Luke Walton Already Planning His Retirement

Luke Walton’s new assistant coach gig at Memphis isn’t just some lockout stunt. The Lakers’ forward knows that his playing days are numbered, and coaching may be something he seriously pursues once his NBA career ends. From the OC Register: “Even though he’s just 31 – the same age as Pau Gasol – Walton is being proactive in pursuing his post-playing life. Walton will start a new full-time job Saturday as an assistant coach at the University of Memphis for as long as the NBA lockout lasts. ‘Unfortunately, for every player there comes the end of his career,’ Walton said, ‘and it’s just something I’ve been thinking about.’ Josh Pastner, Walton’s former teammate at the University of Arizona and the hotshot head coach at Memphis co-authoring the new chapter in Walton’s life, puts it more definitively. ‘He does want to coach when he’s done playing,’ Pastner said of Walton. Even though Walton has always cringed at comparisons to his oft-injured father Bill and good-naturedly blamed me one time for reporting Phil Jackson’s description of him as a ‘toilet-tissue player,’ there is no doubt now that Walton’s body has undermined his playing career. He has had a variety of injuries throughout and now is dealing with a back so bad that it was a major victory for him just to be available at the end of last season – even though he didn’t play a minute in the Lakers’ postseason until four minutes of truly malodorous garbage time in that fourth and final game in Dallas.”

    Hahaha u guys are mean

This reminds me of Bill Murray “retiring” @ the end of Space Jam. But @ least Bill tripped a Mon-Star.

Despite being a ‘toilet tissue player’, I’d say ‘ole Luke had a pretty good run. He’s making about 7 million/year, living in L.A., plays for the Lakers, and will have no trouble finding a coaching gig when he hangs it up. His biggest nemesis was his name and dad.

lmao @HAMMER…. Bill Murray was hilarious in Space Jam.

  • goattree

@bike – not to mention a championship ring

@goattree- a few championship rings. And walton is going to be a decent coach. he was the player on the lakers who played the triangle the best. Great bball iq

Luke Walton’s sole purpose to be on the Lakers was to slay hot girls left and right. I’d take that job.

  • T-Money

bike: his biggest asset was his name and his dad. he wouldn’t be in the league without them.

Why does anyone care that he’s retiring again?

  • http://Slamonline.com Datkid

Lol… That was mean.. Out of curiosity how good would he have been without the bad back tho?

  • DieselMechanic

Luke knows his role and has always made good decisions when called on. I appreciate having guys like that on the roster for the team I root for. Dude will make a great coach some day.

  • chingy

    He has a degree, right?…

  • larrylegend

Every team could use a healthy Luke.

  • Michael

As a laker fan i’ll always respect Luke for being one of only three playes to not quit doing the 06-07 season. He had a damn good year that season 11, 7 ,and 4, 43% from three.

  • http://slamonline.com Tae

He’s not retiring yet yall. As a Lakers fan i’ve always liked Luke too, but wat kind of contract does he have? He’s been with us forever

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

Luke payed well in spurts with Lakers and when given proper minutes during games. As a Laker fan, he needs to be traded or retire to give the Lakers some cap room or use his money for another piece. BOOK IT!!

  • Towelie

    Good riddance.

  • Kid Viscious

What is he retiring from? The Bench? Wow what an upgrade I guess

  • Geezy

All this hate and dude still probably made more money than 90% of yall will in a lifetime #truth
