Dale Ellis: ‘I’m the Best Shooter of All Time’

Dale Ellis, the former NBA sharpshooter gives plenty of credit to Ray Allen for breaking Reggie Miller’s three-point record last season, but he still believes that he’s the greatest long-range bomber ever. From the Boston Globe: “Ask any shooter, active or retired, and they will tell you they can get up off the couch and drain threes. That confidence is almost mandatory with great shooters, according to Ellis. ‘I’m the best shooter of all time,’ he said. ‘I know that from the jump. I set the standard. I gave them something to shoot for. I was the first player in the history of the game to get 1,000 3-pointers. To be able to play on that level, you have to have that attitude about yourself. You can say it’s arrogant or cocky or whatever, but that’s OK. There’s no way you can compete without it. There’s no way you can excel without that confidence level.’”

Who the hell is Dale Ellis?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick the Quick

Keith Bogans and Deshawn Stevenson painfully disagree.

Okay Dale, sure you are. Now back to the couch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

No seriously, who is Dale Ellis?

  • Drexyl1973

He was a GREAT clothesline 3 point shooter. He’s in the top 10.

  • cramzy

whoa, dont front on Dale Ellis! lol Dude dropped 25 ppg three times. Its not like he some scrub poppin off.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I’m not fronting on him, I’ve never heard of him ’til now.

  • Jake

He played for the supersonics in the 90s, had a sick flat top and could shoot from anywhere.

  • BAWSE

He was one of the best shooters but dude is delusional. No team EVER came into a game saying we have to double team Dale and we dont care if someone else beats us. Dale made some great shots but was a role SHOOTER!! He needs to cope with that.

  • James

Yeah, comparing Dale Ellis’ shooting ability to Keith Bogans or DeShawn Stevenson is disrespectful. He had a much better career than those guys have had.

He’s closer to being a less wealthy man’s Ray Allen. Those other two guys are like a homeless man’s version of Dale Ellis.

  • Lz – Cphfinest3

The best shooter I ever saw was Dell Curry, fastest release ever. Ray Allen should be ranked 1. by the numbers and longevity, but Dale Ellis is not far behind. That is my top 3 in whatever order you want to put them (Reggie Miller complaining in a squeeky voice somewhere).

dale ellis was nice. plus he played while he had gray hair and always looked pissed.

  • http://nba.com GP23

Ray Allen is the best shooter of all time.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

BlackPhantom, really thou? You gonna sit there and act like you don’t know who Dale Ellis is. Revelations like that requires a 3 month ban from visiting a basketball website.

  • Kyle

There were times when Tom Chambers was a better shooter than he was, If he’s the best SHOOTER of all time, why was he only a 78 percent freethrow shooter? Dale Ellis had 4 really great seasons, made the all-star team ONCE, played seemingly forever, averaged half a rebound more than Steve Nash for his career even though he’s a 6’8 forward, and never commanded double teams. Peja, Nash, Allen, Dirk, Bird, Price, Miller, Drazen Petrovic, Mullin and a few others are better shooters than he was. He had four double doubles in his career despite being 6’8… his game basically relied on his quick catch and shooting ability after running around screens. For the Sonics, Chambers was the guy who would take over in fourth quarters usually.

His only great “clutch” season was in 1987 when he, Chambers and X-Man upset the playoffs and lost in the Western Conference Finals to the Lakers who won it all. They were swept but only the fourth game wasn’t close. Chambers always played well against the Lakers though since he was part of the Suns team where he and KJ upset Magic. Oddly enough, Ellis never talked sh!t during his career, but now he does years after he retires, lol.

  • MrSuper

Dale had the best shouting technique I had ever seen.

  • MrSuper

    ^shooting (sorry)

  • robb

    @Kyle good comment.

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

He was a beast on Live. Lol.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

He may not be the best of all time.
But, it is arguable, depending on how one judges who is who…

  • http://aol.com Run”N’Gun219

hell yeah he was a beast on live. And he coulnd miss on NBA Jams either. Ill put him top 5 behind Peja,Ray Allen,Reggie, and Dell Curry

  • http://aol.com Run”N’Gun219

    ** Could’nt**

  • dma

Wesley and Chuck Person had nice form too. Ellis was deadly though. Not sure about all time.

  • Ronald

    I rather have Steve Kerr.

  • David J. Moore, IV

I would have to politely disagree with Dale Ellis

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    1. Bird
    2. Reggie
    3. Ray
    4. Craig Hodges
    5. Steve Kerr
    6. Mark Price
    7. Steve Nash
    8. Dale Ellis
    9. Chris Mullin
    10. Dirk
List is mostly based strictly without really delving into heavy contemplation or pondering.

  • hambone

Dale has the same dealer as pip

  • http://aol.com Run”N’Gun219

The Philosopher IM TAKING AT LEAST 4OF THE PEOPLE YOU NAMED OFF THAT LIST. No way dirk, hodges, bird, kerr make the top 10 list

  • Jamaal87

such a beast on the ye olde live games!

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @Run”N’Gun219:
Have you ever seen Craig Hodges shoot?…
And, Kerr has all time percentages on stages that count.
In the hottest of spotlights, playing next to the one of the greatest and most intense competitors in sport. Pure pressure.
    Dirk.
The tallest player ever to win the shootout.
    All timer.
    I won’t get into Bird.
    Not yet, anyway. lol

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Dale Ellis shore could shoot it. Mark Price, Wesley Person, Ray Allen, Steve Kerr, Chris Mullin, & Kyle Korver all probably feel the same way.

  • T-Money

The best virtual basketball player ever was Kevin Garnett in Live 2001. We actually had a rule that you couldn’t play with the Wolves – he would not miss, ever.

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ 1982

Dale Ellis could/can shoot, I won’t doubt that. But no. Just no.

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@JTaylor……you do know how young I am, right? I know alot of NBA history but I don’t necessarily know Dale Ellis. From what I looked up it isn’t that much to know anyway. How is it so mandatory to know a one-time All Star? C’mon now I don’t come from a family of SuperSonics fans. Where the hell does it say “You must know Dale Ellis to talk basketball”?

  • http://www.slamonline.com/ 1982

And also, GOAT isn’t a self-proclaimed title. If no one’s ever said it about you, you probably shouldn’t bring it up.

  • http://aol.com Run”N’Gun219

No Doubt i know who Craig Hodges is. I was a die hard bulls fans growing. And i stayed in the region so i seen all the game. Dont get me wrong at all. He had a stroke but not top 10 stroke. and kerr would be in my top 15. Bird only hit 260 3′s so he is not even close in my book. And so what about dirk being tall. You are going to tell me he has a better 3 pts shoot than Peja( who is 6’10) No Way at all

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Taylor, Phantom:
It isn’t that serious. Both of you guys do your thing.
    In my opinion…

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Peja isn’t clutch.
    At all.
Never was, and never will be.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

And again, it’s all about one’s cup of tea, you know?

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

LMAO, This year’s Finals proved that Peja isn’t clutch

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Peja is a better shooter in-game then Hodges ever was. Better %, way way way more attempts. Standing still shooting a set-shot though, it’s anyone’s guess.

  • JL

good list philosopher. I wouldn’t put dale at 8 cuz then where does dell curry go. He’s such a good shooter even his sons are good!

  • John Wall Jr

Dale Ellis …. sitcho Ass down !!

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

Ray Allen is a better all round player, but I think Dale has to be in the conversation for best shooter.

  • http://Philosophervision@blogspot.com The Philosopher

  • x47

He said he was the best shooter but he is not naming the categories that are available..

Is he the best pure shooter, clutch shooter, percentage wise or what. It leaves a lot up for interpretation.

But I will say this, if we are talking about shooters with pure strokes I would have to say Dale is definately in the top 3.

People that want to say all this about double teams, 3 point contests and what not. 1 Peja never took over a game but he is mentioned as a top shooter.

If you were to line up all the shooters in the NBA and let them shoot at their high point I would say IMHO…

Reggie, Kerr, Dale, Nash, Price, House, Curry,Chuck Person, Abdul Rauf and Horry would probably finish in the top shooters, yes Bird, Allen and some others were left off but just pure shooting to see who could hit the most in a row I would put this 10 against anyone

  • HAMMER

Im surprised Dale would say this. He always had a quiet demeanor and I haven’t heard from him n years. Luved watching him play. He is tho a top 10 shooter, but not the best.

  • MattM

The greatest Live (2000 I think) shooter I ever experienced was Hubert Davis. Dribble it down, shoot a leaner 3, and it was 3 points on the board.

  • HAMMER

How bout George McCloud? Or 3-D?

  • OneStep

There’s just two simple words that he missed out and no one could argue then: “One of”.

  • http://www.walshsportsblog.com Darren

Good call on Hubert Davis there, was so good that Pippen had to resort to fouling him.

  • http://dsjfklf.com Jukai

Did Kerr ever take a shot that wasn’t wide opened?

  • T Bone

i think x47 is one of the only commenters on here who is actually processing what was said. Dale never said he was the best scorer, and also never clarified what type of shooter he was talking about.

also i dont know how many of you actually play ball, but if you ever go into a game thinking that the opposition is better than you then you have already lost the battle. all the best players believe that they are better than their opponents. in the same way, dedicated shooters have to believe they are the best shooters otherwise what is the point of them being on the court.

  • KBJ

Best ever not sure..but his (Threes) were wet back in the days ,I would say possibly top five, he was shooting a respectable 41% in his career.

  • JoeMaMa

It’s funny to read most of these comments. He thinks he’s the best shoot of all time, but he says that that’s the mentality a shooter needs. His statement conveys more about the shooting mentality than the actual proclamation itself. Shooters HAVE to have this idea. I’m sure there’s 5 guys in the league RIGHT NOW who think the same about themselves as Dale Ellis does.
Anywho, Dale Ellis’ shot was so beautiful…there’s gotta be some youtube clips of his game. And someone mentioned Dell Curry’s shot release. As a Raps fan, I saw him shoot/hit shots faster than anyone I’ve ever seen shoot/hit. Dell Curry was an absolute joy to watch.

  • JoeMaMa

And for those who didn’t see him play….. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E80RGtvZQqc&feature=related

  • http://slamonline.com Gee Money

What about Glen Rice, he was definetly a bomber . . Or mitch richmond, and even J.kidd who by the way deleted all speculations or him not being a good shooter by becoming one of the best shooters in NBA history. What about Jeff Hornacek ? I mean dont get me wrong Dale Ellis had a cannon back in the day but the best, hmmmmmm nahhhhhh . What about ALL the Barry’s. Rick, Jon, and Brent were all great shooters. If I had to make a list of shooters here is what it would be.

Set shot: Jason kidd if he set its wet.
Pressure 3: Dell curry, release is sooo fast
    In need 3: Glen Rice
Catch and shoot: Peja , maybe the best catch and shooter or Kyle K.

but my ultimate shooter(s) has to be Ray Allen, Reggie Miller
simply put they do all of those things. Oh yeaa cant forget about Jason Kapono who has the Nba record for 3point %.

  • George

Here is how it is going down:

Ray Allen is the best pure shooter of all time.

Reggie Miller is the best clutch pure shooter of all time.

  • Henry

Dale Ellis had a beautiful shot. He is probably the purest shooter that I have ever seen. He was a marksman from the arc!

  • Yesse

He’s wrong, i’m the greatest shooter of all time!

  • BBaller

Noteable mention to Stephen Smith in a hawks uniform.

  • http://SLAM Buddy C.

I went to high school with dale. He was an outstanding shooter, and was a great NBA player. There was not a better high school player in the entire state of georgia! lol dale!
