JJ Barea Was Huge for Dallas in Game 5

The diminutive point guard carved up the Miami Heat defense, and helped push the Mavs to the brink of an NBA title. From the Star-Telegram: “Dribbling through the trees is something J.J. Barea is accustomed to, but missing countless shots over those trees is not something the little guy is used to. After repeatedly proving he could dribble through the Heat trees to get to the basket but unable to finish or create plays, Barea was finally the contributor the Mavs needed him to be. Little J.J. Barea scored 17 points with five assists in the Mavs’ 112-103 win in Game 5 on Thursday. ‘He was able to get into the paint and break us down,’ Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. To put Barea’s Game 5 into immediate perspective, he had combined to score 21 points on 25 percent shooting in the previous four games. As a starter for the second time in as many games, Barea hit 6 of 11 from the floor. And he was part of a 3-point shooting performance for the Mavs that bordered on perfect. Barea made 4 of 5 from three-point range. ‘Barea’s penetration was terrific,’ Mavs coach Rick Carlisle said. ‘He got going with his outside game and inside game, which really helped us.’”

give the mavs credit where credit is due, putting this heat team in a position that the 76ers,celtics and bulls could not do, no one saw the mavs winning this many games against the heat…..

This guy is the definition on “WINNING”! He is playing great on the biggest stage in basketball and he is dating a former Miss Universe! If that isn’t “WINNING” what is?

This is a man without fear, for real. Brave brave lil guy.

    @ Bull22
What if some people had the Mavs winning in 6?

reminds me of Nate in last year’s game 5 of the finals. those were the days…

Credit Carlisle with making a great adjustment by inserting Barea in the starting lineup. I just don’t understand why Spo doesn’t counter by starting Mario Chalmers. Chalmers is better at containing Barea and actually provides an offensive threat. I’m not sure what benefit playing Bibby provides at this point.

@max if someone did max, props to them because neither team i picked made it to finals… and i for one am very stunned that the mavericks have played this well, speechless……

    @Milez Long

Not sure about playing great in games 1 – 4 cause dude was chucking up bricks. But in game 5, man was bringing it. Either way, gotta give him props for dating a former Miss Universe and for his fearlessness. Kinda remind me of Muggsy Bogues and Earl Boykins.

Barea wasn’t “huge” in game five. He was Big McLargehuge. Plus, his GF is hotter than a boatload of Guatemalan insanity peppers. So, he’s got that goin’ for him. (Ayyyyyy…caliente!)

I bet Mavs to win in 7, but I can’t take credit. It was out of desperation to win our pool because I had picked San Antonio and OKC and wouldn’t have won if I picked the Heat anyways, because so did he. And now he’s the one nervous. Ha!

    PUERTO RICO……
    HOOOOO!
JET and JJ have played very well the last 2 games. One more of these performances and Mavs are taking this.
It’s as simple as that, frankly.

    I’m so happy for dude.
I remember when he played at Northeastern, few people knew about him, but I kept up with him while he was there. Never got to watch him on tv, but I’d check his $tats every now and then, and dude was killin’ cats. Dude averaged 20 points a game throughout his four year career.
I figured he’d then go play proffesionally somewhere overseas or in Latin America and never be heard from again in the states.
    Glad I was proven wrong.
    And his girl? Damn, son!

The best PR player in the league right now… Doing it big for the island.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

Well, Bull, I had the Mavs losing in the 1st round, but at the start of the finals, I said Mavs in 6.

  • JESU

I am from PR, living in PR and the press is treating JJ very good in USA Mainland, so I differ from smk73. We are very proud of him, and about 80% of the fans in here are Dallas fans (converted from the Lakers). There are still some people that like Miami for obvious reasons (such as talent and geographical location).

Pride of Puerto Rico and of Northeastern University! He can still perform better than game 5. He’s been a proven scorer and play-maker his whole life.
