Mark Jackson: ‘Ellis Is The Third Best SG In The League’

It’s become somewhat of a forgone conclusion that the Golden State Warriors will deal Monta Ellis this offseason. As trade talks heat up, Bay Area fans are pondering their team’s future without the volume scorer. But Ellis has a strong supporter within the organization that may keep him on Golden State’s roster: new head coach Mark Jackson. From Philly.com:

“‘I want Monta Ellis on this basketball team,’ Jackson told reporters at his introductory news conference. ‘This guy is a big-time player. And I think he’s the third best shooting guard in the league. You have Kobe, obviously, and Dwyane Wade. I will match [Ellis] up against anybody else on a given night and feel extremely comfortable about it.’ Jackson did admit that Ellis could improve defensively. ‘You can nitpick what he can and can’t do, but at the end of the day, a coach will look brilliant if he has a guy who can go make a play,’ Jackson said. ‘He’s a flat-out scorer. He’s a much-improved, underrated passer and facilitator. He’s a guy I embrace on this team . . . He’s an outstanding player who I look forward to coaching.’ Of course, that also might be posturing in order to help drive up Ellis’ value. Reports in the Bay area have described an Ellis deal as inevitable. Once word leaked about the possible Sixers trade, a number of teams have called the Warriors about Ellis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper cited Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando, Portland and the Lakers as having also shown interest, according to league sources.”

…just read this whole article in MARK JACKSON’s commentator voice… who else?

  • tRay

When you think about it it’s not so far fetched. I mean 1. Kobe 2. DWade and 3. Monta
dude is pretty legit 2 guard

  • Jake

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Did Ginobili die? James Harden? healthy Tyreke Evans?

  • tRay

I knew I forgot about Manu lol but Harden naw and I thought Tyreke was primarily a PG?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Kap, don’t think James Harden is ready for the title third best SG…

  • B-More Mike

    @LP: that’s crazy me too!!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@niQ…my bad u r right. He will be soon though hopefully.Forgot about Joe Johnson but I realized in the early to mid 2000′s the SG was the deepest spot in the league and loaded with all stars.

  • Rasheedionics

Monta Ellis is the only true scorer on the team. A lot of people would qualify for best 3rd SG in the league if they had the green light to shoot as much as you want as Monta did last year. Nothing special about him. You can always find a shooter. He doesn’t have take over the game capabilities like Kobe and Dwyane. You can easily put Eric Gordon or Kevin Martin in his spot, and they would shine just the same. If they can get Andre or a legit big man for him, i’d say do it.

  • Rasheedionics

    @ZoomZoom what you smoking?

  • tRay

Idk but whatever he is smoking pass it to Cali lol

  • ThaWindy

    Ray Allen??????

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    1. I totally read the MJax comments with his commentator voice before I got to the comments, esp ..”He’s a flat-out scorer..”
    2. Jason Terry/Monta Ellis/Demar Derozan as all time Greatest shooting guards. Zoom’s smoking the same high-grade Pippen was couple weeks ago.

  • ctkennedy

Monta Ellis numbers r in line with Wade n Kobe …Wade kills him in blocks n thats it ….i got him 4th …i rather have Joe Johnson size n D over the course of a season …but a one game or series situation ..i have no problem puttin Ellis 3rd

  • jgray

ZoomZoom..you are trippin! Especially when you put Kobe ahead of Jordan! Jason Terry too? Woooooow!

I do not think the Dubs are going to trade Monta. Especially after a small back court just won the championship!

  • fruizm

@Kap…..James Harden better than Ellis??? HAHAHAHA.

  • ianlegend

    @LP Me too!! hahahahaha

  • unrel

i’d take manu and ray allen over monta… maybe he’s the 3rd best tweener in the league..

  • LP

Demar Derozan and Jason Terry might not be the best shooting guards on their teams….you guys are crazy. Monta can do it all, I know yall dont see WARRIORS games, but dmn… 3 or 4, Joe Johnson interchangeble…

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

    File under Things-Mark-Jackson-Wouldn’t-Have-Said-a-Week-Ago.

  • http://slamonline.com Tracy

I’ll have whatever zoomzoom is having, but yeah it’s a pretty legit claim to have Monta there.

  • cramzy

yep, impossible to read his quotes without hearing his abc voice now

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

I’d put Manu third, then Ellis, then JJ

  • bashmo

PEOPLE ARE SMOKING CRACK 1. Dwyane Wade 2. Kobe 3. Joe Johnson 4. Brandon Roy 5. Manu Ginobili/Ray Allen/ Monta Ellis

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you can’t say people are smoking crack and then proceed to include Brandon Roy in your top 5 SG list. Makes you look like you either smoke crack or haven’t watched basketball in over a year.

  • Stickz

could you help but read it in his voice? That’s hilarious!

  • Jono

3rd best SG in the league talent-wise is JR Smith. Being the number 1 knucklehead and team-mates with Birdman dosen’t help at all though.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

I was going to also include Paul Pierce.. but I guess he’s more considered SF.

  • Jono

    Mama there goes that man!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I don’t trust Monta in a stable offense or a halfcourt offense. He’s a volume shooter and a liability on defense.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I saw someone say pair Monta with Derrick Rose…now that person is on crack.

  • Stickz

I’d put Wade and Kobe, and probably Joe Johnson ahead of Monta. Possibly Eric Gordon, too. Tyreke’s not there yet, Demar never will be. Jason Terry? REally?

  • Youngindy21

Wrong, Eric Gordon is wayyy better than Monta Ellis. Gordon is a great perimeter shooter and can finish at the basket like D. Rose. This man is crazy if he thinks that Monta Ellis is better than Eric Gordon. The only thing Gordon sucks at is rebounding and that is because he is a little undersized.

I say Monta is top 5 but not top 3. Mark Jackson has been kissing ass a lot this past few weeks since his job. Even watching the Heat Finals after was painful b.c it was obvious he was kissing the Heat’s ass. Van Gundy is the only one that doesnt use the announcer time to kiss ass or try and get a job.

  • hiphopcop

    1. Kobe 2. Wade and Eric Gordon is 3rd. Joe Johnson is a bum and yes Ginaboli is officially dead, everybody else are either glorified role players or ARE going to be

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

He doesn’t really believe that, he’s just trying to up the trade value.

  • bike

He meant the third best SG in the league that rides a moped.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Its funny when people from a guys hometown come in and say things like their is no underlying bias. Eric Gordon is from Indiana……his support comes from young indy, and he pointed out aspects of Gordons game (shooting, finishing at the basket) that Monta Ellis is either equal to or superior to him in. Eric Gordon is a much better defender, that’s really it.

  • Red Star

I don’t know if I would go so far to say he’s the 3rd best SG in the league! He is a good player but I consider him a second or third option. The Lakers would be a great fit for him!! Lakers 4 Life!!!

  • http://www.listerblister.blogspot.com rainman10

haha someone said JR Smith. Oh my. T-Mac is still better than JR Smith. Any love for Kevin Martin here? Jason Richardson? OJ Mayo? You know, since you guys are mentioning Derozan, JR, and Harden.

  • Adrian Zapata

    1. Kobe – 4 rings, proven scorer, still highly efficent, great D
    2. Wade – 1 ring, proven scorer, great passer
    3. Manu – 3 rings, clutch proven scorer, great D
    4. Ray Allen – 1 ring
    5. Joe Johnson

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

    @adrian, Kobe-5 rings

  • http://nba.com EJ

it’s a close race between Monta, JJ, Tyreke, Manu and Eric Gordon.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    Deshawn Stevenson?

  • Oh Nose

    ^ lol

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Someday Kobe will pick up that elusive 5th ring… Brian Cardinal can play the 2 so i say him at the #3 SG spot…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    kobe has 5 rings.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Someday.. someday

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

someday a year ago. he’s going after number 6 not number 5. And with Mike Brown I wouldn’t bet on it. atleast without Dwight.

  • el_larsen

how can he forget the quiet bomber ERIC GORDON!
once again he s so underrated.hope next year he ll plaY the ASG

  • Shadojoker

lol@LP,…me too!! Mama..there goes that man!!!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Someday someday… Kobe is gunna show LeBron how to win with MikeB as your head coach watch. I think MB will do a fine job with his defense first approach with a team that doesn’t need much help on offense.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lake they are scrapping the triangle all together. Just like when Phil Jackson was out in Chicago they have tried to purge the team of any of his remnants. Its the reason Brian Shaw didn’t get the job. Basically Mike Brown has to implement a new offense and defense. Sorry

  • robb

I still think Manu is the 3rd best SG but Monta’s a great player. 4th best SG in the league, if he improves his defense he’ll be the 3rd best for sure.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

They have some crazy european dude doing their offense. But i understand why you think this can’t turn out well. I just happen to have allot of faith in the actual team to just ‘get it done’. We’ll see obviously, but i’m excited not saddened by MB… I’m down for something new. I think they need something new. Kobe especially.

  • robb

“Someday Kobe will pick up that elusive 5th ring”.- LakeShow. Jun.14.11. WTF!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

So Lakeshow you really think Kobe Bryant respects Mike Brown? Even after he refused to even say he’s excited about his hiring?

  • robb

Kobe will respect Brown when he proves himself. Right now he’s just being polite. Let’s see how long it lasts.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I think Kobe respects “WINNING” and he will respect whomever he needs to in order to win. I truly believe that. Maybe not early in his career,(ie shaq) but definitely now. I think Brown will gain their respect also. You don’t always have to immediately have someones respect, sometime you have to earn it, and i am hoping Brown earns it.

  • johhny boi

monta equals cluth, monta has more game winners than any other sg in the league but kobe, nuff said. third best in the league is right

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

James Harden better than Monta Ellis…..? C’mon, Kap.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

nvm, you corrected your statement. sry, i hadn’t read that yet.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Haha i feel ya Teddy i was like Kap is on my team but dude has no idea what he’s saying haha. But JH will be a great SG in a couple years.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Definitely, LakeShow. I see him cracking an all-star team some day, maybe in 2-3 years.

  • angus

some of these comments are just as funny as marks….hand down man down!

  • BadBadLeroyBrown

I say it goes like this:
    Delonte West
    Boobie Gibson
    Courtney Lee
    Thabo Sefalosha

    NOW who’s smoking something?

  • http://theurbangriot.com The NUPE

Monta at #3 could be debated either way. Not an unrealistic statement from a guy who might be your coach.

  • Fannin

Joe Johnson is something like a bum. He has talent on par with Wade, truth be told. But his heart pumpls Kool-Aid. Period point blank. He should have taken his butt up to Chicago last offseason. Championship.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Pardeep

    He is right.

  • Acarter

Joe Johnson isnt in my top ten shooting guards….he’s 6″7 6″8 and shoots nothing but jump shots…the reason why Atlanta is going anywhere…Its Kobe>>>>>>> then theres the reat of the 2 guards in the league…

  • Acarter

  • Gabe

You guys need to watch more basketball. Jason Terry, James Harden get the eff out of here with that ish. Jason Terry doesn’t even start. You can tell you guys watched the playoffs, but they didn’t play like that every game all season. I bet none of them scored 46 points and I bet you”ll say that’s how the warriors play all offense but going 17 for 23. Not to mention every game the Warriors play the coach of the other team is telling his guys to double team him when ever he gets the ball. Ray Allen…..they said shooting guard not 3 point shooter.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Lets keep it real, Ellis is a poor man’s AI and I watch plenty off games, where he went for his at the teams expense. I would trade Ellis for anything to get rid of him. BOOK IT!!

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

From a talent standpoint, I agree with him. From a who-are-you-taking-to-build-a-team-around standpoint, I completely disagree. His numbers are ridiculous but his team sucks. For example, he gets a lot of steals, but he isn’t necessarily a great defender–he takes a lot of gambles, which lead to open lay-ups, and, yes, steals. But Monta’s a kind of selfish player. I’d take a HEALTHY Brandon Roy over him any day.

  • jay

@Kap Your clearly not a Monta Ellis fan, cause his mid-range is right there with Kobe, and he’s getting better from the 3 every year. On scoring alone, he’s better than Rose. Rose is a better player no doubt but Monta has a higher % from everywhere on the court. The only reason the Warriors have a bad record is the 5 spot, they lack a center and a decent bench. Monta had the 2nd or 3rd most 40 point games this past season. His biggest flaw is defense and being undersized at the 2, hes only 6’3 but hes guarding players 6’6.

  • http://www.angryarab.com Tariq

I won’t be compiling any shooting guard lists, but I will say this: Offensively, Monta Ellis is one of the top 10-15 players in the league. EASILY. Problem is he can’t play D. He’s still a helluva player. Oh, and Mark Jackson may very be trying to drive up his trade value (which is pretty high in any case), but I don’t think it’s a foregone conclusion that they trade him. I wouldn’t be surprised AT ALL if he stays a Warrior. And that Iguodala trade doesn’t really make sense to me.

  • 6marjons

    co-sign with @adrian zapata
    ellis is close though

  • http://www.angryarab.com Tariq

Moose: Your saying that you’d take a healthy Brandon Roy over Monta isn’t really a knock on Monta. I’d take a healthy Roy over 90% of the league. But a healthy Roy is something I don’t think we’ll ever see again. Sadly.

  • glenn

Monta hasn’t been on as big of a stage as Kobe, Wade, or any other 2-Guards mentioned. I’m a diehard warriors fan and I’ll say this about warriors fans – in addition to watching warriors games, we watch a ton of other team’s basketball games because not only does our team suck and not get as much tv time as the lakers (kobe), boston (ray allen), heat (wade), or spurs (manu), but we also don’t ever make the playoffs. So while all the aforementioned players ARE legit primetime 2-guards, they are because of the exposure of their talents to the rest of world.
And everyone’s gonna know the star potential of their home team’s best player(s) but not ever nba fan pays attention to other teams, or other players for that matter, like warriors fans do, which is why when warriors fans support Monta against the rest of the league’s 2 guards it’s just an indication that he actually is that good.

  • jflash

I can’t wait to see him on the bench shouting, ‘mama, there goes that man!’ whenever someone on the opposing team dunks.

  • http://hibachi20.blogspot.com Moose

@Tariq: I’m not saying it’s a knock on him, I was pointing out that Monta just isn’t the 3rd best SG in the league.

  • rikson

wade, kobe, rayray, manu, gordon, jj, ellis…

  • Curtis

    3.HEALTHY Brandon Roy
    4.Joe Johnson
    6. Tyreke

  • Curtis

cant believe no one here mentioned roy

  • http://www.angryarab.com Tariq

But why are you bringing a HEALTHY Roy into the discussion? That player unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore. Do you have an in-his-prime Tim Duncan on your list of top PFs in the league today too?

  • I Got 5 Rings Fool!

@Lakeshow. You a Fugazi Fan. Only 4 rings? You bleed Celtic Green ya Masshole.

    1. Kobe
    2. Wade
    3. Ellis (soon to be playing the DRose/Westbrook role on MY squad)

    4. Ain’t nobody else matter, Ellis and I, we’re gonna rip it up like Wade/LeBron, 4, 5, 6, 7…(oh wait) ZERO Rings, LOL.

    5. Lebron? Have you Seen my 3, 4, 5 Championship Rings? Little tomato, I’ll bet you a “King James” muppet with a Black Mamba T-Shirt you never catch-up. The game is over, the game is over, bbbbbbbb bye bye!

Suckas! LePippen ain’t got MY killer instinct, Yo! He ain’t no closer. Kyra’s got more cojones. Ellis has more grit. BK wants wants his crown back ya paper tiger. I’m gonna take Monta under my wing and we’re gonna go Glengarry Glen Ross on the League. Always Be Closing.

Yo, I Got 5 (FIVE) Rings Fool!

    -Kobe (The Closer) Bryant

  • giogolo

Funny everytime I see an article about mark jackson I always hear his commentator voice in my head…oh no. !!!

  • Michael

Some of you who say Monta is a volume scorer are just echoing what you might here haters say on tv. His Fg% is the same as Kobe and he is not selfish he averages 5 assists a game, which is tied for what curry averages who is their PG. To the dude that said something about finishing…..I will take Monta finishing over everyone in the NBA he makes it look very easy, especially since he is only 6′ 3″. His jumper is amazing and 3pt shooting is better than most SG’s. Kevin Martin/Eric Gordon/Tyreke Evans….psh please get real they aren’t in the same universe. I haved watched him play since high school….one game against Oak Hill that had Rondo and Josh Smith and they couldn’t sniff guarding him. He dropped 45 on them. His team sucks ass and he gets doubled most the game in the NBA and he still kills it. Some of you need to do a little research on numbers because he puts Manu to shame as well(and I love Manu) rings aren’t everything its a team game ask Miami. Bottom line dude is a beast and I wish he would go to a bigger market/better team so more could see what he really has to offer. And so people like John Hollinger would quit ripping him apart because his numbers dont add up in his bs PER formula. That formula is waited very heavy on ft attempts/%, which is bs because ft attempts are possessions as well even though they dont show up unless u make the and one. If you dont believe me about the PER, just look upManu and Monta…..Manu’s PER is way higher and why? Same with Kobe…..its retarded. Monta has better stats in every category than Manu and his stats are better or the same as Kobe in every category besides rebounds, so why is Kobe’s PER so much higher…..Hollinger your formula is sh*t, and that is where people get that Monta is a volume scorer I have heard him say it 100 times and write about it. People think what he says actually means something, who is John Hollinger…please
