Report: Kings Trade Omri Casspi, First Round Pick for Cavs’ JJ Hickson

We’ve got few details beyond this tweet, but it looks like the Kings are adding to their frontcourt, while the Cavs are providing Kyrie Irving with some assistance on the wing. Via Marc Spears:

And…. watch the Kings bubble. Can’t overstate how hyped I am. Reke, Jimmer, JJ Hickson, Cousins? Chilll. Reke’s coming for the West crown…

  • Jose

I was wondering what was gonna happen to Hickson with Tristan on board now. . . Well Doesn’t sound like a bad move, but i think they should’ve given up a 2nd rounder instead. . .

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, I knew Hickson needed to go. Even before Thompson showed up, Hickson looked like he was having a really hard time with Byron Scott and adjusting to his Princeton offense.
The Kings will at least be fun to watch with Tyreke, Cousins, Hickson and Fredette. Don’t know if they’ll win many games though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Good choice turning down Amar’e Stoudemire to keep Hickson, only to trade him for Omri Casspi and a draft pick. could have had LeBron and Amar’e at the same time….but two high lottery picks are nice too i guess hahah

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

Kings will be dope to watch.

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

Kings gonna make the Playoffs if there’s no lockout (*sigh*). Why do we forget Reke’s company rookie year was Jordan, Oscar Robertson, and LeBron. He’s virtually unguardable. And Cousins is a top-4 center already. Hyped.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Protection specifics on pick going from Kings to Cavs: Protected 1-to-14 in 2012, 1-to-13 in 2013, 1-to-12 in 2014, 1-to-10 from 2015-2017 – What a lose lose situation for Cleveland. Why the f*ck did they do this trade.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

They can score, the question is can they defend? None of their projected starters are notable defenders. Fun to watch like the Warriors but still lose at the end.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Wayno

Wow, the absolute best they’ll get is an 11th pick in 4 years…sucky trade for Cleveland. They could have gotten alot more for Hickson.

  • Jeremy

Kings are REALLY trying to gets the fans excited, this is awesome for Sacramento. Congrats to the management for taking that leap.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Man!! The caves are my home team but they just can’t make good deals! I think Omari is a good talent and plays hard but he has very little potential to be a major impact player. Cavs should just sell all the older players and start that long road to recovery like the Thunder did… It pays off

  • Showtime

HahaHa…Cavs org are such losers…Def worse ran franchise. How a year ago u don’t trade hickson for Amare’ but give him up for Casspi an averge disgruntle shooter.Hickson a being block huh …And then let Sacramento get away giving you a PROTECTED PICk, you basically have NO PICK lol…& you guys ask why u keep catching L”S

  • rudy

@Eldon hol up, hol up, whoa der! I love the kings as well, but I think you might be getting a head of yourself. Playoffs? Maybe. Cousins a top five center? Not just yet.

  • Patzilla

The protection on that pick makes this trade god awful. Before the draft I had the utmost faith in Chris Grant. Now not so much. Jesus I’m shocked

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

The only thing Omari can pass is the water bottles to kyrie and baron… Maybe the cabs will figure out how to run a team and make a trade to get rid of the mess we call Jamison and Anthony Parker… Yeah right who would be dumb enough to pick up those contracts!

  • LA Huey

Kings and Wolves are going to be league pass darlings

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

Please name me 5 better centers… After Dwight and Brook I have a tough time naming any. Cousins is an immovable object with range and a soft touch. You’re not supposed to be able to have a face-up game when you’re 6-11, 270! With the right mindset, he’s a perennial All-Star.

  • cavsfan27

To nbk and all other misinformed people out there:
Hickson for Amare was NEVER, I repeat, NEVER really on the table. Both Steve Kerr (Suns GM at the time) and Danny Ferry (Cavs GM at the time) have confirmed this. If you’re going to comment, please comment responsibly.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

nbk beat me to the Amare trade mention… lol

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

On another note, both Hickson and Cousins are quite turnover-prone…

  • http://basketballjunction.blogspot.com/ Joseph V

I like the way the Kings are going, and Casspi will do nothing for the Cavs. This just means added pressure on Kyrie Irving’s young shoulders. Poor guy, Cleveland fans are gonna hate him if he’s anything less than LeBron.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

@Eldon. Bogut, Nene, Kaman (healthy), Pau/Marc Gasol, Bynum…does Al Jefferson count?

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Well then Cleveland fans are going to hate him.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Bogut, Tyson Chandler, Al Horford, Andrew Bynum, Chris Kaman.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Nene, Dwight, Al Jefferson, Joakim Noah, Marc Gasol. That’s 10

  • http://slamonline.com Eldon Khorshidi

@niQ, i’ll give you Bogut. And that leaves Cousins at 4. Nene and Kaman no way, definitely not going forward. Pau is a PF (but Cousins did sauce him this year) and I take Cousins over Marc any day. Al Jefferson might as well still be in high school.

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

On another note, based on how Brook played last year, I wouldn’t consider him top 5. Not even top 10 considering all the names that were just mentioned.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Cavs should trade form Capt Jack then blind fold him and drop him off in the Cleveland slums without a map… That’s well worth his giant contract :)

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

DeMarcus will be better than Kaman next year.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

And maybe Al Jefferson. I’ll give you 8 of 10.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Your talking about how good they are at basketball right now. Not how good they will be in a few years. Potential wise it’s Dwight and Demarcus, but that’s potential. Not actual skill and effectiveness. He is without a doubt a worse everyday center today then all 10 guys I listed.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Nbk if you knew what was going on you wouldn’t have Horford on here as a center… He plays way out of position and has little impact on that ATL team. Josh, Joe , Jamal could make the playlets without him. D. Cousins is 10th on my top 10 list

  • D12FSU

so 2 seasons ago, the cavs were unwilling to trade Hickson for Amare’ because he had too much upside…but now they trade him for Casspi?!?! (who I really like btw)..but wtf is going on in cleveland

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Doesn’t matter if he is or isn’t playing out of position, he plays Center. And he led the team in rebounds, was 3rd in assists, and 1st in PER. PER the stat most commonly used to figure out which player in the “best” on a given team.

  • http://Slamonline.com LakeShow

Ok if we are going by out of position centers too then consider Amare… He played alot of out of position center in PHX. Or dirk had to play out of position center few years back. Horford isn’t a good fit it ATL is all I’m saying I like the dude

  • http://Slamonline.com LakeShow

WTF?? How did you post that @lakeshow?! I had that exact thing written and went to post it and said duplicate message?! WTF?!

  • http://redoftoothandclaw.ca/ niQ

    @Lakeshow. or Duncan =D lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

When someone says name 5 centers in the league today who are better then Demarcus Cousins, then you name 5 players the played primarily Center this most recent season. And your the person posting as Lakeshow genius.

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    CK really hates Jack

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Wow how did I get logged on as lakeshow?! That’s messed up bro. But yes if you consider out of position centers then Horford wouldn’t even make this list neither would cousins or kaman

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Nah I hate his ego. If me and him were on the same team inwould love the guy cuz he really does defend his team mate ( ex. Indina at Detroit brawl) but as a fan Jack is not a desirable player

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Do you know what Primarily means? When a player primarily plays a position that is the position that player should be and is classified as for that season. Sure there are hordes of PF’s that played Center occasionally who are probably better then those guys, but they aren’t Centers and they rarely play the position. (Except Amar’e who splits the time, 50/50, and is worse then horrendous defending centers, so I didn’t classify him as such. Especially considering he didn’t play Center at all over the last couple months of the season, it was Jared Jeffries & Ronnie Turiaf splitting the time)

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

    Start at Center*

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Dirk and Tim Duncan played long period of times at center. I think Tim was amazing at both spots but dirk isn’t really physically big enough to handle centers like Dwight.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Dirk played little to no center this season at all, it was all Chandler and Haywood. Duncan did and didn’t. But he wasn’t that good this year anyway. I honestly don’t even know why your bringing Dirk into this conversation, do you even know what the subject is about?

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

This kid has obviously never commented on Slam before. One of the joys of Slam is no password and multiple IP name swaps in their system. It’s good fun. We all enjoy it. You get to know all sorts of great personal things abut other people lol. Top 10 centers in order 1. Howard, 2. Andrew Bogut, 3. Andrew Bynum, 4. Nene, 5. Tyson Chandler, 6. Chris Kaman, 7. Marc Gasol, 8. Demarcus Cousins, 9. Brook Lopez, 10. Roy Hibbert. Greg Monroe soon to be up there. I’m probably missing someone.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Dirk is the answer to anything. And yeah top 10 centers you dick. How bout you and Stephan Jackson go fondle eachother.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Thats me with the Top 10 list. Slam. Seriously tho common. Ya’ll suck at this website commenting thing.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Centers – And you seem obsessed with Stephen Jackson, you have commented about him on like 3 or 4 different articles. Might want to see someone about that.

  • brando

Man that’s funny saying Cousins is even a top 10 center RIGHT NOW.

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

Cousins is a Top 10 center.

  • angus

man look at all these up and coming teams, stupid lockout! clips, kings, warriors, and wolves gunna battle for playoffs all year gunna be fun

  • http://TeachMehowtoDougie(Notarealsite)) Baller Town

Good moves for the Sac Town, They already had Tyreke, jimmer, Marcus Thorton, and others in the backcourt. JJ is a good defender so says this link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqG1b5xVC3w

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

I like the trade. Here’s a few thoughts.
    1. I’ve seen JJ’s ceiling. He won’t even be an all star in this league. I’m pretty much sold on him. I mean, we’re the Cavs! C’mon, he has the world to show up on this team and the best he could do is 13 and 8, a lot of turnovers with those ever wet hands and make a few dumb decisions. Great. But I wish him the best in Sacto.
    2. I’ve always liked Casspi. He would fit great in Scott’s offense imo. He’s gonna be solid I believe. Not a star but can be more valuable in the long run. Can shoot, can run, and a whole lot of ball IQ compared to JJ.
    3. I’ll grade this as a B. I’ve been lobbying to trade JJ since. I thought we could’ve gotten more or at least make the pick unprotected (damn..) but at least were getting a player that could be more useful in the future in exchange.

  • http://www.slamonline.com J

    Just to be clear.
The Amare-Hickson trade falldown was not Chris Grant’s fault. He wasn’t the GM back then. Ferry is. And to most reports it was the Suns who backed out on the trade. Sure there were second thoughts on the Cavs part to trade Hickson at that time, but it was Phoenix who didn’t let Amare go. Steve Kerr isn’t stupid like that.

  • http://slamonline.com AlbertBarr

I like this trade mainly because JJ doesn’t need the ball i his hands or plays run for him to be effective. That will be important with reke, cousins and jimmer on the court. WTF do we do with thorton? Keep him and see if we can mannage possesions like the griz or trade for a gritty defender off ball player?

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

I like this trade for both sides; and for Omri, should be able to land the starting spot and have a bigger part of the offence. If they choose to go SF with their 2012 pick then he remains a great bench player who brings a spark with his hustle.

  • Simmy Sosa

Cavaliers are f@*king up left and right. Why would you take a PG when you just traded for one? Why not take Williams first overall and B. Knight with the 4th? Williams is ready to dominate at the 3 right now. They just got less athletic and less fun to watch.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The thing about Cousins is, even though he’s not there just yet, he has a higher ceiling than almost any center in the NBA right now. This has probably already been said.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Also, I wonder if the Kings are going to start Jimmer right away over Marcus Thornton. I think they will, even though Marcus Thornton is the best damn scorer they have on that team, and deserves to start somewhere else. Maybe they’ll deal him to a team that needs him (even though the Kings kind of need him still…). A logjam of guards does nothing for your team, case in point: The Pistons.

  • Danny_W_UK

I think the Starting 5 for the Kings will be ‘Reke, and Thornton. Salmons and JJ at the Forward spots, and Cousins at the 5. Jimmer (Mark Price 2K11?) will be 8th or 9th man, behind Donte Greene, JT, and ‘Cisco. Honeycutt will sit for a month or two, then go to the NBDL for a while, but could be a star some day. Isiah Thomas (Ronnie Price 2K11?) will do just fine, but in very limited minutes, behind Pooh Jeter.
For Jimmer to start, at least before the All Star Break, he’d need a couple of injuries further up the rotation.
Of course, that is, if we have a season…..

  • Tony

as a kings fan i am excited over this trade , glad the cav’s are happy with casspi , dum deal for cavs a protected pick at best 2017 second round guarenteed , Casspi is much worse a player than J.J Hickson with alot of upside. casspi is a poor defender , ok rebouder , stuggles at the FT line , shoots the 3 fairly well but inconistently and he struggled to get playing time because he did not perform well and complained about it. overall he is a great guy , and i wish him well but J.J hickson has alot of upside and i think Sacramento got the better deal. not complaining at all. I love it. Welcome J.J Hickson! time to bring out the cowbells , he is going to love it in Sacramento. GO KINGS!

  • Tony

i dont think Isaiah Thomas will be playing behind Pooh jeter. i think its going to be the other way around.

  • Riggs

Al thornton was kicking *ss for the kings at the end of last season with tyreke hurt. He should not be traded and should be the leader of the bench squad. That would be instant offense right there.
