2010-2011 NBA Champions: Dallas Mavericks

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Throughout the NBA Finals, the prevailing storyline has been that of the Miami Heat, its superstars, and their inability to come through when the chips were down.

The real story, the one that no one seemed to pay any attention to until late last night, is that the Dallas Mavericks are the best team in all of basketball.

The Mavs walked into Miami’s house, up 3-2, withstood the Heat’s initial surge (led by LeBron James), survived Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki’s early shooting slump, and rode the hot hand of its veterans all the way to a title.

In the end, unless you were a Heat fan, one couldn’t help but be happy for the long journey these guys went through to finally arrive at this triumphant moment.

The Star-Telegram has the quotes:

“Man, this is what I obviously played for the last couple of years,” said Nowitzki, who scored 21 points on 9-of-27 shooting. “I think when you come in this league you want to establish yourself. All these All‑Star Games and all those things are nice, in scoring. But when you get to a certain age you’ve basically seen it all, and all you play for is for that ring.”

“It wasn’t about me carrying the team – I was doing my job,” [Jason] Terry said. “My job is to come in and provide a spark, make plays, make shots. I did my job and I knew if Dirk continued to get the shots he was getting, those were good shots. He wasn’t forcing anything.”

“I’m so happy for him, I’m so happy for Dirk,” Carlisle said. “I’m so happy for the Mavericks’ organization, which is such a class organization, as are the Miami Heat. I don’t think there’s any doubt after this series that Dirk has certainly earned the clout of being one of the all‑time great players. His versatility, how he’s done it in the clutch. He goes 1‑for‑12 in the first half, and then in the second half he was just absolute money.”

“Obviously (the ’06 Finals) was one of my most disappointing losses in my career, to lose the Final series after being up 2‑0,” Nowitzki said. “It took so long just to get here. Just this feeling to be on the best team of the world is just indescribable.”

As the labor situation gets sorted out, there’s no telling when we’ll see NBA basketball again. But even that unfortunate reality can’t take the shine off of what was an incredible NBA season.

Congratulations to the Dallas Mavericks. Here’s to hoping they’ll have a chance to defend their title sooner rather than later.

and thanks to DARKSABER, our Swiss-Singaporean-Whatever for holding it down for Dirk and the Mavs since day one …. and the rearviewmirror can be a bit(h … the 2006 defeat and the first round exits suddenly are no longer shameful and soft but part of the struggle for greatness … as they say, hindsight is 29/20

Congrat’s to Darksaber. If we lived in the same area drinks would be on me. Almost the entire planet was rooting for your team… Unfortunatley cause we wanted to see the Heat lose more so than watching the Heat win. Also and in turn, shout out to Eboy too, for being the only true Heat fan I know on this site… unless the rest of the league wises up and plays zone, you guys’ll probably go 82-0 next year. And my apologies to Jtaylor, it must suck to ride with such a self absorbed and overhyped loser; to respond to the media saying that ‘all my haters have crummy lives and personal problems cause mines isn’t and I don’t have any’ is WILD classless. Last time I checked I don’t wear a topless Yamaka/headband to cover my hairline, and there aren’t rumors that the 2 most important women in my life are being smashed by my colleagues at my job. Yikes.

@datkid: lol that argument is stupid, your team closed out other peoples teams yet what do they have to show for it? a shorter vacation.

I think the Mavs have tremendous upside with Butler and Roddy for next year. Won’t be a cakewalk but this might be their 2 yr window (think Rockets, Bad Boys) before a next dynasty show up. Not sure if that will be MIA (pun intended).
Good thing for the Heat is that their shortcomings are glaring and they do need a guy like a Dalembert at the 5. But what they need most is a leader. Whether on the floor or on the bench. Tinkering with the roster to improve it is easier said than done. Spoelstra will not win them a championship. Lebron has gotten too accustomed to losing at the highest stage. I am a lot less optimistic about this Miami team and it’s characteristics than some of you. All I see is that the Mavs without changes can be ready again next year. The Heat not so much. As far as Leboy I agree with Dark when he said the psychological damage might set in permanently. It probably already has.
Shoutout to professionalism, teamsport, humility and the media.

Interesting Philo, I’m kinda surprised Duncan isn’t your number one. I hate the rings argument, but those 3 Finals MVP’s gotta mean something right?

  • http://slamonline.com datkid

all i’m saying is that they got farther than alot of people really expected them to… and beat alot of people’s teams in the process. yeah lebron absolutley sucked… but we’ll be right back in the finals pretty soon.

  • supermaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

The Heats bought all the top players, the refs but a Championship Title is EARNED and you can’t buy a heart of a Champion!!!! How come Lebron always run away when losing in the Finals and never congratulate the opposing team, very unsportsmanlike!!!

After the trade dust settled there wasn’t a team that looked better on paper with the exception being the Lakers. The entire world gave Miami the odds to win it all on sheer talent (Eboy didn’t) and that’s why everybody rooted against them. My biggest disappointment with them is that they couldn’t even force a game 7. The Mavs progressively figured them out defensively as they did all the other teams throughout the entire play-offs and just kept playing their game offensively. Next year the Heat will seriously get bullied around in the East if they don’t toughen up their line-up.

  • bull22

shout out to ALL of you who with ethusiasm for the game made the playoffs interesting, and sergio i did stick around until end of finals as i said. my last item on the agenda today, EBOY a few weeks ago told another fan we are taking final steps in our journey and without further adieu i think this is what he meant…… “THE FINAL JOURNEY” “THOU SHALL LEAD THIS HEAT ON THIS GLORIOUS JOURNEY,THOU SHALL PREPARE A BISCAYNE FEAST FOR YOU, THOU SHALL BE YOUR KING, COME WITH ME MY OBNOXIOUS MIAMI BRETHREN, TO TAKE THESE FINAL STEPS INTO MY ABODE, WHERE THOU IS THE KING OF THE MIAMI SEWERS”……….

    HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH

    Wow, that was fast, Ryne.
After Bull22′s overly long HAHA’s broke multiple comment threads, Slam fixed it in no time.
    Props.
Had to laugh at German Reignman’s Swiss-Singaporean-Whatever line, yep life’s taken me around the globe. It’s a fascinating journey so far.
Thanks to all older Slamfam commenters for your kind congratulations (though i had nothing to do with them winning), always surprised how many people read these comments AND remember old details. One of the reasons why my commenting style has mellowed out over the years.
Anyway, good to see most of the Mavs-Freunde back here to celebrate.
Shout out to GERMAN REIGNMAN, SPACESHIP JAY, BACKBOARD, OVERTIME, MYUNG, SPEEDY
JK LIGHT (it’s been years, bro), and anyone who nearly shed a tear (yup, when Dirk headed for the tunnel, i was close to losing it) for their fav. Player and/or franchise….
YOUR 2011 NBA CHAMPION DALLAS MAVERICKS.
