Raptors Fired Head Coach Jay Triano

Toronto asked Jay Triano not to come back as head coach, but will keep him on staff as a consultant of sorts. From the Sun: “When Toronto’s dismal 22-60, last-place season concluded, it sure seemed like Jay Triano would return as head coach of the Raptors next season. ‘Clearly he did everything we asked this year. He deserves a lot of credit,’ said president/general manager Bryan Colangelo back in April. ‘All the players thought he did a great job considering the obstacles. He fared well. If I’m not back, he deserves consideration.’ After getting a contract extension a couple of weeks ago, Colangelo did give Triano consideration and in the end, decided it was time to reassign him to a different position within the organization. What changed? In a sentence: The pressure on Colangelo got more intense. He got his new deal, and with it, clearly came a mandate to get the Raptors on the right track sooner rather than later. No longer could he take a chance on Triano’s continued development. He needs a winner and he needs it now … ‘Jay fared well in a lot of areas but at the end of the day, my gut feeling of where this needs to go and how quickly we want to get there in terms of accelerating the process … I decided it was time to change the voice, change the leader at the helm,’ Colangelo said in a conference call.”

A shame. I liked Jay Triano more than I liked our entire roster.

Lol. Changing the coach isn’t going to change this team. That’s like putting a mod hood on a Neon. It’s still garbage.

  • ric

i wonder if we could have got mike brown if we fired him sooner? maybe we can beg rick adleman or find promising new talent on the sidelines, or we can just have pj carlisimo coach

    Notebook nick is on point.

people are sleeping on the Raptors, DeRozan has showed very good signs for a second year player, and if the new coach doesn’t play Bargnani at the 4, starts Bayless and actually preaches D then I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a quick turnaround.

Too bad Triano got moved into the consultant job. I think the Raps would show more improvement if he laced em up and replaced Calderon at the point.

  • andre anglais

People sleep on the raptors cause they’re Boring…
Also, why is the GM of a team making decisions based on what his gut tells him? That’s how we order a sandwich, Mr Colangelo, not a roster.

    Step 1: Complete.
    Step 2: Trade Bargnani.

  • ali

@andre anglais: u obviously dont know what a ‘gut feeling’ is

  • ali

@niQ: u are a genius my man, i dont think anyone thought of that…

please Rick please come coach the raps!

  • matt

next step: trade Bargnani+James Johnson for Posey + P.George

Triano is a good assistant coach and a good player coach, but he was in over his head as the head coach, and I’m sure he and the rest of the organization knew that. In a way I feel kinda sorry for the guy. I don’t think he was anything but Colangelo’s puppet and a Canadian figurehead/mascot, which backfired when they realized American players would rather not play for a “Canadian team”. He doesn’t have the clout to assert himself like a more established coach like JVG or Adelman or even Carlesemo would. There’s no doubt that Colangelo is going to hire a “big name” coach to replace him and give this team some sort of identity – I just hope he can surround the coach with players who can step up on D. Bargnani needs to go if this team is going to be anything but a mediocre treadmill team that continues to sell hope to fans.

@matt – Bargs and James Johnson are two guys who Colangelo has had man crushes on… I doubt they’d be packaged for Posey and Paul George. Add Rudy Gay to the mix and maybe and I would definitely approve. Imagine the jerseys they would sell during Toronto’s Gay Pride Parade?

Dummies are out in full force today.

Watching Bayless try and play point guard is almost as bad a watching ‘Drea try and play center.

  • B-Right

I liked Jay Triano, but this should have happened a long time ago. He never got the most out of his players, and the team needs someone who can do that.

  • Charles

Trade Calderon and Andrea. Can’t say they would get much in return. Surprised Jay got the boots, I thought Colangelo would be gone before him. They need to draft a PG. Hopefully Brandon Knight will still be around.

  • Sparker

i was very excited when colangelo took over the raptors, but he has taken a team that was a solid 5th to 8th place finisher in the east and made it worse every year. the raps were a scrappy, can-do bunch of guys that regularly surprised more athletic teams only a few years ago… now they have no identity and no core. it seriously blows for anyone who’s a fan.

  • Exile

It does blow for the fans. The prob (like notebook nick stated) is not the coach. The Raps are not in a good place (minus DeRozan and Davis)due to not only poor talent, but pieces that do not compliment each other and a rotating head coach job. Too many things to fix for me to get my head around… but am still a Raps fan (until playoffs hit and I am forced to pick up the Celtics or Bulls).

The biggest problem with Colangelo’s tenure as GM has been his vision going in of developing a European-style team populated largely by European talent. It seemed like a good idea when he took the reigns: Darko wasn’t really a bust yet, the European talent pool was full of promise, and Toronto is a huge, multi-cultural city that could appeal to Europeans in a way it didn’t to Americans. Years later there hasn’t been a truly great European since Pau Gasol, and Bargnani actually statistically costs his team more games than any other starter in the league.

Raptors should try to get Rick Adelman. I’m not sure he’d want to coach a young, developing work-in-progress like the Raptors, but that might be even less stressful than coaching a contender with expectations.
I think Adelman would be PERFECT for the Raptors–these young guys would thrive under his offense. Rick coaches the best offense in the league and, with the right pieces, he can get his guys to defend as well.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

@ Boing: Not really. This season Bayless showed some promise in the few games he started over Calderon. He routinely put up around 25 points and 8 assists in those couple of games.

  • phenom

Under Bryan Colangelo the Raptors become Italy’s FIFA team with their coaching staff and their roster. This could never work in the NBA. We need to develop NBA players and have NBA coaching staff. Not FIFA staff. It’s time to move Bryan Colangelo so that Tornto can have a true NBA team that can compete for championship.
