Pat Riley Won’t Coach Again; Very Optimistic About the Heat

The boss down in Miami is sticking to the script, and doesn’t envision many changes going into next season. Instead, Riles puts the onus solely on the Big 3 to become better. From the Sun-Sentinel: “In a wide-ranging, informal media session at American Airlines arena, a relaxed Riley, in a buttoned-down blue pinstriped shirt, spoke at length about the 2010-11 team that came up short in the NBA Finals and where the franchise is headed. Of a possible return to coaching, Riley, 66, said, ‘No, I’m not going to do that.’ He paused, adding, ‘It doesn’t mean I don’t have the fire. But we’ve got a great young coach here.’ While Riley would not discuss specifics about Spoelstra’s coaching future, he said, ;Definitely we’re going to bring Erik back. As far as any long-term type of situation, that has not been discussed.’ … And Riley stressed that will be with the Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh intact. ‘There was never any thought, never any discussion of moving any of those guys,” he said. ‘I’m happy we have those three together.’ … While there was no proclamation about future championships, Riley stressed, ‘We are going to be multiple contenders. I have no problem saying that. It was a great year, trying to keep things in perspective. Obviously a disappointing ending. I know what everyone was expecting here, but it didn’t happen. I can’t wait for next season.’”

    I say it’s 50/50 whether they win if Spoelstra is still coaching. Honestly.

  • tRay

    Riles could manage the team better IMO but hey Spo helped get them to the Finals so I’m with Jukai it’s 50/50

    I wonder how many offers Spo would get from other treams looking for coaches; not that i want him out, i’m curious as to his value. Because i mean he got to the finals w/ the Big 3, but he kept Miami in the playoffs the previous years with basically Wade and role/developing players at the time. . .

    A great young coach? Come on Riley, don’t make me laugh. Pacquiao’s butler is far from a good coach let alone a great one.

    If they’re underachieving around christmas next season, the rumours will all start again. They probably won’t though, mainly because they’ll have meshed together after last season’s early growing pains.

    @Jtaylor
    actually Pacman, if not for his achievements would look more the butler role than Spo. Pacman is as human as us and his endevours in the Phil. are just as easily known as ur MJ there in the US. But he’s our hero and he has done way more good than ish..but clearly. Where he operates is just a stone throw away so…a heaving stone throw..a small,tiny pebble..but still.

    I co-sign Jose @ 3:18PM. though i acknowledge he has a lot of work to do, I mean a lot, I wud always respect a coach who got Wade’s confidence. I hope Riley can really help him though. Seriously.

    Rat Riley is a greasy scumbag who has flat out denied any interest in coaching in the past, then slides down his slick trail of hair grease to coach when he smells a chance to glorify his legacy with another ring. He’ll keep letting Spo do the heavy lifting of getting the team to come together, then as soon as they hit a speedbump, Rat will be coaching again. It’ll be a short-term gig. 3/4 of a season plus playoffs. Riley has attempted to cheat in the past and is a manipulative prick. The only way I’ll ever believe he won’t worm his way back into the coach’s seat is if he says he doesn’t have the passion for the game any more, and retires and severs all ties with the NBA.

    Jeez Mike, did Pat steal your wife or something? Please elaborate as to why you have a vendetta against this generally well-liked guy. I’m not for or against you, just curious.

    Spoelstra is Pacman’s butler because they’re both Filipino? That’s definitely not racist.

  • jflash

    JTaylor, you’re a dumb@$$
