Robert Horry: Lakers Need a New, Younger Point Guard

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Aside from his cold-blooded execution late in huge Playoff games, Robert Horry has always been known for his candidness.

When asked about the Los Angeles Lakers’ needs heading into next season, and beyond, Horry didn’t hesitate to point out what he (and many others) consider to be the team’s most glaring weakness.

According to the former Laker, Derek Fisher shouldn’t be counted on to be the starting point guard anymore. It’s because Fisher is very old, Robert Horry claims, no longer capable of doing the job meant for younger men.

From the LA Times:

“No disrespect to Derek Fisher. Derek is alone. I’ve been there, done that. They need a point guard who can distribute the ball, get everyone in order and not be afraid to tell Kobe no,” Horry said.

“You can’t outrun age. I think age has caught up to him. There’s some things he can do, but there are some things he can’t do.”

Of course, this is something Laker fans have been saying for years now, even when Derek Fisher was pulling off his postseason heroics. What’s noteworthy, is that ex-teammates (especially ones who won NBA titles together) rarely criticize one another so openly.

It’s clear that the Lakers must address their point guard situation if they plan on contending for championships with the current group. But Derek Fisher is a proud and stubborn man, who won’t easily fade into the background, to the chagrin of just about everyone who cares about the team it seems.

I feel like Fish has been 45 for the last 6 years…

dey need 2 trade fisher n gasol for rubio and klove

Farmar was the guy, funny they let him go.

I thought it was Steve Blake.

Find a short term replacement now, and grab Westbrook from OKC when he becomes a free agent. Westbrook will take the lead role from an aging Kobe and get the first scoring option tag he seems to desire. I could definitely see LA playing with a Dwight/Westbrook combo in the future.

  • dmoney

fisher sucks cause he sucks in nba2k

  • rob

    Get CP3

  • http://miamidolphins.com walton sucks

i’m a big laker fan, and while I will always love and thank D fish for everything he’s done as a laker..it is time to move on, every year he gets slower while rondo, rose, westbrook, and cp3 get faster. he simply cant keep up anymore..we need to sign aaron brooks!

Rick Fox agrees with Robert Horry.

I like that. Aaron Brooks would definitely be an upgrade, and may be the best option for next season.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

No, what the lakers need is someone that is willing to get the ball to the best combination of bigs in the L consistently.

  • T-Money

they may actually need a real pg now that they’re going to dump the triangle – unless kobe is okay with initiating the offense. he used to do it a lot back in the 3-peat days but not as much lately.

  • rich

JTayor21 hit it right on the head. if gasol aint playin well get it to bynum if bynum cant hang get it to kobe. they need a guy who can go screen and roll while being a threat to drive shoot and pass. that way when it doesnt work kobe gets it on the weakside and plays one on one basketball for the first time in almost ten years

  • Penny

They also need a shooting guard, small forward and a bench.

  • Rog23

Fisher plays dirty. I don’t like him.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Lakers need to cash Bynum in for CP3, but Jimmy Buss won’t let that happen. BOOK IT!

  • AT33

DFish is awesome. Sure he’s aged and not as fast as he used to be but the guy can straight out shoot and most of the time he makes clutch shots. Lakers need to get him come off the bench and use his clutch making ability while start a young point. That’s it.

Fisher has been old for awhile now, but until this past season he always reminded people that even though he was old, he could still be an asset to the Lakers. Now since that time is passed, I feel we should go for Aaron Brooks. But knowing Jim Buss, I’m not sure that’s going to happen.

  • IAMORANGE4EVER

Not to digress, but I surmise if Fish stayed in Utah backing up D-Will, the Lakers don’t add two more World Champions banners to their rafters. In fact Kobe is probably playing for another team by now… The Fisher Effect.

steve blake was a flop because of his headband….

What did Farmer do with his opportunities other than blow layups and miss rally killing threes?

  • Hurricane

Steve Blake is the man, but they probably do need a more solid starter and just let Blake come off the bench. Keep Blake, let Fisher go.

Man fish looks ripped in the thumbnail. No homo

    ho nomo

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

DUH, have needed a point guard for a while now. Aaron Brooks please!!!

  • feez22

… whats the point of the lakers getting cp3 when kobe jacks up all those inefficient shots? all of cp’s efficiency will be negated by kobe’s 10-28 shooting nights. you guys know this is true… what they really need to do is feed the bigs consistently and stop trying to be a 3pt shooting team. Thats obviously not going to happen now with MIKE BROWN coaching this team. for christ sakes… mike brown?

“Lakers need a new, younger point guard”…….. What a genius!

Rafer “Skip to my Lou” Alston!

  • Vince5

    Smush Parker anyone?

  • kbj

    Derek Flopper

  • unrel

to be real.. they’ve needed a pg since magic.. i think nick van exel is the only laker pg that’s made it to an all-star team since.. i don’t think the glove made it his year with the lakers.. but yes.. it’s quite obvious that fisher is aged.. he can still play.. but if the team is going to be defensively focused.. they’re going to need a quick, younger pg to play against the rest..

  • tomtom

    ‘Jordan farmar likes this’

  • ab40

why with mike brown it’s gonna be kobe watch time. Mesina is brilliant though I hope he get’s a coaching job after his contract with the Lakers is up

  • dee

Isaiah Thomas with one of those 2nd round picks would’ve cured that. Yeah he’s small but he’s quick and can score. They shouldn’ve passed up on him. They could’ve signed a couple of more polished college kids with those other two remaining picks (Ben Hansbrogh or Durrell Summers)& make them part of a package to CP3 come draft deadline. Fisher is a warrior but he’s too slow for these point guards today. I think Thomas would’ve been a better pick than Darius Morris. I’m hoping he proves me wrong. Rondo, Westbrooke, Paul, Williams, Wall, Rose , Jennings, Barera, Felton and even Lawson are the top of the food chain when it comes to point guards. Its’ time for the Lakeshow to upgrade their point.

  • http://basketballjunction.blogspot.com/ Joseph V

They totally need a point guard if they want to avoid what happened in the playoffs. Since Ray Felton has found a new home, they should trade Pau for Steve Nash .

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

The Lakers don’t need an all-star caliber PG.
Alls they need is a PG who could distribute the ball (especially since the Triangle Offense is going the way of the Phil Jackson) and do an adequate job of defending the new breed of super-quick athletic point guards like Russell Westbrook, John Wall and Derrick Rose.
Honestly, I think Jrue Holiday would be perfect for them and as an LA native and UCLA guy he’d be a fan favorite in no time.

  • Jake55

Fish is a flopper… shoulda gotten rid of him a while ago!

  • http://slamonline.com walt williams

    Javaris Crittenton

  • brandon

derek fisher should have been head coach :)

  • Rachel

It’s the coach who’ll decide to play Fisher or not… if he plays, I won’t say it’s his fault for being “proud and stubborn”. He’s got to be ready when called upon.

  • http://bleacherreport.com/nhl Yea?

Fish needs to retire and become the assistant coach of the Lakers. At least the Lakers will have one decent coach in Fish

  • http://www.triplejunearthed.com/dacre Dacre

I dare the Lakers to aquire Steve Nash and destroy all that I hold sacred.

  • 6marjons

hey friend. whoops watch out for that bus

  • Aamir K.

@ Enigmatic, im both a Sixers fan and LA fan and personally, i do think that jrue holdiay would be a good fit, but i really think that he is primed to be philly’s next great PG

  • Rainman

@ AD: And Minny would do that WHY?

Why is it that Lakers fans think they can put any absurd trade together, and expect it to go down? u guys got lucky with Gasol, it isnt always like that lol, geez

  • Lawrence Mack

Well said Robert Horry. Like I’ve been saying 4 years. Not only is Derek Fisher afraid of Kobe that’s y he’s Kobe’s boy. But Mitch Kupchak & the entire front office is afraid of this selfish declining player. Kobe forced the organization 2 go out and acquire Gasol or he wanted out? Yet A guy like Lebron plays his contract completely out with a supporting cast of bums but never critisizes his teammates. The Lakers have refused 2 draft Kobe’s predecessor which any blind man could see that Kupchack with his jellyfish back is only a figure head. That’s y Magic sold his share of the team. Kobe wanted Brian Shaw who would have served as another yes man. He’s supposed 2 be a great player, yet he shows no support 4 his newly hired coach? Give me a break. Retire Fisher because u’ve been looking old 4 the past 5 years. Oh by the way u couldn’t even start on Golden State nor the Jazz when u left the Lakers. The only reason u start 4 the Lakers is because u & Kobe r Lovers.

  • Chase

They had plenty of opportunities to grab a point guard in the NBA Draft this year. Demetri McCamey, Jacob Pullen, Ben Hansborough & Josh Shelby each would have been an improvement over Fisher right now. Instead they draft unknown players who we will never see. I’m still wondering what they were doing on draft day.
