Melo League Beat Goodman League Despite Kevin Durant’s 59 Points

by Marcel Mutoni@marcel_mutoni

Kevin Durant continued his summer ball rampage last night, dropping in a game-high 59 points in the best (and most hyped) exhibition of the lockout so far.

Unfortunately for Durant and DC’s Goodman League, the jaw-dropping performance came in a 149-141 loss.

KD did most of his damage while being guarded by LeBron James (who was no slouch himself, leading his squad with 32 points) but was outmatched by the Melo League’s sheer star power.

The Washington Post reports:

“Playing against those guys was a lot of fun for me. I’m excited I got that opportunity playing against some great players, playing with some great players as well,” Durant said after his team lost, 149-141, in a game that was lopsided until the final five minutes.

Durant was aided by NBA players Jeff Green, Trevor Austin Daye, Roger Mason Jr., and Jarrett Jack, but the matchup against the Melo All-Stars was incredibly unfair — especially with DeMarcus Cousins and Jennings failing to appear, for some reason, placing more pressure on Durant. The Melo all-stars also had the high-flying Eric Bledsoe and Josh Selby, and the sharp-shooting Gary Neal to carry the load when the Big Three wasn’t lighting up the scoreboard.

Durant scored 59 points, but for most of the night, it felt like watching the Eastern Conference Finals, when James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh combined to make Derrick Rose resemble a helpless one-way show. [Goodman League commissioner and master of ceremony for the night], Miles Rawls mentioned during the third quarter that Durant was “doing everything but cleaning the floor” but he couldn’t outscore James, Paul and Anthony all alone.

With no official NBA action expected to take place anytime soon, there’s no telling just how many more of these kinds of games stars from the L will take part in. According to Kevin Durant, though, he’s not ready to slow down just yet.

“Whenever there’s a big game, I’m ready to play,” Durant said.

KD did his thang though but I’m tired of these “exhibition” games being hyped up and talked about like actual NBA games. I don’t know how much I can take, I want to watch real games where defense is actually being played.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I read that Durant shot 13-39. That can’t be true right.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Some defense might have been played last night, but it certainly wasn’t by Bron. Sounds like he got lit up.
Also, how much do these games actually mean for Durant, he dominated against better overall competition last summer at the worlds, and came back down to earth during the regular season. By back down to earth i mean phenomenal, but during the worlds he liked like the best player in the world.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

The scoreboard read 149-141 at the end of the night and you concluded that “some” defense was played last night. ¿Qué

  • Jesse

They mean a lot for Durant in terms of increasing his popularity and marketability. In terms of basketball what do they mean for him well probably not much but that’s to be expected they are after all exhibition games.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Eboy

Lebron had 42 not 32…..not that it matters.

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

LOL JENNINGS PULLED A NO-SHOW. SOUNDS LIKE A FUN GAME TO WATCH. SELBY AND NEAL VS ANYONE WOULDVE BEEN SICK BY ITSELF.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Was Jennings scared of being ‘cooked’ again by Josh Selby? That is the question.

  • Patrick

^Without question, that’s on the regular.

  • http://Nba.com GP23

What hasn’t kevin durant done this summer?.. Daaamm the dude has been killin’ it !

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

I concluded that some defense might have been played. I can’t say for definite I wasn’t there. Durant “cooked” Bron though, that is evident from the high lights.

  • AD

cp3 melo and lebron on the smae team…… lol dats crazyy

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I knew nothing about this Josh Selby cat before all this summer ball since I don’t watch the NCAA, so can somebody explain to me why he tumbled in the draft?
Also, it’s unfair for a man of Durant’s size to have that sort of handle. It’s just unfair.

  • http://slamonline.com AllBall

Teams are going to have to start employing some one just to match up with Durant 2/3/4 times a year. That guy could probably play against Dirk too.

  • SikhWitIt

Much respect to KD, dude’s passion for the game is clear

  • http://www.slamonline.com spit hot fiyah

@allenp bacause he sucked at kansas

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

That shelby cat was a huge steal for MEM in the 2nd round. Dude was a Top-5 recruit and ranked #1 by Rivals coming out of HS, it just didn’t pan out for him at Kansas (suspensions and limited playing time) but dude got Rose/Russ-like athleticism. It will be nice to see what MEM does with him because he could be a nice change of pace/style to conley.

  • Detroit Dave

How has Allen Iverson managed to be invisible this whole summer? These games would re-create a buzz for him.

  • John Frusciante

    @JTaylor21 – stop dude.

  • EtheKnickfan

Parents need not worry. After I finish this blunt I will be your kids role model.

  • http://cnbc.com JTaylor21

    是什麼

  • logues

JTaylor: Rose/Russ-like athleticism??? whatever ur smoking i want some

  • robb

    Josh “the cook” Selby. Nice.

  • Sizzle

Selby isn’t on the Rose/Russ Athleticism level, but as far as point guards go in the NBA, he appears to be in the upper echelon. Keep in mind though all we have to go off of really is the games in the summer where no one plays defense. It will be difficult for him to play like that in the league where teams “load the lane” up against guards…

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

I didn’t realize he played point guard. Now I see what the problem is.

I was at the game and it was pretty entertaining. As for the Lebron/KD matchup, it was clear who was taking it more seriously. KD was attacking Lebron everytime he touched it, where Lebron really only went at KD, AFTER KD scored and the crowd egged him on. But make no mistake, Lebron scored on KD pretty much anytime he wanted too. He would just back him down and lay it in over him like he wasn’t even there, in addition to a lot of nice jumpers and fadeaways. KD had a lot of nice moves himself, but it was mostly jumpshots. I’m not sure what he shot, but it was more than 40 FGAs for sure. He only shot like 6 freethrows.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Selby seems to have a nice game, but he’s like a 6’2 shooting guard which is why he slipped so far. He can get up tho, had a nice 360 alley-oop. I was really impressed with Austin Daye tho, that kid has game. He just needs more confidence. He scored pretty much everytime he touched it, but he was reluctant to shoot. His jumper is textbook, nothing but net everytime. Gary Neal can shoot his butt off too.

  • Showtime

I really think Bjennings wouldve showd out if he came..it must be something with Kd..what happen to wall and demar and the rest of the guard play .it simple see that the superfriend would get this hands down. Out maned & out gunned.. Shelby slip because he scoring combo guard not a point ..so that means whit his limited height he can only score a d wagner type.that what happen at kansas couldn’t found his role If he learn to pass kid would be amazing. But he do have rose/russ bouce just not their body control..

  • jayb

highlights look sick! durant took peeps to school. that said heard we get more drew league games! unlike what jennings wants….let kobe play!!!

  • http://slamonline.com Allenp

So you found the money for tickets D France? Did you spring for floor seats?

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Nah, but to yesterdays point, not too many young kids there watching. Mostly men like myself with full time jobs, college kids and females looking for a quick come up. lol. Also a few people that would never be caught in that neighborhood otherwise. By the time I got out of work, the floor seat were gone, but its a smaller college gym so most views were decent enough, probably wouldn’t have paid the extra 60 for them anyway.

  • http://slamonline.com nbk

Selby can’t play any defense. And I don’t think he can run an NBA system, not as a point guard.

  • http://slamonline.com Neitel

KD! Respect!!! im been collecting KD cards for a minute now…ima get super busy on getting more, specially his rookie card!! which i got a few by the way. The Melo league was stacked, but cousins and jennings should have been there!!! I want video footage!!!!!

  • http://www.slamonline.com UNFROZEN CAVEMAN LAWYER

SELBY’S GAME IS QUITE SIMILAR TO GIL’S. HE CAN SCORE WHENEVER HE FEELS, BUT HE CAN ALSO RUN A TEAM. HE HAD TO SIT OUT A BUNCH OF GAMES AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON, GOT INJURED, AND WASNT GOING TO GET CRAZY TOUCHES ON BILL SELF’S TEAM. HE HAS DEF POINT GUARD SKILLS, NEEDS TO IMPROVE DEFENSIVELY, BUT WHAT ROOKIE DOESNT? HE HAS AN INCREDIBLYH HIGH CEILING. HE SLIPPED IN THE DRAFT BECAUSE SCOUTS WERENT PAYING CLOSE ATTENTION TO HIS GAME, BUT MORE TO HIS SITUATION.

  • landry_Legend

did jennings not show up bc of KD’s comment on twitter about Chef Selby cookin him on the reg?

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

This Selby/Jennings thing is turning out to be a pretty entertaining aspect of the summer. The more Jennings shies away from it, the more the belief grows. The Chef = Hibachi reloaded!

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

I wish Jennings would have showed, Goodman really didn’t have any guards to match up with the Melo league trio of Selby, Paul and Bledsoe.

  • Feez22

Guys… Jennings didn’t show up because his team wasn’t there. Remember… Jennings plays on that L.A. team i believe. He plays with derozan, mcgee, etc. I think this was the melo team vs. the DC team with a few additions. Basically home team in DMV vs. away team in the melo all stars. When goodman faces dyckman again jennings will play.

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Hey was slated to play tho. All of the postings about the game listed him playing on the Goodman team. They could have been wrong tho as he did play against Goodman in the other game.

  • RickWitIt

Did Eddy Curry play? How’d he do? Or was he just slapping as many backsides as possible?

  • Blaze

Who is the idiot that is saying he only made 13 field goals while taking 6 freethrows? And who is the idiot that believes that?

    That mathematically impossible.

13 x 2 is 26 points alone. Plus 6 free throws only adds up to 32 points if he made all of them.

Even if all his made field goal was 3 pointers, it only adds up to 45 points.

The only way to reach 59 points if all his made baskets were three pointers then 13 X 3 would equal 39 plus 20 free-throws or he got 33 freethrows with 13 made 2pt field goals.

One scenario is impossible the others are implausible!

  • http://sdklflc.com Jukai

Blaze: Who is the idiot who combined what two people said into one post?

  • http://www.kb24.com The Seed

KD put 59 points on LePippen and people are talking about Brandon Jennings. What is America coming too?

  • http://sdklflc.com Jukai

If Kobe was on the receiving end of KD, The Seed would be talking about Kobe just “going for that W”

  • http://www.slamonline.com KobeDoinWork

Allen Iverson should defintaly get off his ass and play in these games if hes serious about that comeback it would do him wonders…. people are tweeting that AI is in Israel to sign with an Israeli team…lol

  • http://www.twitter.com/dfrance21 dfrance21

Rick: Eddie Curry was not in attendance. Yeah Blaze you just did a whole lotta math for no reason.

  • MLK4Life

Our Olympic team in 2012 will be extremely close to the Dream Team if everyone decides to play. Add in D-Rose, Deron Williams and a few of the guys from last summer’s Gold Medal team, I foresee some dangerous blowouts from Team USA.

  • http://www.slamonline.com Nick Tha Quick

Does Greivis Vasques watch tapes of the summer leagues and see Josh Selby killing it and think f*%#. There goes my backup spot.

  • http://sdklflc.com Jukai

Nick Tha Quick: I’m not sure Greivis has time to watch any tapes of the Summer League games cause he’s too busy dropping 16-10-9 against the DR and 26-7 against Brazil in the FIBA Americas.

  • http://slamonline.com Mars

No more LeBron wannabes. Everybody gonna want to be Durant come game time. I still think BJennings’,Derozen, and NY (Nick Young) game are flithy. KD got in BJennings’ head probably with that funny tweetbeef. Selby cooking BJ on the regular…”C’Mon Kevin be serious”… like C’Mon man, why you calling me out?? LMFAO

  • Landry_legend

There are only practice games were talking about…were talking about practice
    In ai’s terms
