Dwight Howard Would ‘Never’ Join the Miami Heat

While attending Comic-Con in San Diego to promote a new animated series he’s starring in, Dwight was asked about the possibility of joining LeBron and ‘em. Howard isn’t a fan of the idea, at all. From ESPN: “They want to know if he’ll leave the Magic when he becomes a free agent in July 2012 — and whether he’d look good in a Heat, Lakers or Rockets jersey. He said he’s been asked ‘a million times’ about his future since the end of the season. But for now, Howard is having fun off the court — including doing the show and exploring other entertainment opportunities — and looking forward to a busy summer of travel, camps and enjoying life … What about the Lakers? ‘That’s everybody’s question,’ he told the ‘Kick’ audience. ‘I am wearing purple … but that’s Rock’s outfit.’ The Heat? ‘Never.’ Stay with the Magic or leave for free agency? ‘At this point, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I’m just enjoying life and taking advantage of being young and being able to travel and do the things that I’ve always wanted to do.’ Will he consider playing overseas if the NBA lockout drags on? ‘Yeah, I don’t want to just sit around and do nothing. That’s just a waste. There’s no telling when the NBA season’s going to start, so if I’m just sitting at home and one day it decides to pop back up and I’m not ready, I’m going to look bad.’”

Damn, Comic-Con, no love for the Bulls?
Anyways, they could never afford Howard, James, Bosh and Wade.

  • robb

    Lakers.

  • O

Well, at least ONE player isn’t hoppin’ on the Heat bandwagon. But he is going to the Lakers.

  • EJ

    Lakers

  • Jay Cutler

What a stupid question. The Heat won’t be able to afford him anyway once the new salary rules are in place.

What next? Do Slam’s professional internet commenters want to play highstakes poker against Bill Gates?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

I could see Howard wanting to play for the Lakers, no doubt.
But why would it be the best choice?
Kobe will be 34 in 2012, and he’d be 40 by the time Howard’s contract would be up, probably not even playing anymore.
They almost certainly won’t luck out and get a Kobe-like prospect in the draft again unless they own a high lottery pick.
Gasol and Odom are getting older too.
Mike Brown is NO Phil Jackson.
You would think the Lakers would have no problem attracting at least one other superstar free agent after Kobe’s gone, but if they don’t?
    All alone 12…
I think Chicago’s the best choice.
Rose is younger than Howard, they’d be together for a while.
And the three-time defensive POY on the best defensive team in the NBA? Match made in hoops heaven.

  • kobesBESTfriend

we don’t want D12…we need a point guard!!!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

The reason why the Lakers are the best choice is because they can win now, and later. The organization has always been able to find, get, create talent for their team to be legitimate threats. From my perspective there is another 3 years Kobe can be a 1 or 2 option on a title team. That means 3 oportunities for a chip now, and an organization that has proved to get talent once talent leaves their team for the future.

  • SwissArmyKnife5

Man if the Bulls get Howard its a wrap. As long as they get rid of Boozer.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

@kobesbff, I would defintely take CP3 over Dwight!

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The Bulls can also win now and later with Howard and Rose, and there is much less uncertainty though.
I’m not trying to hate on the Lakers, I think they’ve done an outstanding job the last few decades of ensuring they have a core in place that can contend every year.
I just think right now, with Jerry’s kid trying to run the show and not knowing what the hell he’s doing, LA might not be able to rebuild the way they’ve always been able to.
In Chicago, Rose is 22, Deng is 26, then you add Howard who’s 25 I believe. They’d be set for a while.
Asik is gonna be a beast off the bench. I’ve heard nothing but good things about our draft pick Mirotic. The depth is there.
Even if we had to give up some combination of Boozer, Noah and Gibson (or even Deng) we’d still be good.
Our only weakness is shooting guard.
The Bulls would only have opposition from the Heat and Thunder, in my opinion, in Howard’s time with Chicago if he went there.
    But of course I’m biased.

  • http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/chicago-bulls-talk/2011 Diesel

Amen Rigo. Don’t forget in the Lakers situation, not only will Kobe be done soon, but Bynum and or Gasol will most likely be invloved in the trade to get Howard. That team woudl be worse than the Magic team he’s on now. I’d be 100% ok with trading Noah and Gibson or any similar combination. Especially after hearing Noah got sent home from the French national team because he’s still having ankle problems. Make it happen Gar!

  • http://slamonline BossTerry

Whenever a “big-name” player becomes a free agent, my 1st thought is often- What is their hometown?? Alot of guys want to “go home”.. Dwight on the Hawks??

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

The best place for Dwight to go (other then the obvious ^ as mentioned above) is……. the Clippers!

  • retrobat

Dammit, Dwight was at Comic Con??? I was just there! I never even heard about him being at Comic Con.

  • RoG23

@BossTerry: yeaaah ive been thinking that same thing since his free agency hit the media. plus he played aau with josh smith. hinrich, jj, smith, horford, howard????? sounds good on paper. perimeter and interior defense. interior and perimeter scoring, plus a spark like jc off the bench?? i know jjs contract has been an issue, but who knows what will happen by 2012

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Oh man, that would make me happier than him coming to the Lakers. The Clippers would be by far, the most fun team to watch. Wow. I can’t even imagine. Oooh and something I was noticing, Blake only avg. a half a block a game. Whats up with that?? I know he’s a Rookie who had to focus on offense, but when your as athletic as that dude playing the 4 spot you gotta get at least a block a game!

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    Cosign Enigmatic.

  • doyouwantmore

Its always the same teams! If he goes to the Lakers I quit watching the NBA. I’m so sick of looking forward to all the possibilities when a high-level star changes teams, and so disappointed when I realize that there’s really no possibilities at all.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    Howard on the Clippers?
    With Blake Griffin?
Poor NBA big men…NBA frontcourts would no longer be safe.
I love a lot of the Clips players, but as long as Donald Sterling owns the Clippers, I wish them no success. Sorry.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Awh common Donnie Sterling is just uhmmm, misunderstood… Okay dudes a d*ck.

  • RoG23

the clips need a sturdy playmaker who can handle pressure time. they need a elite playmaker in order to maximize blakes potential. a dwight howard wouldnt hurt, but not something they should break theyre backs over. what good is blake and howard with a mo williams at the point? i hate the celtics and especially rondo(soley because of the many flops) but a rondo-esque pg would be the best solution for the clips currently

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    ^Ricky Rubio?

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lake – Blake Griffin is a lot like the young Amar’e except he actually enjoys and knows how to rebound. Other than that, they play offense, and defense in the same fashion.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@RoG23 – hmm…guess they should’ve held on to that draft pick that ended up being Kyrie Irving, huh?
Oh Well! Hope they’re happy with Mo Gotti!

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Agreed Rog23, but no one is saying that Howard is what they need to win championships, we’re just saying it’d be freaking crazy!!! And honestly Mo running the point for a couple years while Blake becomes beastly enough to take a team to the finals is really not that bad. He hits shots and the open man… He’s not a scrub, he’s just a 1 or 2 time all star.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If the CLippers have Dwight, Blake, Gordon, Aminu, and DeAndre Jordan as their backup Center they can have Dan Dickau as their starting PG and they will still be fine.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Although if they had to get Dwight via trade they would presumably give up Mo Williams, Jordan, Aminu, Kaman (maybe Eric Bledsoe) and draft picks. And the CLippers would be forced to take back Gilbert Arenas. — So Arenas, Gordon, Gomes, Griffin, Howard – With Foye, Craig Smith, and a couple duds off the bench, they’d still be a playoff team.

  • Darren

Would love to see him join the Knicks, but he will almost certainly join the Lakers.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Whucha got against Dan?? jk jk, lol, but NBK, Didn’t Amare even avg 2 block a couple times? I was surprised he didn’t at least have 1. He better get 1 or 2 blocks for his career. I’m 6’4″ and I can block as well as anyone my height. It’s about timing, he has the hops for sh*ts sake. Seems like it would only take a concerted effort to grab a couple a night.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

OR Rose, any SG, Deng, Gibson, Howard.
Arenas and Asik off the bench.
    Now that’s what’s up 

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Yeah Amare has averaged 2.1 before, just like he did 1.9 last year. He’s still a horrid defender, just swiping at shots from the weakside. Gives up more then he blocks/alters that’s for sure. – Matic, how in the world would Dwight fit into the salary cap with all those guys lol

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Yeah, personally it boggles my mind that Blake doesn’t get more blocks.
I mean, not all power forwards can block shots left and right.
Carlos Boozer sucks at blocking shots, but he’s 6’8” and can’t jump that high, this dude can jump out of the gym and he’s 6’10”.
But he only had 45 blocks last year.
Derrick Rose is 6’3” and he had 51 blocks.
And of course, Dwyane Wade is 6’4” and he had 87 blocks (while missing 7 games).

  • robb

@ LakeShow CP3 to Kobe in Manilla. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4osbU8NQgMY

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

All nba players lie about their height. Boozer is more of 6’6 and Griffin more of 6’8. Clippers have no chance of getting Dwight unless they trade that Minny pick along with Eric Gordon and Jordan (Michael Jordan).

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

someday people will realize nobody is going to have a trade package that is equal value to dwight…..probably the day after Orlando trades him though (And they will trade him, if you paid any attention to LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams….over the past year)

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Andrew Bynum and Odom sounds better than Noah or anything from Clippers unless they trade Griffin which is not gonna happen.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I will admit that the unprotected lottery pick from Minnesota that Clippers own is very valuable though

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Kap I dunno if it’s by that much. Probably more like Booz 6’7″, Griff 6’9″, Charles Barkley 6’2″ lol. Enig, ya Dwade with twice as many blocks in fewer games… Dam.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Bynum can’t play 50+ games in a season. Odom is Odom, and he isn’t getting any younger. – Mo Williams (8.5M for 2 Years then Expiring), Chris Kaman (12M Expiring), Deandre Jordan (? – 1.4Mill Qualifying Offer that will surely get higher), Aminu (6Mill over 2 Years – 3Mill Team Option) Eric Bledsoe (6Mill total over 4 Years) Offers a ton of Cap relief and Prospects. Plus a Center in Kaman who is more productive and more durable then Andrew Bynum, coupled with Jordan who has a ton of potential and I would say the Clipper offer sounds better long term.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Plus the unprotected Pick, and whatever other picks and incentives the CLippers could throw in. — ANd the reason I don’t think it is totally against Donald Sterlings frugal ownership strategies is because Howard will bring in more revenue then goes out, packaged with all the cool fan incentive type things they can do with Blake Griffin in the 2nd biggest market in the NBA.

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

Kaman has just missed as many games as Bynum in the last two seasons. Bynum is championship defensive anchor and clearly a good starting building piece even though he isn’t Dwight Howard.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If you feel comfortable building a team around Andrew Bynum and his knees then yes, he is definitely the best individual that Orlando can get in a trade with a Western Conference team….but if they wanted a center to build around then this trade is going down with New Jersey, cuz Brook Lopez is a better/healthier prospect then Andrew Bynum. – Plus Kaman would be a 1 year rental if he can’t stay healthy, you’d get his 12Mill off, then the next year Mo Williams and Jameer Nelson come off the books, putting Orlando is great Salary Cap position from 2013 going forward. A far cry from the situation they are in today.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

Well, of course we can’t predict much until we know about the new CBA, but Arenas will make $20.8 mil that year. If Howard opts out, I’d imagine he’d get a max contract so about $18 mil for the first year.
    That’s $38.8 mil.
Noah, Deng and Boozer will make about a combined $39 mil that season.
So Howard and Arenas for Noah, Deng and Boozer would work.
Of course, the problem then would be you lose Deng, a very valuable piece.
Who would be the new starting 3? Jimmy Butler?
And you’d probably only keep Taj around for one more year cause with Rose coming off his rookie contract and also commanding more money, no way you could afford to keep him around.
    So, damn.
Back to the drawing board…this is why I’m not an NBA GM.

  • BostonBaller

D12 will be in celtic Green after 2012. Line up RR, RayRay, D12, KG & J Green would be decent for a year until the replacements came along. Howard would benefit from Doc’s coaching, passes/alleys from Rondo, less double teams b/c of the shooting of Ray, Paul, Delonte (if still here) and he wouldn’t be rebounding alone w/ the help of Green & KG. Hey, you guys have your wish list and I have mine. lol. NO LOCKOUT PLEASE!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

As a basketball fan I would love to see a frontcourt of Howard and Griffin. I have wondered why couldn’t Howard play PF for LA and Bynum play Center?

  • http://slamonline.com Kap

I was a fan of Brook until last season when he didn’t get a double double until like January. I do agree he is a good piece though.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Anyone who wants to see how teams salary situations pan out can go to HoopsHype it shows the next 5 years of every player on every team. — If I were Chicago and I was too offer a package for Dwight I’d offer, Joakim/Deng/Gibson/Korver for Howard/Turkoglu, its the only trade that I can get to match up Salary wise lol – I just don’t think Chicago really has the pieces to make that move.

  • RoG23

can anyone else picture howard in that atl uni?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

Dwight to the Rockets! Make it happen, Morey!

  • T-Money

Barkley’s height is a myth. You can google a mug shot that lists him at 6’7. He’s also a bit taller than MJ when they’re side-by-side.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

T-Money.. Look at him next to Penny. Penny has about 2 inches on him. Hardaway listed at 6’7″…. I dunno man

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

And Barkley himself says he is 6’4″ in his book…

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Barkley is 6’4.75″ according to just about everything that lists his real height. His pre-draft height was listed at 6’5″ but that can be due to rounding up. Someone should youtube his draft and see if they say his actual height via commentary, not listed during the draft because that is with shoes.

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/officerbarbrady what

    Dwight to ATL

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

I think Dwight to cavs!!! The trade would be Dwight Howard for entire cabs roster plus all draft picks for next 5 years lol.

  • barnabusb

Obviously Dwight should go to the Pistons. I mean, come on.

  • http://Slamonline.com Caboose

Tyreke Evans, Demarcus Cousins, John Salmons, Samuel Dalembert, and JJ Hickson for Dwight, Hedo, and Ryan Anderson.

  • Tony

    New Jersey!

  • T-Money

Guys, just google “barkley mug shot”

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

Prolly got shoes on so its pointless.

  • TheCelticFan

I’m going to just say this; done in true SLAM magazine form. Celtics baby…Celtics baby…Celtics baby…Celtics babeeeee.

  • T-Money

Nbk: like all players’ listed height! Why do we care about how tall chuck is barefoot when all the players list their heighht with shoes? Chuck entertains that myth because it makes his accomplishments seem even more incredible.

  • All Day

Dwight wants to win multiple champtionships, that eliminates the Hawks and Clippers—–Dwight doesn’t like cold weather and prefers warmer weather, that eliminates the Knicks, Nets, Celtics, and Bulls—–Dwight wants to get more involved in acting….sorry to end the suspense, but Dwight is going to the Lakers, folks.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Nbk cares so much about shoes cuz he got one in his ass ;)

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

We arent arguing about his listed height. You can go anywhere to read that. What does real height mean to you?

  • MtotheS
  • irondan21

I’m sick of hearing this crap

  • Armando

Bringing up that mug shot of Barkley is just a bad argument. How far is he from the chart, what kind of shoes is he wearing. He has said several times that he’s 6’4 3/4. According to the pre-draft measurements Barkley is just under 6’8 without shoes so there’s no need to speculate. More accurate heights at http://www.draftexpress.com/nba-pre-draft-measurements/

  • Armando

    *Boozer* is just under 6’8

  • Red Star

    See ya Bynum!!!

  • RunNGun

Dwight’s going to the Timberwolves… LMAO If only Walsh was around, eh Knicks fans?

  • T-Money

Armando: if you don’t trust the mug shots, you can just look at pictures next to other players. He’s taller than MJ… / Wow, Shaq is 71 without shoes?!

  • T-Money

Wow. There are some interesting info on that chart. Jordan Farmar has a 42 inch vert and OJ Mayo has a 41 inch vert. Not sure why this doesn’t translate in actual game situations. Shaq had a 36 inch vert (higher than Dwight) and has the highest max reach ever according to the table at 12’5. Bonkers. Also, DeSagana Diop has a 25 inch vert lol.

  • MsRita

Who would they are never going to Champions without SHAQ. Why would he take a huge pay to join the finals losers.

  • MsRita

Miami Heat was hoping he would join their team for 250,000.00 per year for 6 years. LOL!

  • Lucky Man

im sure hope Rockets get Dwight Howard cuz they need him.

  • http://forbes.com giogolo

Try this. D12 could really help Boston win even for the next 2 years and make the east interesting with the Heat and Bulls. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=4ym36gh

All they need is a 3rd team for it to work cuz 4 would be to complicated already. The most qualified and can be for any trade actuall is the LA clippers which loaded of fresh talent from ALL postions. All they have to do is give up Kaman which is logical to give thier youg guys more room (playing time) to improve like deandre. Only trick is to convince em to take the vets from Celts which can actually guide their young guys for a year even if they release them after. they dont have to give up a lot of thier good young ones. Orlando meantime would just be thankful they’re able to take atlerst some talent than just go zilch with FA.

  • http://forbes.com giogolo

how about nene to miami bosh to rockets in 3 way trade with denver. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=3rmlbzv

though i know pat and the big 2 wouldn’t want to break Bosh’ heart.

  • Big M.D.W

dwight should go somewhere with a beast 2guard like with Drose johnwall or chrispaul he could get a chip whith 1 of those guys

  • Tony.M

Lakers are old, Finished! Dwight howard is better off coming to the Sacramento Kings. laker won’t be able to keep up with the young kings this year we got Tyreke Evans , J.J Hickson , Demarcus Cousins , Jimmer Fredette ,thorton , and so on. Lakers trying to pull a miracle trade with Orlando like kwame brown trade. lakers will offer you blown knee caps , old players because they need to get younger. Howard is better off with the Kings. he would look good in black in purple! Sactown Baby!
