Mark Jackson: ‘Ellis Is The Third Best SG In The League’

It’s become somewhat of a forgone conclusion that the Golden State Warriors will deal Monta Ellis this offseason. As trade talks heat up, Bay Area fans are pondering their team’s future without the volume scorer. But Ellis has a strong supporter within the organization that may keep him on Golden State’s roster: new head coach Mark Jackson. From Philly.com:

“‘I want Monta Ellis on this basketball team,’ Jackson told reporters at his introductory news conference. ‘This guy is a big-time player. And I think he’s the third best shooting guard in the league. You have Kobe, obviously, and Dwyane Wade. I will match [Ellis] up against anybody else on a given night and feel extremely comfortable about it.’ Jackson did admit that Ellis could improve defensively. ‘You can nitpick what he can and can’t do, but at the end of the day, a coach will look brilliant if he has a guy who can go make a play,’ Jackson said. ‘He’s a flat-out scorer. He’s a much-improved, underrated passer and facilitator. He’s a guy I embrace on this team . . . He’s an outstanding player who I look forward to coaching.’ Of course, that also might be posturing in order to help drive up Ellis’ value. Reports in the Bay area have described an Ellis deal as inevitable. Once word leaked about the possible Sixers trade, a number of teams have called the Warriors about Ellis, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The newspaper cited Atlanta, Chicago, Memphis, Orlando, Portland and the Lakers as having also shown interest, according to league sources.”

…just read this whole article in MARK JACKSON’s commentator voice… who else?

  • tRay

When you think about it it’s not so far fetched. I mean 1. Kobe 2. DWade and 3. Monta
dude is pretty legit 2 guard

  • Jake

    Haha…yep

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Did Ginobili die? James Harden? healthy Tyreke Evans?

  • tRay

I knew I forgot about Manu lol but Harden naw and I thought Tyreke was primarily a PG?

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Kap, don’t think James Harden is ready for the title third best SG…

  • B-More Mike

    @LP: that’s crazy me too!!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

@niQ…my bad u r right. He will be soon though hopefully.Forgot about Joe Johnson but I realized in the early to mid 2000′s the SG was the deepest spot in the league and loaded with all stars.

  • ZoomZoom

HE ACTUALLY MIGHT BE TOP 5 GREATEST SG OF ALL TIME!!

    1.KOBE 2.MJ 3.WADE 4.JASON TERRY 5.DEMAR DEROZAN/MONTAE ELLIS

  • Rasheedionics

Monta Ellis is the only true scorer on the team. A lot of people would qualify for best 3rd SG in the league if they had the green light to shoot as much as you want as Monta did last year. Nothing special about him. You can always find a shooter. He doesn’t have take over the game capabilities like Kobe and Dwyane. You can easily put Eric Gordon or Kevin Martin in his spot, and they would shine just the same. If they can get Andre or a legit big man for him, i’d say do it.

  • Rasheedionics

    @ZoomZoom what you smoking?

  • tRay

Idk but whatever he is smoking pass it to Cali lol

  • ThaWindy

    Ray Allen??????

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

    1. I totally read the MJax comments with his commentator voice before I got to the comments, esp ..”He’s a flat-out scorer..”
    2. Jason Terry/Monta Ellis/Demar Derozan as all time Greatest shooting guards. Zoom’s smoking the same high-grade Pippen was couple weeks ago.

  • ctkennedy

Monta Ellis numbers r in line with Wade n Kobe …Wade kills him in blocks n thats it ….i got him 4th …i rather have Joe Johnson size n D over the course of a season …but a one game or series situation ..i have no problem puttin Ellis 3rd

  • jgray

ZoomZoom..you are trippin! Especially when you put Kobe ahead of Jordan! Jason Terry too? Woooooow!

I do not think the Dubs are going to trade Monta. Especially after a small back court just won the championship!

  • fruizm

@Kap…..James Harden better than Ellis??? HAHAHAHA.

  • ianlegend

    @LP Me too!! hahahahaha

  • unrel

i’d take manu and ray allen over monta… maybe he’s the 3rd best tweener in the league..

  • LP

Demar Derozan and Jason Terry might not be the best shooting guards on their teams….you guys are crazy. Monta can do it all, I know yall dont see WARRIORS games, but dmn… 3 or 4, Joe Johnson interchangeble…

    File under Things-Mark-Jackson-Wouldn’t-Have-Said-a-Week-Ago.

  • http://slamonline.com Tracy

I’ll have whatever zoomzoom is having, but yeah it’s a pretty legit claim to have Monta there.

  • cramzy

yep, impossible to read his quotes without hearing his abc voice now

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

I’d put Manu third, then Ellis, then JJ

  • bashmo

PEOPLE ARE SMOKING CRACK 1. Dwyane Wade 2. Kobe 3. Joe Johnson 4. Brandon Roy 5. Manu Ginobili/Ray Allen/ Monta Ellis

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

you can’t say people are smoking crack and then proceed to include Brandon Roy in your top 5 SG list. Makes you look like you either smoke crack or haven’t watched basketball in over a year.

  • Stickz

could you help but read it in his voice? That’s hilarious!

  • Jono

3rd best SG in the league talent-wise is JR Smith. Being the number 1 knucklehead and team-mates with Birdman dosen’t help at all though.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

I was going to also include Paul Pierce.. but I guess he’s more considered SF.

  • Jono

    Mama there goes that man!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I don’t trust Monta in a stable offense or a halfcourt offense. He’s a volume shooter and a liability on defense.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I saw someone say pair Monta with Derrick Rose…now that person is on crack.

  • Stickz

I’d put Wade and Kobe, and probably Joe Johnson ahead of Monta. Possibly Eric Gordon, too. Tyreke’s not there yet, Demar never will be. Jason Terry? REally?

  • Youngindy21

Wrong, Eric Gordon is wayyy better than Monta Ellis. Gordon is a great perimeter shooter and can finish at the basket like D. Rose. This man is crazy if he thinks that Monta Ellis is better than Eric Gordon. The only thing Gordon sucks at is rebounding and that is because he is a little undersized.

  • BAWSE

I say Monta is top 5 but not top 3. Mark Jackson has been kissing ass a lot this past few weeks since his job. Even watching the Heat Finals after was painful b.c it was obvious he was kissing the Heat’s ass. Van Gundy is the only one that doesnt use the announcer time to kiss ass or try and get a job.

  • hiphopcop

    1. Kobe 2. Wade and Eric Gordon is 3rd. Joe Johnson is a bum and yes Ginaboli is officially dead, everybody else are either glorified role players or ARE going to be

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

He doesn’t really believe that, he’s just trying to up the trade value.

  • bike

He meant the third best SG in the league that rides a moped.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Its funny when people from a guys hometown come in and say things like their is no underlying bias. Eric Gordon is from Indiana……his support comes from young indy, and he pointed out aspects of Gordons game (shooting, finishing at the basket) that Monta Ellis is either equal to or superior to him in. Eric Gordon is a much better defender, that’s really it.

  • Red Star

I don’t know if I would go so far to say he’s the 3rd best SG in the league! He is a good player but I consider him a second or third option. The Lakers would be a great fit for him!! Lakers 4 Life!!!

  • http://www.listerblister.blogspot.com rainman10

haha someone said JR Smith. Oh my. T-Mac is still better than JR Smith. Any love for Kevin Martin here? Jason Richardson? OJ Mayo? You know, since you guys are mentioning Derozan, JR, and Harden.

  • Adrian Zapata

    1. Kobe – 4 rings, proven scorer, still highly efficent, great D
    2. Wade – 1 ring, proven scorer, great passer
    3. Manu – 3 rings, clutch proven scorer, great D
    4. Ray Allen – 1 ring
    5. Joe Johnson

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

    @adrian, Kobe-5 rings

  • http://nba.com EJ

it’s a close race between Monta, JJ, Tyreke, Manu and Eric Gordon.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Max

    Deshawn Stevenson?

  • Oh Nose

    ^ lol

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Someday Kobe will pick up that elusive 5th ring… Brian Cardinal can play the 2 so i say him at the #3 SG spot…

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    kobe has 5 rings.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

    Someday.. someday

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

someday a year ago. he’s going after number 6 not number 5. And with Mike Brown I wouldn’t bet on it. atleast without Dwight.
