Matt Bonner Having Trouble Becoming a Canadian

Matt Bonner’s citizenship difficulties are not only a major headache for himself, but also for the Canadian national hoops team. The London Free Press reports (via Project Spurs): “The fact Bonner, a former member of the Toronto Raptors and current forward with the San Antonio Spurs, has been unsuccessful in procuring his Canadian citizenship, despite getting the ball rolling back in 2008, upsets [Leo] Rautins to no end. ‘It’s very frustrating,’ the head coach said on Tuesday, after a Team Canada practice at Ryerson University. ‘I see a lot of Canadians who are less Canadian than Matt Bonner. His daughter’s Canadian. His wife’s Canadian. His grandfather’s Canadian. He’s got a home here. When he’s not playing for the San Antonio Spurs, he’s here (in Toronto).’ The main stumbling block seems to be the fact that Bonner, a native of Concord, N.H., spends most of the year in the United States. But he has no choice. He plays for San Antonio. Rautins said Canada Basketball has tried to make that point to the federal immigration ministry, but to no avail.”

“I see a lot of Canadians who are less Canadian than Matt Bonner.” …Interesting.

An article about a ginger baller trying to get his papers in order to play for Team Canada… Very refreshing.

He should refuse to speak english (or french) and hangout with people who also don’t speak english. Or show up in a boat claiming refugee status. His citizen request will be rubberstamped.

  • lmurray

soo frustrating that players like chris kaman can play for gemany, having never been there, but Canada wants to be difficult, co-sign on him showing up not speaking english on a boat claiming refugee, should work

  • G

Matt Bonner was the greatest player to ever don a raptors jersey

Earthjuice, do I sense a bit of hostility towards non-white/non-English-speaking Canadians? Because if you are white, and you do speak English, chances are you’re an immigrant yourself.

    GO NEW HAMPSHIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As nice as the Red Rocket is as a stretch-4 role player in the NBA, it says a lot about the sad state of our national hoops team that they’re recruiting Bonner so aggressively and it will seem like an utter failure if he’s not granted citizenship.

  • James AKA…

This seems really bizarre. My wife got her permanent residence here 5 months after we applied for it, and she’s lived all her life until these last 3 months in ethiopia. Maybe there is something different about applying for the citizenship part of it after 3 years (which is standard).

What is this nonsense Rautins is spouting about “Canadians who are less Canadian than Matt Bonner”? Is this some code talk? If you got a citizenship, you’re canadian. That’s all there is to it. Doesn’t matter if your grandpa is Canadian and you can sing the words to “hockey night in Canada” or if you’re a new immigrant from Africa and can’t speak the language. We’re all equally Canadians.

Rautins looking a bit suspect with that quote.

  • iLLwiLL

Why they gotta do the Red Rocket dirty like that?

  • T-Money

Chances are Leo may consider myself to be “less Canadian” too even though, yanno, I’ve been here since I was 10. Also, Leo is kind of a tool who plays favorites. That’s why Dalembert doesn’t play for the NT anymore. And he cut Kris Joseph while keeping his son even though they were both playing on the same with Kris clearly being the better player, think about it. He’s got all kind of dudes playing 2nd division Euro ball on the team but didn’t have a spot for a future 1st-round pick?

  • MikeC.

@T – I can’t speak on any of the other players, but Dalembert was cut for good reason. He was a major diva and acted like an a-hole with the National Team. He thought he was an offensive star and turned into a total chucker.

  • T-Money

MikeC. I don’t remember him as a chucker and the stats I could find have him averaging 10-10 with 2 blocks for the NT on 49% shooting… what does acting like a diva mean? can you give concrete examples?

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’ve heard that Dalembert was a good sport and offered to take his teammates out to eat, etc. I don’t think he was as bad as the media/Rautins has made him out to be. And really, he was obviously the best player on the team.

Is anyone really surprised Leo Rautins would say something like that?

  • MUBWAR

if you’re not an aboriginal person Canada and the US does belong to us

Speaking of… Why the hell do Americans still refer to Natives as “Indians”? That’s just insulting. Nobody refers to Caribbean people as “West Indians” anymore. But Native Americans? We’ll just call them Indians! Gosh forbid we should associate them with THIS CONTINENT.
Not only that, but you have all of this Native American terminology used in the US military. And then we have the Cleveland “Indians” and the Washington “Redskins”.
Racism against Natives is probably the most out in the open kind of racism in North America, to be honest. I’m not saying other minorities don’t face it, but even in Canada it’s very very out in the open.

  • Charles

    Leo Rautins is a tit.

  • Flud

Injuns is it. Rautins reminds me of Steve Staunton..(useless Irish football manager).. Tragic

You know, if Matt Bonner told them he needed citizenship for the National Hockey team he might get his in a week =P

  • T-Money

Teddy: Co-sign. It never ceases to amaze me that there’s a team called the Redskins in 2011. And Chief Wahoo? Really?

  • iCARNACKi

“Matt Bonner having trouble becoming a Canadian” I don’t know why but the title of this just makes me chuckle, its just a funny concept for a sitcom or web series, where a camera follows Bonner’s goofy ass trying to fit in with Canadians. He can tap a tree for syrup, say ‘aboot’, go get some free healthcare, go to Tim Horton’s, riot over a hockey game and then wrap it all up by going home and not locking his doors because Canada’s nice like that.
