Knicks, TWolves Discussing Toney Douglas-Jonny Flynn Swap

With Ricky Rubio on his way, the Minnesota Timberwolves won’t have much use for their current point man Jonny Flynn, so they’re looking to move him asap, it appears. The New York Daily News is reporting that Minny may be shipping Flynn to the Knicks in exchange for combo guard Toney Douglas: “The Knicks have had preliminary discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves about a trade for point guard Jonny Flynn. No formal deal is in place, but the Knicks are debating whether Flynn, the sixth overall pick of the 2009 draft would be a viable option to back up Chauncey Billups for at least one season. Flynn has become expendable now that the Wolves have signed Spanish guard Ricky Rubio, who was taken one pick ahead of Flynn. Toney Douglas would likely be the player traded for Flynn. However, Douglas is coming off major shoulder surgery, which in theory would make him tough to deal. But Flynn is a similar medical risk. The 6-foot guard out of Syracuse had hip surgery last July and was limited to 53 games in his second year, not including a stint in the D-League. Coincidentally, Flynn is represented by Leon Rose, the agent for Carmelo Anthony as well as Chris Paul, whom the Knicks are targeting as their future point guard.”

So the article is trying to say Leon rose is trading Douglas for Flynn who will then be swapped out in a sign and trade for Chris Paul eventually? Either way Minnesota is losing

Keep Flyn for back up.. Knicks don’t need him as much

  • LeBron de Con

Flynn would be great making turnovers for the Knicks.

    Flynn not the answer guys.

I haven’t seen Flynn play at all. Can anyone fill me in on his game and how he would fit in NY’s system?

  • Marleyy

@MikeC..His game is like Steve Francis game minus the jump shot and above the rim dunks. In short he has lots of handles, penetration ability and is extremely quick.

  • rich

    ^^^^bingo. higher basketball IQ though

^^^ yeah whatever, he would be better than what he is right now because he is just as athletic with his 40 inch vertical and he definitely faster.

Knicks do need a back up PG, anthony carter?? get out. But I like Tony and I dont want to see him play for Minny, I dont think hed get a lot of PT there, plus he was really good for NY as a combo guard/defensive stopper

Toney is the Knicks’ best perimeter defender… But he’d be quite good in Minnesota and could probably start at the 2.
    1. Rubio
    2. Douglas
    3. Beasley
    4. Love
    5. Milicic
Not bad at all. Or they could put Wes Johnson at the 2, but yeah.

@Teddy – Wes Johnson at the 2 for me…that teams has a really ugly identity though doesn’t it… what can those 4 achieve? I’m just hoping for a Rubio coming out party (no homo) and a team that can go .500 and threaten for a playoff spot past the allstar break.

Jonny Flynn is very unselfish and a great chemistry/glue guy for a team. Billups would be a great mentor for Flynn. Here’s hoping Flynn gets to “come home” too.

  • MikeC.

@D12FSU – Anthony Carter is actually pretty much a perfect backup PG. He plays hard-nose D, and only does things that he can actually do. He knows his limitations and plays within them. He’s a decent outside shooter, can get the ball up the floor under pressure and get the team into the offense. My only problem with AC is that he needs to be 4 or 5 years younger.

  • john

knicks are retarded if they make this trade

  • Saku 39

I liked Flynn in college and he has a higher ceiling. I wouldn’t mind seeing this for NY.

I like Douglas better than Flynn. Flynn has great handles and basketball IQ… but he doesn’t have the court vision to be a true point and he doesn’t have the height or spot-up shot to be an effect scoring point.
And he doesn’t have the defense to be in the NBA.

  • staywierd38

johny flyn sucks AC is better hah AC is just older duh

  • Kid Viscious

Rodney Stuckey for Johnny Flynn Make it happen!!!

  • D12FSU

@Mike C, yea I agree that he understands his role and limitations, but like you said, the man is pretty old, so why wouldnt you want a back up who can do more things and do them better that AC, and I believe Douglas or Flynn is better suited to be Chauncey’s understudy

Didn’t you see him play against Boston?
He went off one game! :)

  • Josh

I think Douglas is more of a point guard than a 2 guard. A bit small for playing the 2, and especially if you pair him with Rubio, your backcourt is teensy. Don’t see why Knicks would want to get rid of him anyway, kid is a good player.

  • shuref00t

I’m also not too familiar with Flynn’s game, but I don’t understand why the Knicks would consider getting rid of their best defensive guard.
