OKC Thunder Changing Name of Arena

The OKC Thunder will have a new corporate name adorning their playing gym for the next 12 years. The Oklahoman reports: “Chesapeake Energy Arena will be the new name of Oklahoma City’s downtown arena formerly known as the Ford Center under a new naming rights agreement jointly announced Thursday by the Oklahoma City Thunder and Chesapeake Energy Corp. Under the 12-year naming rights agreement, Chesapeake will pay the Thunder $3 million the first year, with a 3 percent annual escalation clause for each year, thereafter. The agreement includes Chesapeake branding throughout the building including on the basketball court, prominent premium placement on the high-definition scoreboard and new state-of-the-art interior and exterior digital signage. Most of the signage is expected to be in place by the start of the Thunder’s 2011-12 season.”

How is this arena not called the Thunderdome????

  • Ohhitskb

That’s our unofficial name for it ;)

They should call it the “Starbucks Center” or “Howard Schultz Memorial Arena” after the prick that’s ultimately responsible for you having a team.

so Aubrey McClendon will be paying himself?

So sick of these corportate-sponsored arena names. I miss the Chicago Staduim, Boston Garden and so on.
In the finals last year you had the Miami Heat playing at the American Airlines Arena and the Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center.

lol @enigmatic. I remember that now. They should at least restrict it to one per corporation. or else american airlines should just try to buy all of them. or the entire eastern conference.

Enigmatic, yeah it sucks but I prefer coporate subsidies to ease the tax payer’s burden.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter because the locals are gonna call it whatever they want. I bet people in LA call the Staples Center the Forum, and people in Boston probably call whatever the stadium is The Garden. Luckily where I live it’s the Rose Garden, but it’ll probably be Intel Arena or Nike Stadium or something soon.

Well, better corporate-sponsored arenas than corporate jerseys.
