Dirk Nowitzki Fought Through Illness, Delivered in Game 4

As the media in the press room kept insisting following the Mavs’ gutsy win, Dirk Nowitzki came through in his own version of the “Flu Game”, and helped Dallas tie things up with the Miami Heat. The Star-Telegram has the quotes: “It was a given that Dallas Mavericks star forward Dirk Nowitzki needed some help from his slumping teammates if they were going to have a chance of staying alive in the NBA Finals. He pleaded and even demanded as much before the Game 4 matchup against the Miami Heat on Tuesday at American Airlines Center. Little did Nowitzki know how much help he would need after waking up earlier Tuesday morning with a sinus infection and a 101-degree fever. ‘It wasn’t 103, but it was like 101 this morning. I really didn’t get a good night’s rest, so it was just under the weather a little bit, but just battled it out,’ Nowitzki said. ‘It didn’t look good there in the fourth quarter when we were down nine, but energy and defense really picked us up.’ But clearly in a season of miraculous comebacks and thrilling finishes for the Mavericks, the challenge is never much to Nowitzki and his never-say-die teammates. He scored 21 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, as the Mavericks rallied from a nine-point deficit to take an 86-83 victory before 20,430 frenzied fans at the AAC. They tied the best of seven series at 2-2, ensuring a trip back to Miami for Game 6 on Sunday.”

    The Fever Game?

  • Riggs

after this series win or lose, im putting to rest his “soft” label. I hope everyone else does too.

    ^^ Agreed, He’s shown he’s somehow though.
Gasoft will never be able to do that..

Ditto, no more of that soft talk. Now he is
just another great player who did not have any help.

I hope Dirk and Carlisle buy Deshawn Stevenson a nice dinner. Those 3s in the first half kept the Heat from getting the separation they need to get confident and really start rolling. Without Stevenson’s early scoring, the Mavs would have had to rally back from 20-down instead of 9.

The German cure for a 101 fever is apparently just shutting everyone in the world up. My girlfriend called in sick to work yesterday because her throat was scratchy…

There was a guy at the post game conference who just kept asking the same sh*t over and over: “Dirk, was MJ’s flu game an inspiration for you tonight?, Jet: Do you think Dirk did the same thing Jordan did when he played his Flu game? coach Carlisle: Did Dirk remind you of MJ playing with the flue back in 97?” Different games, different players, different sickness stop that cr*ap! let the players have their own special moments instead of comparing every single thing they do with MJ, seriously.

Yeah the Flu Game comparisons were a bit much. I for one never thought Dirk was soft. I think too many people associate being a finesse player or being primarily a jump shooter as being soft, but I’ve never seen him back down from a challenge a la Gasol against KG in the finals in 2008. That was soft.

    Stop it, people.
This is not Slamonline-commenter mantra you are spewing here. repeat after me: he soft. Soft as charmin, soft as a pillow. Soooooft.
    Got it? Good.

    Hey Darksaber.
What do you say about JET.
I think he has a long way to go to at least come to level 1 in terms of coolness in your ratings but I liked his attitude in the last quarter.

Darksaber…have you been watching the games?

    Darksaber is joking, mdshuai33.

Heat are in trouble tonight if dirk can show that he can still perform with a 101 fever. Not even to mention his history of dominating in game 5′s
