Roadblocks for NBA Players to Play in China During Lockout?

According to Sina Sports, the Chinese Basketball Association isn’t too thrilled about NBA players wanting to temporarily join their teams as they wait for the lockout to end. From NIU Bball: “Earlier [Sunday afternoon], Sina Sports, quoting an anonymous figure connected to the CBA, reported that the Chinese Basketball Association is planning to institute two special new rules for next season in response to the ever-growing list of NBA players who have declared interest towards playing in China: First, teams will not be allowed to include an out-clause into any contract with an active NBA player and second, that each team will be allowed to sign only one active NBA player. Said the anonymous source, ‘The CBA isn’t the NBA’s backyard. If we didn’t make a rule about players playing here temporarily, then they’d all just leave in the middle of the season. That would affect our season greatly.’ As of yet, the CBA has not responded to the story. Any official announcement over new CBA rules is unlikely to come before the league’s committee convenes for a policy meeting in August.”

These chinese losers should just be happy that nba players are willing to play there. Gives the fans some excitement in the chinese league. Chinese players all suck, so be grateful instead of complaining!!!

They make an interesting point. It’s hard to have hyped up rosters and then halfway through the season everything changes. You could have teams high in the standings because of their NBA players, but when the NBAers leave the top teams could be in the playoffs but suck. It’s a tough position to be in as a league.

wow kobe. none of that was racist. at all.

but at the same time it gives fans a chance to see some good players for a change… they should be grateful instead of complaining because their league sucks balls.

that’s just honesty… I am sorry but the glass should be half full instead of empty…

I understand how signing Charlie V too a temp deal wouldn’t necessarily be good. However, I feel denying a legit NBA star from joining their ranks just sounds like bad business. Feels a bit xenophobic.

I think this is a good move by the CBA. They have their own league to run and they can’t count on the NBA players for any set length of time. Why give a roster spot to a guy that might stick around for the season, but is more likely to be gone by December? Then that roster spot was wasted and they’re scrambling to fill it from a shallow talent pool. Contracts with no out-clauses are good. If the NBA players want to play in the CBA, they’ll have to commit for at least a full season. CBA management is just protecting their product.

do they think they are on par with the NBA?

@add – if that last post was for me, my answer is ‘no’. The CBA isn’t anywhere close to the NBA for talent. I’m looking at this from a purely business standpoint. I have a store to run, and I’ve had some very talented applicants who are only looking for summer work. Since I have to plan for next month and next year, I’m not going to hire those people who are only sticking around for a couple months. I can take someone with less talent and work with them over time to develop the talent they do have. I’d rather have someone I can count on for next year than someone who will tear it up for 2 months, then bounce. I think that’s how the CBA managers are looking at it. Short-term boost with NBA players, but long-term harm by losing a season developing long-term talent that will stick around.

Old Chinese proverb: ‘Man who speak with forked tongue should not kiss basketball’.

I’m a little confused here, each team can have one active nba player but they can’t leave when the lockouts over? Reminds me of Bronx tale, “now yous can’t leave”.

They should just forget about the lockout and #freetheleague!

  • lol

They should go to the Flip basketball league where there no one over 5 ft tall. Kobe can play the center. LMAO
