Ricky Rubio Officially Joining the Timberwolves

by Sam Riches / @sam_riches

After being selected with the fifth overall pick in 2009, Ricky Rubio is finally bringing his game to the NBA.

His presence will immediately strengthen Minnesota’s backcourt, who are in dire need of an adept point guard. The Timberwolves will also be seeking some additional talent with their number two selection in next week’s draft.

From the Star Tribune:

“The 20-year-old Spanish guard ended two years of speculation on Friday when he said, ‘I have finally decided to start the journey’ to the NBA.

The Timberwolves also issued a press release confirming that the team had signed him to a multi-year contract, and have announced a Tuesday press conference in the Twin Cities.

‘This is a day our organization and our fans have been eagerly awaiting from the moment we drafted him, and I couldn’t be more pleased to welcome Ricky to Minnesota,’ said David Kahn, Timberwolves president of basketball operations. ‘Ricky’s skill set and feel for the game have made him one of the best young players in Europe for six years now, and at age 20 he’s still a young player with a lot of upside. I expect Ricky to enjoy a long and successful career here in Minnesota.’”

His venture will not be easy, as he attempts to overcome his detractors and turn around the fortunes of a struggling Minnesota franchise that posted a League worst 65 losses.

Rubio will also try to rebound from perhaps the most disappointing season of his professional career. His scoring average dropped to 6.5 points per game, while shooting 39 percent from the floor and just a shade over 20 percent from behind the arc. His assist average also fell to 3.5 per game.

After becoming the youngest player in the history of the Spanish ACB League, Rubio’s international career has largely been a success, including a silver medal with the Spanish national team at the 2008 Olympics and being crowned the best point guard in the ACB League in 2008 and 2010.

I’m pretty sure there is goaltending in europe..
you’re right about the clogging zone tho because there isn’t a defensive 3 sec violation.

no you can take the ball out of the cylinder in Fiba rules checkit out thats why there was some talk of trying this rule out in the D League next yr. NBA and FIBA rules different….same here in Australia when you play in a league here 99 percent of teams play paint clogging zone so the shooters easier to score but the smaller guards who want to get to the basket have to find other ways to score, unlike man d when you beat your guy its easier.

Looking forward to finally seeing him play here. Doesn’t matter if he’s going to produce or not – I just wanna see him play.

So where does the 4 other PGs on this team fit? Not one of them is ready to lead this team to a .500 season and Kevin Love and B Easy really need a bonafide PG…

Yes, I’m sure the former Defensive Player of the Year in the ACB, the league which is known to be second only to the NBA, will be abused on defense constantly throughout his career. Totally.

6.5ppg and 3.5app in the euro league? uh pretty sure any high school varsity pg could take his talents to euro and get those numbers, not saying he’s going to be a bust but what are people seeing in that?

    ^^^
    Jeremy Tyler.

His new nickname will Be “Ricky Road Kill” cuz the top ten pgs will murder him. Does anyone want to see him versus Rose? Thank God for him, most of the better pgs are in the east.

Most of the top-10 PGs murder everyone. Why is there so much f*cking hate for this kid?

    Jukai knows what’s up.

I really hope he lives up to the hype. I like the kid so far from what I’ve seen on youtube. Europe bball is different from the NBA, so with that said Rubio might struggle from the start. If he can adjust quickly then it’ll be much easier for him later on his career. So far he’s part of the big boy league now lets see what he can do next season.

Its great that he’s going to the NBA and all…but what is Minnesota gonna do with Johnny Flynn? Hands down Minnesota made the stupidest draft choices, picking two PG back to back.
Theirs a reason Rubio is just coming to the NBA people, he’s already maximized all of his European potential and is going to try to give the NBA a shot. Even though he didn’t and I believe still doesn’t want to have a career in Minnesota.

This kid will be a bust. Is shot is not great, his decision making is not great and his defence is not great. BUST!

  • zack

he’s a softee he needs to be NBA TOUGH not EURO LEAGUE TOUGH guys like RON ARTEST OR NATE ROBINSON will drain him mentally and physically……..he needs to put on 30lbs of mass or so…..chest,shoulders,back,buttocks cause its going to get a lot of pounding, elbows, banging….THIS IS THE NBA….ONLY THE STRONGEST SURVIVE
