Video: Mavs Motivated By Miami’s Premature Celebration?

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

After the Dallas Mavericks put the finishing touches on their stunning NBA Finals Game 2 comeback victory, the celebration Dwyane Wade and LeBron James had in front of the Dallas bench with 7 minutes to go (and Miami up by 15 points) became the story of the night.

According to the emotional Jason Terry and Tyson Chandler, LeBron and Wade’s premature woofing lit a fire under the Mavs. In this clip, you can briefly see Terry yelling at ‘Bron and DWade (0:14 second mark.)

The Heat superstars, of course, denied that they overdid it with the celebrating, and Dirk Nowitzki said he didn’t even see it.

From the Star-Telegram:

“We noticed it,” said center Tyson Chandler, who collected 13 points and seven rebounds. “It was definitely frustrating when you’ve got a guy showboating in front of your bench with seven minutes left. I think it angered a lot of us. You say the game is not over. I don’t care what they say, the game is not over.” In the Mavs’ huddle, coach Rick Carlisle told his team to go out and prove that the game wasn’t over. And they did.

“Right at that moment (of the Heat’s celebration) it was a turning point in the game,” said guard Jason Terry, who had 16 points and five assists. “Obviously we come out of that timeout and if we don’t score, then we’re pretty much dead. We looked at each guy in the huddle to a man. Me specifically looked at Dirk and said, there’s no way we’re going out like this … It’s too much time left in this game,” said Terry, who had eight points in the winning rally. “And for us to go out in a blowout‑type fashion with them dunking on us, shooting threes on us, it would have been disheartening. We continued to keep faith in ourselves. We went out and grinded it out and got it done.”

Celebration-Gate is an easy and convenient media narrative, and a fun Internet joke launching pad. But it’s not why the Mavs won the game.

Dallas quite simply was the hungrier, smarter team down the stretch, relying on their defense, and the heroics of Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki to send them home with a split.

Dallas blitzed LeBron and walled off the paint, forcing the Miami Heat to use a lot of the shot clock, leaving them with little choice but to hoist up desperate three after desperate three. Miami ended up attempting a total of 30 threes (only hitting 9) for the game, a sure recipe for disaster.

The next three games will be played in Dallas, where the suddenly-rejuvenated Mavericks will be looking to do a little bit of their own celebrating.

serves em right..hahaha, those dudes were celebrating prematurely as if they already won the championship, wht a showboat, theres no class, unlike a true champion in the likes of MJ,Bird etc..
Lebron has always been kinda boastful that’s why he is not on my list of NBA’s greatest players, cozfor me greatest means everything he is doin in and out of the court,,maybe a bit immature..lol

  • bull22

i will agree with wade that teams do things through out the game to motivate themselves.
but lebron downright was taunting and for whatever reason is trying to do his best imitation of kevin garnett….

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

THE CHOKER STRIKES AGAIN! HA HA HA!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Maybe you should wait until you’re holding the Larry O’Brien trophy before you start celebrating there Bron Bron…D!ck…

  • pbg

orange, you must have been waiting since the playoffs started to use that line! good one!

  • vtrobot

Not a Heat fan and I don’t think they overdid it. The media is who overdoes it. ‘Bron was excited for his teammate who is finally back in a good groove again. Not a big deal at all. That’s great that DAL used it as motivation, but that didn’t cost MIA the game. Perhaps those 21 missed threes did. I think DAL’s main focus next game should be TAKING BETTER CARE OF THE BALL. They got fast breaked and dunked all over their azzz last night.

  • Truth

Mavs won because LeBron was taking time to make a “decision”. You know, like thinking the Mavs would hold their breath while he took time for the media to fawn. LJ=DB

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

Yeah, Wade and Bron are so known for their modesty.

  • jimmythesaint67

GREAT comeback! Want to see clip of Lady Dwyana’s tantrum after blowing layup/allowing revenge dunk again .. and the NBA office to compare that meltdown to Carlisle’s Tech for a Lebron elbow after a Dirk foul pfffft.
The Mavs have so much more character than the Hate. Stay strong in Dallas fellas .. Just keep JET cued in on inbounds plays please, i nearly choked on that open Chalmers 3.

  • http://slamonline.com Bryan Crawford

The overreaction to the alleged “celebration” is ridiculous. I don’t have a problem with it all. Anybody who’s played basketball long enough has celebrated prematurely during a game only to lose it down the stretch. It happens.
Plus… How many times have we seen teams blow games with seemingly insurmountable leads? Miami isn’t immune to it, it can happen to anybody. Nothing to see here. Dallas played a fantastic final 7 minutes and change last night an won the game on an impressive 22-5 run. The Heat kept looking for the homerun ball instead of doing what it was that got them the lead in the first place. So whatever on this overblown celebration crap. It takes away from how good the Mavs played to come back and tie the series.

sigh* It’s funny how the media leaches were making stuff up that it was the whole Dallas team that was frustrated at this, yet in fact it was only Tyson Chandler. Jason Terry mentioned nothing about this motivating them to come back. ” Right at that moment” he ment if they don’t do nothing about this it’s over but they hung in there(Marion had himself a great game & he was the key) & took it proper no doubt, but at least 5 media leaches asked questions regarding post game this like it was a big thing blowing it way out of proportion like Wade & Bron were looking at the dallas bench laughing. Wade hit a trey in front of the dallas bench just after someone yelled ‘brick.’ They were at home if front of their own crowd , can’t they be happy that they were on a run. My main problem is with the media trying to dig a hole where there was nothing to dig for, looks like the reporters had nothing inteligent to ask em. It was great to see Bron & Wade handle the interiew like it should have been handled. Great win for dallas no doubt but it looks like this series is going to be full of twists & runs like dat. Let’s go to dallas & see if we can steal at least 1. Im confident we can. GO HEAT !!

  • AQWORD

Damn , i didn’t think this would happen. First time ever i agree with BC. I take some of that stuff back B. cosigned JalepinoSauce + Overchicken.

How about the Mavs just outplayed them over the last part of the 4th quarter? No? The Mavs just got lucky and made shots because they were “pi*sed”? Nah….never that. The Heat played and “celebrated” like they have all season. Spoelstra was outcoached (as he has been one game in each series in this postseason) and Bron had a subpar game (something he has done once each series this postseason). The Mavs took advantage of sloppy, lazy play in the end and took the win. Don’t sell short their effort just because the rest of your teams have been home for weeks, sucking each other’s d*cks, wishing they could have done something different.

  • AQWORD

! WORD TO ALL THE HATAS MOMMAS !

  • ClydeSays

The Heat are definitely not shy about celebrating early & often, but that wasn’t over the top by any means. Give the Mavs credit for keeping their heads in the game & finishing it out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

The celebration wasn’t even that much of one. The Mavs simply didn’t lost their composure, played an incredible final 7 minutes and tied the series up.
Simple as that. “Home for weeks, sucking each other d*cks”??? Damn, couldn’t we have just left it at fishing? I know gay players are beginning to come out but I doubt there THAT many still in the closet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

    *didn’t lose their composure

  • Thor

    Hollywood as hell….

  • AD

only people who don’t play real bbal and listen to the media thinks this is a celebration….. They were hyped……… Lebron needs to start posting up though

  • Thor

That’s cool Eboy, but can’t YOU wait sucking THEIR d!cks ’till THEY go fishing. Tell me what the other teams are supposed to wish for, besides getting a couple of superstars in their prime as well. As Van Gundy said it just ain’t fair.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Thor….stick your little hammer up your a*s and take your wanna-be Hercules self back to Asgard.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

I must say I love the new “we think we’re elite 3 point shooters” mentality from Bron and Wade…I hope they keep shooting 7 3′s per game the rest of the series. Anyone catch Wade trying to cry foul on the last shot of the game? Looking and the ref like a bully just took his lunch money…that moment was priceless.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Ouch, someone woke up on the wrong side of bed apparently.

  • LP

The celebration wasn’t too much, however, it did infuriate the MAVs…. obviously the turning point of the game.

    Point Blank.

  • LP

You can also make a case that, had Lebron just ‘high fived’ Wade and jogged back to the huddle (like the champoionship-less beast he is), that the Mavs don’t come back from 15 points down.

But the slap boxing, in front of MAVs bench, in Game 2 is a little unnecessary. (as you can see Wade doesn’t even acknowledge it, he knows it isnt over)

  • http://www.boogiewilliams.com Boing Dynasty

Anyone remember that Gif. of Nate Robison busting some moves in the MSG hallways and then the score pops up to show they just got blown out? I think we need a new one of those with Dwyane holding up his form like Sydney Dean at Venice beach.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

i found their celebration annoying and all, but i don’t think it’s grounds for crucifying them the way the media has. good for the mavs using it as motivation though. the mavs just played unbelievably down the stretch, fantastic ball movement and shot making. certainly helped that wade and lebron played hero ball down the stretch, electing to dribble out the clock and launch a three at the shot clock buzzer, hoping they would sink it and make the place go nuts, rather than making the fundamental play.

  • T-Money

out of all people, jason “airplane” terry is talking about over-the-top in game celebration? okay then. how about dirk just handled his biz and bron/wade folded?

  • AQWORD

Don’t worry. You can be Hollywood too Jakim. I think theyr’e making frankenstein vs predator & you won’t need any makeup so more time for fishing or Rosie d!(k $hu(kin’ that is.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

by the way, at what point in the game did wade freak out with the ref? jvg and mark jackson were talking about it later on, but i don’t recall seeing it. must’ve fallen asleep.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

Jason Terry shouldn’t be saying anything after leaving Chalmers WIIIIDE open the possession before Dirk’s game-winner.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

I like the Sydney Dean reference.

  • http://slamonline.com 1982

    Eboy is officially ghey.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@lights out it was during the 2nd Quarter I think while Wade was on the break, he thought he was fouled when he missed the layup

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

@ lights out – DWade went for a layup, didn’t get touched, then screamed at the ref for 45 seconds and didn’t get T’d up…punk a$$ b1tch…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

    I f*cked 1982′s mammie.

  • Ali

    DIRK DIGGLER…with da lefty…

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

wow…this wit battle between Eboy and 1982 is scintillating…

  • fruizm

so what….the heat are still winning this.

  • http://slamonline.com Brad Long

To be fair Jason Terry talking about anyone celebrating excessively is like Elton John calling Richard Simmons “flamboyant”.

  • tRay

Not a big deal at all. I use to play ball in AAU and when ever one of my teammates dunked on someone or just got on a roll you get hyped for them. The media is so over the top. If LeBron took a sh*t they would be all over it.

  • Hollywood26

Say what you want but that was a stupid celebration. Not because it was anything different but because you did it in front of their BENCH!!!!! Unless you are playing the Generals, you had to know that would have an effect. And all you Heat fans stop making excuses. Bron Bron was partying and D Wade was right with him. He was smiling and trying to act cool. He was pissed because Terry fouled him a few plays before on that break to prevent a dunk and was trying to show him up. Instead it pissed off the guy who was cold as ice and got him going. Great job, D Wade. You and Bron Bron might want to cool the show boating until after the game.

  • http://slamonline.com Eboy

    I f*cked Jukai.

  • http://www.fiba.com Darksaber

That tantrum Wade threw would have been disgusting, if he didn’t do it at nearly everygame.
I had a teammate like that once, even in scrimmages, he screamed foul everytime he missed a shot when someone played close D on him.
Every, single.time. after weeks of this, the guy, a hulking Center of a man, never touched the ball on offense. He got the royal snub treatment from most of us. It was glorious.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Billy Hoyle is winning and grinning.

  • http://WWW.SLAMONLINE.COM Benn0

AAAAHHHHHHHHHH, is eboy a lickle bit upset – hahahahah

  • AQWORD

Jason Terry wasnt sayn’ ish about over the top celebrations !!! because he knows he should be the last one to talk about that. If you listened to the post game interviews you would have known what the deal was. The bracketed (of the Heat’s celebration) in this article WAS JUST MADE UP BY MEDIA LEACHES COZ THEY HAD NOTHIN DECENT TO ASK EM. But youre just reading gossip & biting it like a whack MC. FAKE A$$ B!(He$$$ !!

  • Jer dawg

It’s all good. Nobody should like anything the opposite team does, especially this close to championship. Someone is going to feel like it’s been stolen from them. Definite motivational factor. When competing for championship you NEVER want anyone making a basket on you. So, if Terry and Chandler were motivated, great! It’s all there for anybody who wants it more.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Cosign Darksaber – Wade goes bananas about non-fouls at least 2 to 3 times per game.
