Fan Mushed in the Face By Michael Beasley: ‘He’s a Bad Sportsman’

By now, you’ve most likely seen footage of Michael Beasley mushing a heckler in the face last night during a heated streetball game at Dyckman Park in NYC. Following the game — during which Beasley led Team 914 to victory over Team Nike, featuring Kevin Durant — the fan was understandably salty when asked about the incident with Beasley. The NY Daily News reports: “In the second half, Beasley began jawing with some fans under the baskets, at one point shouting at the crowd ‘I get paid to do this!’ One of the fans behind a metal barrier, Garland Quince, a regular at Dyckman, was targeted and approached by Beasley. The 6-10, 235-pound power forward then placed one hand on Quince’s head and shoved him backward. ‘He just mushed me. He mushed me in my face,’ Quince said. ‘I was arguing about a Kevin Durant call and he just mushed me in my face.’ The game was stopped briefly as security guards helped the situation cool down. Quince, who is more than a foot shorter than Beasley, didn’t appear injured and said he won’t press charges. He continued watching the game until the final buzzer. Asked if Beasley couldn’t handle the atmosphere at Dyckman, Quince said, ‘Nah, I just don’t think he can handle Kevin Durant.’ Before the situation was diffused, Beasley approached Quince again, but didn’t get there. ‘He was about to mush me again,’ Quince said. ‘He’s a bad sportsman.’”

Don’t see his career in the league lasting very long. Reminds me of Darius Miles & Qyntel Woods–massive talent with personalities that make it impossible to do the things necessary to be professional athletes.

  • DieselMechanic

@ Cheryl he’s more talented than those guys. Being a bad sportsman isn’t going to stop him from having a successful career.

  • http://www.nba.com/celtics lights out

beasley needs some how to not be a moron lessons.

  • Lazarus

fan would have said more than what he claims. prob a straight a duuuche

  • Riggs

Super cool beas was lucky that security was there, because things get a lil too serious at dyckman.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

I’m sorry but mush as used in this context is a damn funny word.

@cheryl I think its still a lil too early to say. But he is way better then darius miles and has way more potential. he is going to be ok.

  • bike

What, exactly does mushed in the face mean? (can’t view the footage) Softer than a punch but harder than a push? Or is it simply a hand over the face with no force applied? If he was mashed in the face that sounds serious. But mush, no, that sounds kinda weenie.

  • marc

And plus a lot more was said by the heckler some of it could have been personal.

  • Riggs

mush means you push someones face away with your open hand.

  • Jake

Maybe you shouldn’t talk trash if you can’t handle the consequences. I’m tired of people who think its ok to run their mouth all game long, then when someone acts back its suddenly not ok. He should have just hauled off and punched him imo.

  • rog23

So lemme get this straight, this dude was trash talkin beasley, then beasley confronted him and gave him a lil push and now this dudes cryin about it? Don’t let your mouth write a check your body can’t cash! Some people TALK a lot of ish but can’t back it up! KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT SON!!!!!!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I thought it was funny that the size difference between the two was noted. Like it’s Beasley’s fault that some little cat is yapping. I think Beasley was wrong and stupid to touch dude, that’s a lawsuit waiting to happen, but if you’re going to run your mouth you have to always be aware of the possibility of violence.
NOBODY would go to a regular park to hoop, and not realize that things could get violent if some guy doesn’t appreciate all your smack talk. It happens all the time. At least it did when I was hooping.

Beasley needs a lesson learned the hard way. Now everytime he plays in the hood, I would talk trash to him and have something waiting for him. All he is, is bigger and trying to be a bully to an old man is sad. Beasley career is tanking like his jumpshot. Overrated scrub, I am surprised dude did not know anyone to get it jumping at the court and TRUST ME, Beasley picked someone to mush, he knew would not fight back. BOOK IT!!

I’ve seen several videos of this tournament (thanks to slam). I don’t understand the behavior of part of the crowd and organization of this tournament. Why do people need to be on the court ? They are inside the basketball court limit… Players loose space to play and expose their ankles, as they can step on the foot of a random dude. Not respectful for the game and the players. Very very bad organization. Stupid fans should be simply kicked out of the stands by security and there should be a perimeter around the court. Isn’t it a basic thing so the players can showcase their talent and everybody (players and fans) can enjoy the game. I just don’t get it. Too much clowns around the court are trying to steal the show from the ballers and are surprisingly allowed to do so.

  • Ronald

Beasley was stupid for touching the dude. Shouldve jumped him in the parking lot.

  • Red Star

I would woop that fools ass! I would love to see him do that to me! 6’10, 235?! Please!!

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

It was stupid of Beasely, but I can understand it. People want these entertainers to be robots and have no emotion. There is only so much crap talking a person can take. He’s a man before anything else. If it wasn’t an NBA player, but just some 6’10″ hood dude there playing, the fan would have kept his mouth shut, but because its an NBA player he figured he wouldn’t react.

  • Monique

@red star iam sure the guy he pushed was not your height and weight.

  • MikeC.

I see no problem with this from a day-to-day perspective. Dude popped off and Beas reacted. It’s a lockout, so the NBA can’t suspend him or even fine him for it. The better thing for Beas to do would have been to challenge that dude to a game of 1-on-1 in front of everybody and abuse him on the court. That would have humiliated the trash-talker and vindicated Beasley without any violence involved.

“I get paid to do this!”
Not right now you don’t, son!

  • seriousblack

@dabigfundamental: It’s a real hood tourney. We’re not talking about a professional setting. Part of the appeal is that there’s a bunch of good local players battling it out. The presence of a few NBA guys here and there isn’t going to change the esssence of this event, or any other streetball event in the country. Fans go overboard sometimes. Guys react. Sh#t happens.

  • bike

Beasley should have given the jerk a weggie.

  • Riggs

    what’s a weggie. I’ve heard about wedgies.

  • el_larsen

a mush is better than trashtalk like a girl

  • Jer dawg

Beasley’s team won! Bad sportsman? What an oxymoron. Talking sportsmanship and he probably said something really bad. He’s talking about sportsmanship. The fan could’ve been a better “fan” like booing him or saying He sucks. That’s what a regular fan should do in a sporting event. Mind their p’s and q’s. Not condoning Beasley’s actions. Good thing he says he won’t press charges. He ought to just say his piece and let his game shut the fan up. Cuz he knows hecklers aren’t stepping out to play ball with those guys.

You know what I have been/still am one of Beasley’s biggest supporters, seriously though what is wrong with him? Does a random guy heckling at him at a Pro-Am game affect him THAT much? He is a PROFESSIONAL ball player, he should act like one… granted; all these misdemeanors of his are just that… little misdemeanors but they DO add up. He’s 22 now and not a rookie anymore, time to put on those big boy pants and start becoming the all star his talent suggests he could become. You just don’t see players like Kevin Durant doing this type of thing… they are ABOVE that sort of behavior. I’m not saying Beasley should be the bigger man because he is a role model… it isn’t fair to just dump all that responsibility on a person… he should be the bigger man because at the end of the day, he is making millions of dollars to be a professional ball player on and off the court.

  • MBE18

I’m not saying what Beasley did was right, but there are consequences for your actions Garland Quince.

  • http://Slamonline.com Stu

Beasley is a cool dude but he just can’t stay outta trouble. Man he has/had so much potential but it is/was wasted

  • LP

now if the fan had GOONS going after Beasley after the game, it woulda been a Lorenzen Wright situation. people gotta think….you can’t just go around disrespecting people …

  • kbj

Thats his fault he stood there and let Beas proceed with the mushing, move your face or slap his hand away at least.
