Gilbert Arenas Loses Legal Fight to ‘Basketball Wives’ Participant


A California judge threw out Gilbert Arenas’ motion to stop his ex from appearing on the show ‘Basketball Wives LA’, and made part of his decision based on Gil’ rambling Twitter feed. From the Hollywood Reporter: “A California federal judge has rejected NBA superstar Gilbert Arenas’ attempts to block VH1’s Basketball Wives and turned down a request to stop former fiancé Laura Govan from appearing on the show and mentioning his name. Further, Shed Media, the producers of the show, have successfully got the judge to grant an anti-SLAPP motion that strikes all of Arenas’ claims as an impingement of free speech except for allegations of a publicity rights infringement. There, the judge dismisses the claim, but is allowing Arenas to file an amended complaint. … Further, the judge finds there’s also fair use to Arenas’ name because there’s a matter of public interest involved. Observers might find it odd that a silly VH1 reality TV show could qualify as such importance under the First Amendment, but Judge Gee clarifies: ‘Arenas suggests that any discussion of his family life is not sufficiently related to his celebrity to render BWLA’s use of his identity a matter of public concern. This contention is belied by the tens of thousands of Twitter users who follow Arenas as he tweets about a variety of mundane occurrences.’”

    The JUDGE is basically saying: “You had a valid point about not wanting your business in the streets, but since you put your business out on your TWITTER feed, then I’m going to let her do it, too.” unfortunately Sad, but true. He can’t stop her from getting money. I follow Mr. Arenas on twitter and I can say that he INDEED DOES spill his personal guts on Twitter. The Gun charge image doesn’t help either.

    I understand not wanting her on the show and talking about his/her personal life, but a) she has the right to make money and b) it’s stuff she witnessed/went through. So she’s entitled to be able to right a book about it, do interviews or whatever else she wants to. Bottom line, as long as she states only the TRUTH, then she should be able to speak about it. If she spreads lies, then Gil should then go after her. But as long as people watch this kind of show or buy ‘tell all’ books, then this type of media will continue. One thing I bet happens is that more NBA players and celebrities in general will start having woment sign that they won’t disclose certain type of personal information/stories to the public. I think Bosh and D-12 had these types of agreements and used them to stop their X’s from appearing on the show. Heck I know I wouldn’t want my business on the street either, but without a contract, there isn’t anyway to stop somebody from talking.

    Hey these hoes have to eat too. I think it’s unfair for guys to try to stop them. My girl loves this crappy show, and I was once forced to watch nearly an entire episode. One thing I noticed is that all these washed up broads are your typical groupie types who lucked out by getting knocked up by a pro ball player. How can anybody be mad at them? Be mad that these dumb a** players that either wifed these broads or allowed them to get pregnant. These girls are hustlas and I can’t hate a hustla. And let’s face it, it’s not like these pro athletes should be winning husband of the year awards, so you are who you date/marry. None of these girls were saints when these players met them and the guys knew it. I hope they all get their bread while they can because what little good looks they have won’t last forever.

    Seriously, they couldn’t find five good looking “wives” in all of LA?
    This is a pathetic group of women…plain, fat, ghetto and stupid…not a good mix for a successful show…The best one on the show is Draya, at least she’s real.
