New York Knicks Looking for Defense With Draft Pick

It’s the dawn of a new day in Gotham, as Mike D’Antoni and co. are putting a greater emphasis on the defensive side of the ball going forward. From Newsday: “After Ray Allen ran the Knicks guards ragged through endless screens in a first-round playoff sweep by the Celtics, the Knicks reacted by targeting a much-needed defensive stopper in the backcourt. By selecting Georgia Tech ‘s Iman Shumpert with the 17th overall pick in the NBA draft last night, the Knicks answered the need for defense and, perhaps, created the ability to turn Toney Douglas into a tradeable asset. The Knicks still are looking to acquire a true backup point guard or a big man before next season and, depending on the restrictions in the next salary-cap system, might be able to improve the roster only via trades … The Knicks have made focusing on defense a priority this offseason. One significant move will occur when Mike D’Antoni hires a defensive assistant coach for his staff. Former Nets coach Lawrence Frank is a possibility if he doesn’t land a head-coaching position.”

Iman Shumpert is a great defensive player thats athletic and plays both sides of the ball, this is def a smart pick 4 the knicks

Where does this leave Landry Fields tho? I guess he’s trade bait now because if Shumpert can provide some offense they’re basically the same player.

Besides the fact that it’s questionable that ANY player coming out of the NCAA or FIBA can play NBA defense as a rookie, the idea that one guy will change the mindset of a coach & team is ridiculous.

  • Dru

Clyde, the mere thought that drafting a defensive rookie is for anything other than to get better defensive players is asinine.

How can you rate a guy who hasn’t played a game in the league yet. Imagine if Landry Fields went in this spot. The knicks would still receive the same heat.

I’m saying, I get what they were trying to do. And Shumpert could be a good player.
But Kenneth Faried was still on the board.

  • RunNGun

See what happens when you let Isaiah Thomas run the show and not Donnie Walsh? The KNICKS FAILED miserably and horribly in this draft. The could have had MarShon Brooks or Kenneth Faried.

Watching Spike Lee trying to justify this pick was funny though.
And the look on his face when Heather Cox mistakenly called Landry Fields “Carl Landry” was priceless.

If we can sign a starting big man this off season, then this pick doesn’t look that bad. I won’t REALLY knock the pick until I see the kid play.

  • Wagers

Give Josh Harrellson time and he’ll be a great 7 or 8 man.

I’ve been a fan of Shumpert for a while. Big, strong, athletic guard with an NBA body. Can stand to work on his shooting, but he can get to the cup. With Carmelo and Amare the Knicks are going to be terrible defensively at the 3/4.

They need to sign McCamey out of Illinois. Whoever gets him is getting a great backup point guard.

They problem is the coach. they need a defensive coach. DEFENSE wins championship

yeah Faried would have worked great even Chandlet Parsons would have been good. I think the whole coach thing is standing in front of the team defense

Should’ve gone with Faried or Singleton at 17 and used the 45th pick on McCamey that provides a more complete squad, Shumpert may become a good player (I HOPE HE DOES!) but picking Faried/Singleton and McCamey certainl seems more logical
