Nets Tell Deron Williams They’ll Pursue Dwight Howard

by Adam Figman / @afigman

New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams has inked with a new agent, ESPN has learned. But what the Worldwide Leader—and everyone else—doesn’t know just yet is if DWill’s newly-signed agent will convince his client to stay with the Nets and sign on long-term.

That’s certainly what the Nets are hoping for, and they’ll do what they can to make that happen—including, as would be expected, a chase for the top free agents available next summer. And there’ll no bigger free agent than 6-11 center Dwight Howard, who may be in the market for a good offer to play alongside another superstar.

New Jersey Nets point guard Deron Williams has chosen to sign with Jeff Schwartz as his new agent, according to sources with knowledge of the decision.

Williams recently parted ways with longtime agent Bob McLaren, who primarily works with Major League Baseball clients.

The decision to sign with Schwartz’s Excel Sports Management means that the top three free agents in the summer of 2012 will all be represented by different agents. Orlando’s Dwight Howard is represented by Dan Fegan, New Orleans’ Chris Paul signed with Leon Rose last summer and now Williams is aligning with Schwartz, whose client roster includes top veterans Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, Tyson Chandler and Lamar Odom, as well as young stars Blake Griffin and Kevin Love.

Williams has made no firm promises about staying in New Jersey but has said he likes the direction of the franchise under new owner Mikhail Prokhorov. The 27-year-old has likewise expressed optimism about the team’s scheduled move to Brooklyn starting with the 2012-13 season and his potential role in luring other top players to the Nets.

The Nets, sources said, intend to make a hard push for Howard in an attempt to convince Williams to commit long term.

There are alot of teams pursuing Dwight Howard. A Deron to Dwight duo would be great to watch.

  • Zabba

    I hope it happens.

  • heart grit grind

not a lot worked in the trade machine. one trade that did work was morrow/outlaw/lopez for howard. i dont think the magic would be interested in that.

  • tomtom

    Instant contenders.

  • asgf

lopez plus dwight plus deron= the new big 3.

Honestly Dwight ( although I wish) isn’t going to L.A, he definetly is NOT going to new jersey, I can only see Dwight back in a Orlando uniform…

If the Nets publicly said they are going after Howard, isn’t that tampering?

  • Jer Boi

yea no way Brook and Howard gonna be on the Nets unless they sign him next year.

  • robb

    not happening

  • O

Howard wants to go to Los Lakers. He may want to stay in Orlando, but they have horrible contracts that ain’t going nowhere for a hot minute. Even though Kobe is getting old, he went to Germany to get that PRP/HGH treatment done to his knee. So he should be pretty damn good for at least another two years. Should Howard force his way to LA, they’d take a title or two within the next three years. That is if they Magic don’t completely gut the Lakers the same way Denver did New York.

if ANY team is not pursuing Dwight Howard they’re crazy. We already know Prokhorov doesn’t take no for an answer, and if he doesn’t get Dwight he’ll still be on a relentless hunt to improve the team so D-Will should stick around because the Brooklyn Nets may be on the come-up with or without Dwight

  • Double J

oh my god the nets are going to try and sign dwight howard?!?!?!?!

  • AD

i love how evrybody thinks they know what dwight is goona do….. you laker and knick fans make me laugh……

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

I’m just begging Dwight to come to LA because we have Mr. “My Coaching Strategy is giving to the ball to Lebron ALL GAME”Mike Brown.

  • AD

@blackphantom what should Mike Brown hav done then?

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t like either team but I’d put it at 80% he’ll be a Laker, 29% Net, 1%Other, 0% Orlando after the draft next season.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

I don’t like either team but I’d put it at 80% he’ll be a Laker, 19% Net, 1%Other, 0% Orlando after the draft next season.

  • Groves

I hope this doesn’t happen… Dwight deserves chris paul

  • robb

Easy. Gasol goes to New Orleans, Bynum goes to Orlando. Voilá.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Amare Excuses

SEnd howard to the LAKERS! to give them a chance to beat the heat LOL!

  • http://www.slamonline.com Amare Excuses

HEat 96, lakers 80 christmas Game

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@AD he could’ve actually drawn up offensive plays that weren’t for Lebron or didn’t have to be set up for Lebron.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

Wat tha hell…hello, tha Lakers have a front court of Gasol, Bynum and Odom. Im a Lakers fan myself but y on earth do some Laker fans want Howard so bad??? I’d take those 3 together over Howard anyday

  • http://www.facebook.com/joe.l.brewer3 BlackPhantom

@Tae…..I love that front court too man. But Dwight at the 5 is more of a sure thing than Bynum. He hasn’t been through a whole season as a starter without getting injured. And Gasol(Though I love him as a player)needs to be consistent. There I said it. He was very good this regular season but played like a dog with his tail between his legs during both rounds of the playoffs.

Actually I talked to Dwight the other day, he said hes coming to Boston.

  • RunNGun

Dwight’s going to the Timberpups. He wants to play with Rubio, Love, Williams, and Beasley.

  • david stern

Think about it… What do teams hav to offer?
    NJ – lopez, morrow
    Heat – Bosh
    Bulls – Boozer/Noah, gibson, deng
    Lakers- Bynum + Odom

idk about you but there is nothing good NJ cud give to Magic or enough for Howard to stay there after. The only possibilities are Bulls and Lakers. He wud only want to go to Chicago because Rose is young. Otherwise, Bulls aren’t the type of organization that likes to spend a lot of money and I doubt they would want to give up boozer and noah. Even if they did, Bynum + Odom is far superior to Boozer + Noah. Not to mention lakers hav the ability to take on terrible contracts of arenas or turkoglu. Magic will trade with the Lakers and they will get the closest guy to Howard in the NBA (Bynum) and also that Power Forward that they missed last year(Odom). Both they and the lakers will benefit from the trade. Howard can win at least 2 of the next 3 years with Kobe and then can attract other superstars since it’s LA. It would really surprise me if he doesn’t go there.

  • tbaird25

the nets also have a 2 first round picks to use for trade bait along with brook lopez.

  • Jeff

If there is a full season lockout, which is probably going to occur since the owners and players are that far part despite them saying they are hopeful of a deal, Dwight Howard will be a Brooklyn Net. Nets will be fiscally ready with the cap space also. Nets’ new arena opens in September ’12, therefore the ’12-’13 season will be there first season in BK. With Deron, Mikhail, Brooklyn, an improving roster, I can’t see how he resists. A team consisting of arguably the best pass first point guard in the L and the best center point blank means you’re killing everybody. Don’t forget the real college player of the year MarShon Brooks, who is going to be a very good player in the league, and Kris Humphries, Anthony “I can make 3′s with my eyes closed” Morrow, up and comer D. James, J-Will, Farmar, and more.

They’ll already win the Atlantic Division, and yes Knicks fans they’ll beat Amar’e and Carmelo. They would defeat Chicago, and they could definitely take on the Heatles. Nets would have them beat at 2 positions (1 and 5). I remember when people were laughing when the Nets did that Blueprint for Greatness billboard. Nets are headed on the right path, and in all likelihood, NO ONE will be laughing anymore.

    I like the Dwight’s game a lot…….

  • http://www.officeanything.com OfficeFurnitureGUy

Not gonna happen via trade. The Nets have nothing of value to offer for Dwight. If he leaves via free agency (because they don’t trade him) he would be more likely to go to a true contender like OKC, Chicago, or LA.

  • http://www.ukmoneyblog.co.uk/ ukmoneyblog

I think Nets would be the choice for Dwight Howard if Deron Williams is going to stay there.. Jameer Nelson is definitely not as good as Deron Williams… But I think Orlando has already some good pieces in place… They just need to add some more quality pieces… Just my opinion…

  • Tony

if they told him that, this would be tampering!

  • http://www.paydayloanapplication.ca/ Payday Loans

I think Dwight Howard is a good fit with the Nets. But some rumors are coming out that Lakers are trying to get Howard as well. This would be really interesting..
