Zach Randolph: ‘There Are Expectations Now’

The season has come to an end for ZBo and the Memphis Grizzlies, but from now on, no one will make the error of overlooking their squad. From the Commercial Appeal: “We hurt,’ Griz forward Zach Randolph said, ‘but we just have to build on this and understand that we can play with anybody.’ Indeed … ‘I’m very proud of my team and our organization,’ Griz coach Lionel Hollins said. ‘I am proud of where we have come from, where we are now and where we are trying to go in the future. Even as disappointing and hard as this loss is, we had a heck of a run and we are looking forward to next year.’ … ‘It’s tough to end our season like this,’ Griz reserve forward Darrell Arthur said. ‘But who would have thought Memphis would be one game away from the West finals?’ Griz guard Tony Allen proclaimed the disappointment to be a stepping stone. ‘I mean, look at the Oklahoma City Thunder,’ Allen said. ‘Last year they lost to the champs (Los Angeles Lakers) and now they’re playing for the Western Conference Finals. We can just use them as an example as we move forward next year.’ And what is there not to believe given this postseason run? The Griz had never even won a playoff game in 12 tries before this year. ‘There are expectations now,’ Randolph said. ‘People are going to expect us to be better. People will look at us as one of the top teams.’”

Great talk about Tony Allen, moving forward & go ahead !

  • Mike From Spain

I really like this Grizzlies squad, what do you think is their weak spot?

  • r2j

Mike fron Spain. I’m not sure if they even got a weak spot. Rudy Gay is the only is the only thing you would worry about.

  • IndyB

They are relatively weak at the point guard spot. Mike Conley will get outplayed by at least half of the leagues starting 1′s. They could also probably use some more depth up front.

Fantastic season. If I were in Memphis, I’d be ecstatic at what they accomplished.

  • All Day

The Grizzlies will not be sneaking up on anyone next year…this year they were the hunters…next year they will be the hunted…it will be interesting to see how well they play with a bullseye on their back.

  • axel

They need a good 3 point shooter off the bench and a better point guard to win the championship

I actually like Conley, I think he earned his paycheck since the All-Star break until now. Darrel Arthur is a solid backup to the bigs, and they still don’t have Gay back. They will possibly ruin the chemistry when he does, but let’s wait and see what happens with that. All they need is someone to back up Conley at the point, someone who can shoot, and they should be a legit Western Conference team for a few years running.

@KoBynum716, totally agree. There were a couple plays where Vasquez just made really dumb choices and excuted very poorly. Conley can’t play every minute so if Mayo could improve as a PG or they get someone really solid in, they’d be in there. Vasquez should not have played all those minutes in the first half, the gavw awya like 6 points.

If the Grizz trade Gay, they’re a Z-Bo ankle sprain away from the lottery. Just sayin’.

  • dsleepy

@MikeC. – if they trade rudy, i’m assuming they’d get something of value in return as well. Plus, I think Marc Gasol will have a breakout year next season, whenever it is.

Not sure it’d be wise to trade Rudy. They’re deep at every spot now, with three legitimate All-Stars in Randolph, Gay, and potentially Marc. And then add in OJ Mayo (who might be an All-Star some day too) and Mike Conley. They’ve got 2 of the best defenders in the league right now in Tony Allen and Shane Battier, as well as a whole stable of bigs.
Grizzlies are looking really solid for next season.

I’d like to see Darrell Arthur get more burn next year. And Leon Powe for sure. And I’m also liking this Haddadi cat–he’s huge and plays with a lot of energy, and seems like a good teammate.

@dsleepy – I’d agree with you if the “Rudy Gay is available” trade rumors weren’t flying fast and furious. Teams know what other teams can realistically afford to spend and how many big money guys they can carry. Memphis isn’t New York, LA or Chicago with deep pockets. I think we’ll see teams lining up with turd sandwich trade proposals that center around an expiring contract, an unproven youngster and a couple 2nd round picks. We won’t see any bigtime talent going back to Memphis for Gay. At best, the Grizz come away with a small-to-medium downgrade in talent, and large payroll savings so they can afford to pay Z-Bo and Conley and extend Gasol.
I remember a time when I used to get excited about NBA trades, now all I can think is “that won’t work under the cap”, and “why trade player X for player Y? Player Y has a longer contract!” Getting out from under Isiah has ruined my ability to throw around trade ideas from just a talent standpoint. I’m fiscally responsible with Dolan’s money nowadays.

I want to see how far the go with Rudy back

  • dma

call me crazy, but this team was a one-hit wonder. see golden state warriors vs dallas mavericks. a team with an extended contract zbo is bad news bears.

  • Hussman25

I dare Slam to do another cover w/ the Grizz like yall did the Nets so many years ago… “Champs by 2015″

  • ai come back

dont hate on conley he did good cept the last game……

  • Ronald

Mike Conley didn’t play too bad. But he had a good amount of boneheaded plays that cost the grizz at least 1 to 2 games.

    LOL @ MikeC.
