Miami Heat Had ‘Mental Breakdown’ Late in Game 2

The Heat made a myriad of errors at the end of Game 2 of the NBA Finals last night, but the most glaring gaffe was not fouling Dirk Nowitzki prior to his game-winning layup, when they still had a foul to give. From the Palm Beach Post: “The Mavericks called timeout with 24.5 seconds left. The game was tied. Everyone knew who would get the ball. Erik Spoelstra, however, had options. He had the option of assignment. He assigned Chris Bosh, not Udonis Haslem, to Dirk Nowitzki. ‘Yeah, that’s a tough one,’ Spoelstra said. ‘I know UD probably is really wishing he had that opportunity to defend him. He had gotten a couple over the top, and the end of the game running it all the way down to the clock, could have gone with either guy. Both guys are good defenders.’ Spoelstra had the option of ordering a foul, before anyone shot. Apparently, he did something close. ‘We talked about it,’ Spoelstra said. ‘We’ve been in that situation before. We didn’t use the foul. Obviously, it looks like right now you could second-guess that, but we didn’t take it.’ ‘It was a mental breakdown on us,’ Dwyane Wade said. ‘We’ll take it. We all said in the huddle, our coaches said it. Sometimes when you’re in the moment — Dirk made a great move to get a little step on Chris. Obviously if we can go back and do it, we have grabbed him before he could get up.’ ‘He gave me a quick move, and at that point, I didn’t feel that I had leverage for the foul, because he was going into a shooting motion,’ Bosh said. ‘Like I say, it was just all bad defense for me.’”

@giogolo Hating Bron for his attitude is one thing, but I have to disagree that just adding solid role players for Wade would’ve made them just as good. Without Bron, I don’t think they’d be in the Finals. And while I’d hate having to log in for Slam, cosign Wayno. Don’t feed em, they’ll find something else to do.

    I agree with Telus Operator.

it was all about the odds. Dallas was +4.5 in game 2. Miami wanted to win but they wanted a cover too. They tried to trim the lead to 4 or less. it backfired.

    heat in five

  • Jose

God, As soon as Dallas gets a Win everyone switches to The Big D to win it all, Tuesday night eveyone was talkin 5 game series w/ MIA winning it(that be awesome, haha) Miami has proven it can win on the road, so this series split just makes this series more interesting

bringing in a guys heritage is low irrelevant and bordering on racism. but i understand youre just trolling but still, please lay off the culture insults. and i agree w/ you eboy lebron and boshs defense could be better but the play i was most disappointed in was during the possession after dirks 2, lebron decided on passing to wade even though chalmers had a pretty decent look

@ Eboy: I don’t mind you criticizing Coach Spo’s way with his team or whatever — though I’ve always respected your insights here — but I certainly don’t appreciate expressing your displeasure on him just because he’s Filipino. It’s like you’re saying we Filipinos are simpletons. That’s just not right….

Wow, these comments are toxic. Thought Slam was better than Dime; evidently not.

    Roy its saturday already…= )

People understand that this is supposed to be a conversation about basketball, right? That knowledge is as basic as understanding that misspelling words in an insult kind of defy the whole point of acting like you’re better than someone…Heat in 7.

miami in 6…!! when 316 is on its over…

  • muhammad

it was really one of the ugliest losses i ever watched 88-73 man i’ll never forget that all they wanted to do is attack the basket for couple of times only and then run the clock those offensive boards where a gift they should have tried to attack no got for a three hopefully they learned from what happened and they’ll win one in dallas, the only thing is that now dallas is confident that they can bounce back from any lead that’s a problem..Heat in 7

All I heard this week was how LeBron was so clutch, then in game 2, in the last 2 minutes, he goes 0-4. I’d say Scottie Pippen feels really smart right now. They pulled a choke job, no excuses needed. Dallas did’nt give up, even when the Heatles were already doing their victory dance, they knew the game wasn’t out of reach, and they showed everybody that the Heat are beatable. Now Dallas has all the momentum, and have the next 3 games at home. Could Miami go home in 5? That would make my whole summer, since my Celtics fizzled out. Go get em Dirk.
