.

    sorry for late reply.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I’d go Williams and Knight if he is still on the board at number 4.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

cleveland still have two picks in the 2nd round 34 and 54 to get some solid big bodies to run through training camp.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

No worries Dacre, and I agree that DWill is gonna fit better for the Cavs. Only thing is I’d take Enes if he’s there at 4th.

  • L44

Rudy had a really good year going and the team was on a roll…then he got hurt. The team kept doing well, but I don’t know how anyone watching the Grizz-Thunder series can say Memphis didn’t need Rudy. OKC packed the paint and the only outside scorer Memphis had was Mayo. If Rudy Gay is there, the Grizzlies would’ve had an outside threat who can get his own shot…not to mention a bigger defender to guard Durant.

  • RonRon

Man that was cheap. The 4th pick in a shallow draft for a developing player for Gay? Cavs FO is mucho crazy.

  • forbrace

There is NO WAY Memphis would trade Rudy Gay. I can not beleive the Cavs had the nurtz to even offer the deal.
