Arvydas Sabonis Thanks Blazers Fans for Remembering Him

The newly-minted Hall of Famer was feted by the city of Portland, for which Arvydas Sabonis was extremely appreciative. From the Oregonian: “It has been eight years since Arvydas Sabonis has been in Portland, but the former Trail Blazers great said it seemed like yesterday when he was honored during a sun-splashed gathering at Portland’s Pioneer Courthouse Square. An estimated 2,500 people showered Sabonis with applause, chants of his name and signs Thursday, nearly a week after he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. ‘I feel like I’ve been here the whole time,’ said Sabonis, who lives in Kaunas, Lithuania. Always a humble and private person, Sabonis appeared embarrassed by the attention and adulation. ‘I say thank you for remembering me,’ Sabonis told the crowd. ‘I’m surprised.’ One of the most beloved Blazers ever for his stylish and unique playing style, Sabonis was legend before he arrived in Portland in 1995, nine years after the Blazers made him the first European to be drafted in the first round.”

To bad he didn’t come to the NBA earlier. It would have been fun seeing him play against Hakeem, David Robinson and everyone in his prime.

@Jeff yeah, he was like a 7’4″ version of Dirk, shooting turn around shots and 3 pointers and passing the ball like a PG. He was very special

Bill Walton was there and wanted to say something on Sabonis’s behalf but he became very emotional and began crying. Sabonis threw a towel at Bill’s face and told him to get a grip.

    Amazing talent.

Just to get a grip of how good he is, read any comments from Walton on when he first watched him play

then go watch vids of him DOMINATING David Robinson in the olympics.

If he came over sooner Blazers could have had a stacked core with Sabonis, Drexler, and Porter. A frontcourt of Sabonis, Buck Williams, Kevin Duckworth, and Cliff Robinson would be too much. I hate wishful thinking.

Check out Youtube for footage of Saba in his teens before he had the first of his achilles injuries. He was every bit as athletic as David Robinson and had a terrific all-around game. Sadly thanks to poor medical advice and, to some degree, treatment the achilles injuries robbed him of his athleticism but never his speed of thought and basketball nous. To have been as good as he was despite having two bum wheels is remarkable. He was a true giant of the game.
