Dwight Howard Confirms That He Will Test Free Agency

Howard continues to publicly make the increasingly hard-to-believe claim that he wants to remain in an Orlando Magic uniform, but what’s certain is that he will become a free agent next summer. NBA.com reports: “Speaking during a break at the adidas Eurocamp as part of a tour of the continent for the shoe company, Howard joked with reporters at a news conference and appeared in good spirits. In a one-on-one interview afterward, though, he made it clear he is not happy with the collective personality of Orlando’s roster and that changes need to be made. The same message, he said, was delivered to owner Rich DeVos and CEO Bob Vander Weide in a meeting last week that included Howard sharing thoughts on everything from personnel to fan involvement and arena atmosphere at home games. ‘I want to win a championship,’ the All-Star center said. ‘I think the owners have to really know that. That’s been my goal and my mission since I’ve been in the NBA — to win a championship. I don’t have side goals or agendas. My main goal is to win a championship. I want to have 14 other guys who feel the same way.’ Asked if the Magic have that now, he said, ‘It’s off and on. Sometimes guys are there whole-heartedly and then sometimes I’ve had teammates allow people getting in their ears and things like that effect the way that they play and approach the game.’ Howard said he did not tell DeVos and Vander Weide specific roster moves he wanted to see. ‘I just told them, ‘We’ve got to have guys who are going to play hard 48 minutes and who are going to battle the other team, who are going to fight night in and night out for a championship,’ he said.”

Welcome to LA. The grammer of that “I ain’t gonna be follow’n no Shaq’s path” story was too terrible to believe. I thought I was reading a quote from the Green Mile.

  • Jer dawg

Way to go, Christina Vest for convincing Dwight to reconsider his position as “Orlando Magic for life.”
Hahaha! It’s Los Angeles’ man to lose! Lakers or Clippers, it doesn’t matter. But Dwight and Blake. It’s over! Games are gonna be delayed and egos gonna be hurt.

  • Brett

Dammit, one year of hearing about Melo trades/moves was enough for me.. now I need to putup with Howard going to X for ages…

In other words ship out Agent Zero cowabunga yo.

  • Josh

Would have been nice to see him say, I am going to test free agency, or to include the quote if he did say it. Now we don’t actually know if he is testing free agency or if that is just the headline to get some views.

  • lexluther757

    And you say Chi-City!

    Come to TDOT

  • KOBESbestFRIEND

If i were the Heat I’d trade Lebron 4 Dwight right now

  • RunNGun

To the Knicks! Make it happen, Isiah!

  • Fab-5 Elite

This is the time for Chicago to start making offers for him. Noah & Boozer for Dwight. Please do this for Derrick Rose, He needs all the help he can get. This line-up would kill

    PG-D Rose
    SG-? Pending
    SF-L Deng
    PF-T Gibson
    C-D Howard

Plus we still gonna have most of the bench on the team, so we still gonna have good role players.

  • angus

come to clipperland, follow shaqs path just tweak it abit

  • r2j

Yep, he’s going. Otis Smith made the trade for Turk and Arenas so they’re paying the luxury tax for going over the cap anyway. Dwight will play somewhere but it won’t be in Orlando.

  • ErnieD

I gotta say… I think Chicago is the one team that can pull off a trade.

  • ErnieD

Jeff Green and Delonte West for Dwight Howard ;P

Take yur talents to South beach.

  • neaorin

I don’t understand why the Lakers fans are so hopeful of getting Dwight. He’s gonna want to go to a team where he has a chance to contend long term. Kobe will be 34 by the time D12 might join him, and the rest of their core are already on the wrong side of 30. The Lakers have no young up and coming potential star players either. To me, either Chicago (by trade) and New Jersey look like the most appealing destinations.

  • tRay

    Cosign neaorin
I think the main reason why he wouldn’t come to LA is because although Kobe is almost 34 he still has to be THE MAN and sometimes takes over when he doesn’t have to. Which ever team D12 goes to he should be the focal point of the offense.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Kobe is turning 33, not 34 people

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

And me being a Laker fan, i dont want Howard. I’d take Odom, Gasol, and Bynum together over him alone anyday

  • Anthony

DWILL TO DHOWARD…. DOESENT THAT SOUNDS NICEEEEEEEEEE???????????????????

  • slamfan4life

Rose+D12…….OH MY GAWD……..make it happen GarPax

  • tRay

@Tae my bad 1 year difference my mistake and me being a Laker fan as well I couldn’t agree more

  • http://slamonline.com kap

If the bulls can get Howard for Boozer and Noah the Lakers damn sure can get him for Bynum/ Odom a much better deal. The lakers don’t have any up and coming stars? Andrew Bynum is second best Center in the league and is 23 years old with one year left on his contract. Kobe would be 33 not 43. Kobe is still a top ten player in the L. Why are people allowed to comment who no nothing about a team.

  • neaorin

first of all, reading comprehension FTW. Kobe will be 34 by NEXT offseason when Dwight will be a FA. There is basically zero chance he will get traded this summer and (I feel) less that 20% he will be traded during the season. Dwight is not Melo, he will want to know he gave it all in Orlando. Second, any team has to feel weary about getting Bynum and his injury history especially as he will be a FA really soon afterward and will likely demand a ton of money. Third, if they are trading him for Dwight then no really young up and coming players would be left, would there? Fourth, Odom’s value to a team looking to rebuild is strictly as an expiring contract.

  • KOBESbestFRIEND

why would the Lakers want Howard when they have Bynum?Bynum was the obvious 2nd best player on the Lakers in the playoffs and has a cheaper pricetag than D12…plus when Drew gets technical fouls he tries 2 hurt the other team instead of just crying 2 the refs about getting hacked all the time cuz he can’t hit free-throws

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I have said that they should get Howard for Gasol and play Howard at the 4 because of his athleticism with Andrew at center. Who’s scoring on a front-line like that?

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

I find it funny that everybody offers all these terrible trade offers for Dwight. Why would the Magic take Pau Gasol back for Dwight? Or even Booz and Noah? Yeah, he may leave in free agency, but the Magic are not desperate.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Dwight Howard is eyeing NY. Book it.

  • Clayton Bigsby

@Kap: Any team with a PF or C that shoots decently from mid-range.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Dwight is quick enough to recover and Andrew is long enough to contest.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The only team(s) Dwight will get traded to are 1 (and most likely) the Nets. 2 – The Lakers w/ either Hedo or Arenas (For Bynum, Shannon Brown, Lamar Odom). Other then that he finished out the season in Orlando and leaves with Chris Paul to somewhere, or finds a way to weasel Bynum out of LA.

  • robb

He “won’t be follow’n no Shaq’s path” because Dwight and Kobe will actually get along.

  • bike

I can see it coming. Just like ‘The Decision’, Dwight will make a nationally televised announcement called ‘My Choice’. He plans on telling the world his choice of team and then announcing that he is gay. All while wearing his skintight superman outfit.

  • O

Let’s keep it 100, Chicago has the best trade chips simply because Lakers don’t want to give up Bynum. So you figure Chicago would have to give up Noah, Boozer AND Deng or someone else. I doubt D-Will wants to go to Jersey/Brooklyn – even if D-Will is still there. Though the Knicks have been mumbling a Stat for Dwight trade, I seriously doubt it would be a straight up trade, and seriously, the Knicks don’t have anyone else to trade. Literally. We only have Stat and Melo left on the team. I’d much rather have a combo of Stat (or Dwight), Melo and CP3 (or D-Will). Dwight, Stat and Melo just wouldn’t work. And as much props as I give Stat for coming to NY and literally carrying the team on his shoulders for as long as he did, i’d trade him for Dwight in a heartbeat.

  • O

I meant I doubt DWIGHT wants to go to Jers…

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

I’ve learned that Kobe doesn’t really get along with anybody…unless that person is a great passer. But I have a feeling he’s Brooklyn bound as well. If he has that “win-now” mentality though, maybe Chicago. Damn, now I’m just guessing along with everyone with a keyboard… On that note, how much money does Denver have?

  • Fat Lever

bike, “My Choice” sounds like a Lifetime Movie of the Week. He’s got to come up with something better than that.

  • boowoods

Dallas would be the perfect fit. I can see him now in that blue and silver along dirk and the three j’s.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@1982 he gets along with Derek Fisher mostly. And he Fish isn’t a great passer.

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

If Dwight thought he got the ball less with Turk and Nelson…Fish and Kobe isn’t any better….
    —–
    Dwight, please come to PHX.
    —–
Actually can I make an erroneous call and say; Dwight I DARE you to go to Miami.

  • rikson

“I don’t have side goals… My main goal is to win a championship.” -> lol

  • Harlem_World

Seriously, right now a Dwight for Lebron trade looks good for both sides. Dwade and Howard is better than DWade and Lebron. Meanwhile, Lebron goes to Orlando and converts them into Cleveland 2.0
