Rajon Rondo: Boston Celtics Are Still Title Contenders

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

For many, the Boston Celtics’ championship window has all but effectively closed.

They’re old, breaking down physically, and there’s no telling what their bench support will look like once the NBA gets going again.

Rajon Rondo doesn’t share in that pessimistic outlook. According to the Celtics’ star point guard, Boston has just as good a chance as any other team to win the NBA title next season.

Rondo says the Celtics let the Kendrick Perkins trade affect them a little too much last season, but that he likes what the team’s future looks like.

From Yahoo! Sports:

If [Glen] Davis departs, Rondo, Pierce, Garnett and Allen would be the only Celtics left from the 2008 championship team. Boston already lost a significant piece of that team after trading [Kendrick] Perkins last season. The Celtics took a lot of heat for the Perkins deal which affected their chemistry and changed their starting lineup in the middle of the season.“It wasn’t like the man passed away or something,” Rondo said. “I think we put too much emphasis on it. It’s a business. He got traded. He’s very happy where he’s at. We still talk and I’m always going to have his back. It shouldn’t have affected us the way it affected us.”

“Doc [Rivers]‘ proven with the players that we have that he will have a winning record,” Rondo said. “But most of all, he’s never going to settle. We always want to win a championship. That’s the only goal we have as a team and that’s his mindset. When you talk to him, he believes we have the talent and the ability to win a championship. That’s our standard. He holds us accountable … “They said we were done two years ago,” Rondo said. “We could care less about that. We could care less about people saying we are done.”

In addition to overall toughness, and a relentless commitment to defense, these Boston Celtics are built on a foundation of defiance.

They will ride this attitude out until the wheels fall off.

They do if they play their cards right in terms of acquiring a Center and a backup SF.

  • kbj

Tell these haters Rondo, soon as yall start winning again ,they’ll hop back on the wagon

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

It’s, we COULDN’T care less. That just grinds my gears. Anyway, I think they can still compete, just not sure if they can make deep playoff runs with those old legs. I think they should definitely re-sign Delonte.

  • boss

i dont kno about boston winning those dudes seem done to me with miami chicago new york there that are younger its gonna be hard for them

  • http://www.optimabbc.be Max

    I don’t think so.

  • apache

they can deffinetly make a good run if the lockout shortens the season more time for the vets to rest those legs and be fresh

  • flipnoyce

    “Anything is Posssssssssssssiblllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllle”!!!!!

  • ballerphil

@apache I think a shorter season like 98-99 would be worse. 50 games in 2 1/2 months would kill them. And rest doesn’t make old bones harder anyway.

  • MikeC.

A shortened season would be tougher. More stretches of 4 games in 5 nights and more back to backs. If they can re-load and get more depth, then it’s all a moo point.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

yeah they could, but so could Miami, Dallas, LA, NY, San Antonio, Oklahoma City…etc…you get the picture. Boston needs Greg Oden or Nene, Tracy McGrady, and Jason Richardson. Make it happen Ainge!

  • ClydeSays

I’m a C’s fan & definitely think they have a Playoff run left in them. But to get back to the Finals, they’ll need to resign Green & have him settle into some kind of productive role. They’ll need a healthy Big Four. They’ll also need a defensive minded Center. Lot’s of IF’s….

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Mars, no NY and San Antonio etc. can’t win a title. You kidding? Yes the Celtics still have a shot. They are not favorites. But I have them as one of 3 east teams who could have a championship run.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I’m with Lakeshow on that front. Except idk if Boston has a run in them. They don’t have a championship level supporting cast, and their starters aren’t as young and athletic as they used to be, i don’t think they can carry that team through a whole series like in 08.

  • MissEighty8

    It’s over, Rondo.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

I really think it’s their last legitimate year to WIN a title with this main core. But I really do think it is possible this year. Lakers, OKC, Dallas in the West. Bulls, Celts, Heat in the East. I can’t fathom anyone else WINNING a title.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

If Chris Paul gets traded, that’s the only way I see any other team getting into the picture.

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

    Its over ask KG.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Good call.. He could make 3 or 4 teams contenders by just his addition it seems like. I’m interested to see if the Nets get anyone that can make them a legit threat, maybe not championship calibre, but they could be dope with an addition or 2.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Yeah if New Jersey adds anyone I see them in a NYK situation. (Well NYK from last year, in that they will have to give up almost everything they have to get another superstar, leaving them a whole year to rebuild around their new core. Although Deron Williams is a better player to win around IMO then anyone on the Knicks roster, so that’s a headstart.

  • AQWORD

Wel see how you look 20 games into the season then assume ish, but yeah . You gots to say that. We dont blame ya.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

They will need another Superstar to become Championship calibre, but I see them being a tuff squad right now. Like a 40+ win team. With a another good allstar they could be a 50 win team and a 4 or 5 seed for sure. I need to look at their roster now cause I don’t really know everyone they got right now. But if they stil have Outlaw, Lopez and that one shooter guy from Golden State thats an Okay squad for Derron to work with. Oh ya and I dunno if Kardashian is going to be relevant but he played well last year for them.

  • DieselMechanic

The only team beating them in the East is Miami. But they do need to make moves to be able to get over the Heat. They need to have a great offseason.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I don’t know how you see that, they were horrible, even with Deron Williams averaging 15 and 13 with them. Why do you think they are gonna improve by almost 20 games? (I believe they were 5 & 7 with Deron Williams but I’m not sure)

  • http://itsahardwoodlife.blogspot.com omphalos

If Marshon Brooks pans out as a bench scorer (worst case scenario), then the Nets will be competitive. People forget that Rondo got taken down in game 3. He is vitally important to the team and if he’d been healthy who knows what Boston could have done. Hopefully they can re-sign Green, who should feel more comfortable. Worst thing that can happen is no training camp, which means no chance for Rivers to fully implement Jeff Green.

  • http://staticseth.blogspot.com Seth

Clock is ticking for the Cs. This is probably the last year they’ll be able to get out of the East. They really need to focus on rebuilding though, because outside of the big three and Rondo, they’re weak.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Because he was coming off an injury and I think with a training camp they could “jell” a little bit. Was Sloans system the reason they won so many games or Derron? I think mostly Derron. Not Boozer or AK-47, Or Okur.. I mean that team wasn’t stacked by any means. I think they could be pretty okay. Why do you think they will suck so bad?

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Also, I see Derron putting up 22 and 10. I don’t know why he shot so terrible with the Nets..

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

It was Sloans System, Deron Williams, and the vastly superior supporting cast to this Nets team. Kirelinko is a former All-Star all league defender. Boozer was an all star. Millsap is better then everyone in New Jersey except Brook Lopez. Plus Utah had DEPTH. Something New Jersey gave up to get Deron Williams. I have the Nets winning between 32 and 36 with their current roster.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

And i’ll put them between 36 and 42 with the current roster. Hopefully we can see a full season so all this talk of what is going to happen next season is an actuality. I won’t be surprised if they are a 30 win team, but i’d be equally not surprised to see them having a good year. I mean I just don’t know that ATL and ORL are that much better. I really liked the Sixers, but I don’t see them getting any better really. And ya Sloan’s system is obviously a part of it, but we all know Boozer isn’t a real AllStar lol..(Idon’t know if i’m kidding or not) And AK-47 is past his prime and really not superior at anything anymore(to bad, I really liked his game) Milsap is solid but barely a starter in the league.(remember that one game he had in the playoffs where he made more 3′s than he did the entire year, that was awesome) All in all I am not so sure that the Jazz were vastly better than this Nets team. We shall see though.

  • http://bedotwater.bandcamp.com BE.water

^that wrist he hurt was probably making his shot broke.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Lake I know those guys aren’t what they were, but Deron Williams isn’t there now, he was there then. lol – And Boozer is a regular season All Star, he’s just such a dud in the post season it erases all of our positive thoughts. That game he hit those threes was a regular season game last year against Miami. And Millsap always came off the bench for them with Deron Williams. He averaged what 13 and 8 one year backing up two player who were flirting with nightly double doubles. I’m not saying Millsap alone, or Boozer, or Kirilenko alone make what Utah had better then what New Jersey has, its the fact that they had all of these guys together. New Jersey has Deron Williams and Brook Lopez, other then that they have marginal NBA players who would have trouble cracking the heavy minute rotation on the majority of playoff teams.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Celtics are done period. I know we couldn’t except that fact but after watching miami pick them apart in the playoffs I don’t see them being legit threats in the league. They will win 50+ but that’s because of the starting lineup. And I think the nets really will be a different team this year with Williams getting the ball to Lopez. So I think the celtics have alot to worry about this year and should look at rebuilding soon

  • BAWSE

The Celts will be comeptitive but their ring dreams wont materailize without some serious help and miracles.

  • http://slamonline.com LakeShow

Ya your right and i see what your saying. Especially about Booz. I don’t wanna hate him, but it’s so natural Gunna stick with them surprising the league with being kinda decent tho lol. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I wonder if Humphreys is as good as Milsap. Not as good offensively, but as good defensively or i’d say better. Lopez=Okur. Outlaw=Ak… I dunno i’m blabbing, but I stick with them being kinda good next year.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

I agree they can surprise some people. They seem kinda like the bucks. They have a very good pg and center with a bunch of role players filling the gaps and I think they ate set for the long run

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

I am under the impression that Kardashian is atleast equal to Millsap in everything other then offense. Definitely a more effective on ball and help defender.

  • http://nba.com Windy City all day

lol. the C’s don’t have anything left in them. they ain’t winni’n nother championship. they will get T-Mac but The Bulls r the future of the NBA. After they get Ellis or Mayo they will roll! i thought they would go for J-Rich but they don’t have the money!

  • BostonBaller

I’m hearing the same songs I heard every year after the chip then the sound of back peddling. Of course if you keep singing the same song it will come true at some point but I don’t think this is the year the bottom falls out like a lot of you are wishing. The Miami loss didn’t taste good but that happens. I truly believe my C’s have a legit shot at the trophy this year. Defense, Experience & Heart outweighs a few pair of “old” legs every time. PDouble doesn’t look as if he is playing on old legs and Ray is in better shape than almost anyone you can name. KG is your only legit case for old legs and part of that is injuries and with injuries came low stamina/conditioning. A healthy KG would transform those legs into middle age legs. lol Know the game instead of liking teams…

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    They’re gonna trade Rondo.

  • BostonBaller

WZUP Philosopher…..don’t say things like that. I thought we were cool. lol Would we bank on Carlos A & Delonte or A bradley to run the point? NO. After your comment I’m going to double up on my heart meeds….

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    What’s going on, BostonBaller!
With Rondo’s contract, the Celtics can create a plethora of options for themselves.
    But I feel you… lol

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Bostonballer celtics are old. Except it there is no chance of a championship run with young super teams like Miami and new York and even Chicago running around. As they get older every other team gets better. I take back my comment about a 50 win season I’m saying 6th or 7th seed in playoffs IMO. Maybe trade ray allen while his value is high and get maybe 2 decent role players and a draft pick.

  • http://Slamonline.com nbk

New York is not a super team. Thats crazy talk.

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

Mere York ha super team potential. I shoulda put that in there. New York has POTENTIAL to be a super team if they make some more moves. That’s not crazy talk.

  • TheCelticFan

Listen up folks; and I say this humbly and respectfully to all my fellow Celtic nation family. The Celtics need to make a serious play at Dwight Howard – that’s right and I’ll say it first. Send KG and Big Baby to Orlando for D-Howard now. Yeah it sounds crazy but it’s a win-win situation. You either get Superman and get younger, stronger and closer to a championship this year; or you win by unloading expiring contracts. Big Baby should be used in a sign and trade along with Green. Pierce and Ray Allen, especially Ray-Ray, almost never spend time on the I.R. list. They’ll be fine and finding a combo guard to back them shouldn’t be hard. But our biggest problem is hitting the Boards and continuing our defensive tradition.

  • Galagu

    ya ok.

  • who!?

they need to draaft a superstar like a anthony davis instead of signed dwight howard in not coming

  • O

As a loyal Knicks fan who’s watched every game for the past 17 years – including the AE era (After Ewing) – I can seriously say that we’re not a super team. We might get there if we add Chris Paul, but we’d still be missing a REAL center and actual shooting guard (I like Fields, but he can’t really knock down 3′s). We should prolly get back Wilson Chandler and let him be the SG or maybe even promote the feel good story of the Knicks last year, Shawn Williams. Even then, our bench would still probably be suspect. I honestly suspect that everyone who isn’t Dwight Howard, CP3 and Deron Williams will eventually hop on the Heat bandwagon to get rings.

  • BostonBaller

CatKiller, I do accept the fact that they are aging (gracefully?) but can you accept the fact that an “old” team beat a young “super” team in the Finals. ALL of Dallas’ major contributors avg yrs in the L is about 12 or 13 compared to only 3, maybe 4 of The C’s major contributors avg yrs being over double digits. Granted the Mavs have an overall better talented roster 1 thru 16. IMO we have just as good a shot as anyone this year and with much respect I do agree w/ TheCelticFan that we need to shake a few things up, especially to get rebounding help. We need another Hulk in the middle who doesn’t have to have the ball. I’m a ride to the death fan but my glasses are not tinted Green so i do see clearly, i just don’t believe we are dead like most would like to say..again, singing the same ‘ol song will get you in the “I told ya so” category sooner or later so that y’all can say you predicted the fall. lol

  • http://Slamonline.com CatKiller

I except that the aged mavericks team did beat a
Young super team but also like you said they had a better overall roster. I just don’t see any player on thenceltics with takeover a game ability besides rondo and that mainly just lots of playmaking. But we all sadly know thexeltocs are coming to an end soon lol

The Celtics needs a good starting center. I think they better give up Ray Allen and Glen Davis for a shot at Dwight Howard or maybe Nene…
