Dale Ellis: ‘I’m the Best Shooter of All Time’

Dale Ellis, the former NBA sharpshooter gives plenty of credit to Ray Allen for breaking Reggie Miller’s three-point record last season, but he still believes that he’s the greatest long-range bomber ever. From the Boston Globe: “Ask any shooter, active or retired, and they will tell you they can get up off the couch and drain threes. That confidence is almost mandatory with great shooters, according to Ellis. ‘I’m the best shooter of all time,’ he said. ‘I know that from the jump. I set the standard. I gave them something to shoot for. I was the first player in the history of the game to get 1,000 3-pointers. To be able to play on that level, you have to have that attitude about yourself. You can say it’s arrogant or cocky or whatever, but that’s OK. There’s no way you can compete without it. There’s no way you can excel without that confidence level.’”

There’s just two simple words that he missed out and no one could argue then: “One of”.

Good call on Hubert Davis there, was so good that Pippen had to resort to fouling him.

Did Kerr ever take a shot that wasn’t wide opened?

i think x47 is one of the only commenters on here who is actually processing what was said. Dale never said he was the best scorer, and also never clarified what type of shooter he was talking about.

also i dont know how many of you actually play ball, but if you ever go into a game thinking that the opposition is better than you then you have already lost the battle. all the best players believe that they are better than their opponents. in the same way, dedicated shooters have to believe they are the best shooters otherwise what is the point of them being on the court.

Best ever not sure..but his (Threes) were wet back in the days ,I would say possibly top five, he was shooting a respectable 41% in his career.

It’s funny to read most of these comments. He thinks he’s the best shoot of all time, but he says that that’s the mentality a shooter needs. His statement conveys more about the shooting mentality than the actual proclamation itself. Shooters HAVE to have this idea. I’m sure there’s 5 guys in the league RIGHT NOW who think the same about themselves as Dale Ellis does.
Anywho, Dale Ellis’ shot was so beautiful…there’s gotta be some youtube clips of his game. And someone mentioned Dell Curry’s shot release. As a Raps fan, I saw him shoot/hit shots faster than anyone I’ve ever seen shoot/hit. Dell Curry was an absolute joy to watch.

And for those who didn’t see him play….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc&feature=related

What about Glen Rice, he was definetly a bomber . . Or mitch richmond, and even J.kidd who by the way deleted all speculations or him not being a good shooter by becoming one of the best shooters in NBA history. What about Jeff Hornacek ? I mean dont get me wrong Dale Ellis had a cannon back in the day but the best, hmmmmmm nahhhhhh . What about ALL the Barry’s. Rick, Jon, and Brent were all great shooters. If I had to make a list of shooters here is what it would be.

Set shot: Jason kidd if he set its wet.
Pressure 3: Dell curry, release is sooo fast
    In need 3: Glen Rice
Catch and shoot: Peja , maybe the best catch and shooter or Kyle K.

but my ultimate shooter(s) has to be Ray Allen, Reggie Miller
simply put they do all of those things. Oh yeaa cant forget about Jason Kapono who has the Nba record for 3point %.

Here is how it is going down:

Ray Allen is the best pure shooter of all time.

Reggie Miller is the best clutch pure shooter of all time.

  • Henry

Dale Ellis had a beautiful shot. He is probably the purest shooter that I have ever seen. He was a marksman from the arc!

  • Yesse

He’s wrong, i’m the greatest shooter of all time!

Noteable mention to Stephen Smith in a hawks uniform.
