Pistons Coaching Candidates: Mike Woodson … Isiah Thomas?

Mike Woodson is considered a leading candidate to replace John Kuester in Motown, but according to the Detroit News, it wouldn’t be wise to rule out Pistons legend Isiah Thomas: “There are some interesting names, though, as most believe the Pistons will go for a more experienced head coach this time around, after the failures of Kuester and Michael Curry (2008-09). Mike Woodson is probably the leading candidate at this point. Woodson was on Larry Brown’s staff in 2003-04 when the Pistons won the NBA title, along with Kuester. Woodson went on to take over a young team in Atlanta and took the Hawks to the precipice of the elite. More important than the Hawks’ steady improvement, though, was the development and maturity of his players. Woodson took a talented but raw Josh Smith, drafted straight out of high school, and although the two had their moments, Smith matured into a productive, if not consistent player … Isiah Thomas also could have a formal chat with Dumars. The former backcourt mates speak regularly, and during Thomas’ last visit to The Palace, during Dennis Rodman’s jersey retirement, he was in Dumars’ suite. Thomas’ issues have been well-documented during his time in New York, although it should be noted the Knicks were a mess well before he set foot in Madison Square Garden. Thomas does have experience in developing young players during his time as an executive in Toronto and as head coach in Indiana. While Thomas’ interest level isn’t known, he still feels a strong emotional bond with the team and the city of Detroit.”

Thomas was actually a pretty decent coach in Indy…but I’m really not thrilled with him or Woodson…

I love Zeke but damn if I want him to coach in Detroit. Mike Woodson and Kelvin Sampson would both be better.

yesssss higher Mike Woodson!! He’s is absolutely the only coach on the market with a history of turning a franchise around. Great basketball mind who should’ve never been fired in the first place

Draft isaiah Thomas from Washington and hire Isiah Thomas as the head coach!

I like Woodson, he should be hired for a young team. Would also be great for the Raptors.

You’re a good guy Tad. you deserve better.

Hire two time WNBA champ coach Bill Laimbeer.

If Isiah is hired by Detroit, he can’t ruin the team much more. But that was similar thinking when he was hired by New York.

Dear. Lord. In. Heavens. Please. Don’t. Do. It. Joe.

My point of view, as a Hawks fan who watched pretty much every game Woody coached… he leaves a LOT to be desired, particularly on the offensive end. I hope (for the sake of Detroit fans) you guys at least hire an offensive guru to pair up with Woody if he’s your new head coach. He needs the help. I’ve met the dude a few times. Class act. Nice guy. A gentleman. But I hated him as our coach. We’ve had some bad coaches in Atlanta these past 20 years (Lon Kruger? Bob Weiss? Terry Stotts?). Woodson was better than some of her predecessors, but I never felt he was suited to be a head man. I think he’d be a solid assistant (like when he was with Detroit), but I think he’s overmatched as a head coach. My memories of Woody? He was clueless on offense, enabled the Iso-Joe offense, had maddening substitution patterns (which should be nothing new in Motown since John Kuester was guilty of the same thing), called time-outs that killed our momentum, didn’t call time-outs when opponents were going on 10-0 runs, butted heads with Josh Smith (understandable but still), shaved his head, and shaved his eyebrows. Enjoy the Mike Woodson era, Detroit fans. I already feel your pain.

    What Myung said!

Help us, Bill Laimbeer. You’re our only hope.

I like Isaiah. It would be nice to see him back in the city he gave the most to. I think he would atleast get them back competitive.

  • Myung

Rigo, as a fan of a Central division rival of the Bulls, you WANT Detroit to hire Woody. Trust me. :)

  • Tim Pete

From a Knicks fan: DO IT JOE!!! It might mean he’s too busy to take phone calls from Dolan.

  • http://www.bulls.com Rigo Gonzalez

Yeah, I suppose I should want that, lol

Co-sign Myung. Woody is a stand up guy who will probably improve the Pistons considering what a mess they are now, but he is a frustrating coach to have after a point.

Isiah is great at developing young talent, and please note his astute talent at drafting talent. In that regard, his track record is excellent, and his devotion and commitment to the Pistons, along with Laimbeer, is unquestionable. With him and Dumars assessing talent, we won’t see anymore Darko’s, that’s for sure. Like the Wolverines, let’s keep it in the family. DAMN what all the haters say,Zeke loves the Pistons, and we love him. And he is motivated to succeed. Hire Zeke, and let’s return to the top.

MAKE IT HAPPEN WAL……Oh, wait, nevermind.
