Several NBA Players Returning to School During Lockout

If there’s any positive outcome of this NBA lockout, it’s that some players are getting back into the classroom (and a few more thinking of doing the same.) From Yahoo! Sports: “UCLA’s American Popular Culture class now has four out-of-work NBA players – Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook, Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love, New Orleans Hornets forward Trevor Ariza and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Baron Davis – among its students. In addition, Milwaukee Bucks forward Luc Mbah a Moute is taking two classes this summer. Having begun their professional careers, all of the players are paying for their tuition and books. After playing at UCLA together, Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook are now sharing an American Popular Culture class on campus … Ariza, Love, Westbrook, Davis and Mbah a Moute aren’t the only NBA players who have gone back to school this summer. Minnesota Timberwolves forward Anthony Randolph has rented an apartment in Baton Rouge within walking distance of Louisiana State University. He is currently enrolled in a math class and has signed up to take three classes in the fall. He has no plans to play overseas … ‘I want to pursue career in coaching when I’m done playing,’ Randolph said. ‘But I have to have a degree to do that.’”

This is the most interesting lockout ever. Glad to see higher learning take place….

Great to hear some news that sheds a positive light on the players for a change.

  • ben

KG was never able to pass his SAT so no college for him.

Well, I’m going to once again tip my own cap…
    I was RIGHT.
You DO need a degree to coach.
    Shout out @Allenp…
    I TOLD you.

  • Bimmer

Those UCLA students in that class are some lucky mofos. You think the NBA guys sit together in the back of the class, making jokes and stuff. It would be a fun class.

  • Red

LeBron, KG & Kobe to college? ROFLMAO!

  • tdot

lol @ “Popular culture” lectures being construed as “higher learning”. That’s a bird course.

Philo – you need a degree to be a college head coach. Not an assistant, and no degree is required to coach in the NBA.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    @nbk:
All that I was saying was that in order to become a coach, at least a bachelor’s degree is required.
And also, name me a coach in The League who does not possess a degree.

idk, maybe Mark Jackson? I know a lot of guys degrees have nothing to do with sports at all. Like I looked up Tyron Corbin (and a few younger coaches who played in the league) and he has a degree in computer science. But IDK Philo of any without a degree.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

Mark Jackson has a degree, too…

fa sho, I just didn’t know if he finished his last year at St. Johns, that’s why I asked. A lot of the guys I couldn’t really find info on, but they went to school for 4 years so I just assume they all have some type of degree.

  • http://philosopher.view@blogspot.com The Philosopher

    Exactly.

  • Yesse

Guys, i don’t think we want to see Kobe with young white girls in college.

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

So, does this mean Russell Westbrook will finally pass?

  • http://www.twitter.com/nflem41 Nicolas Fleming

Little known fact, Russ actually stole KD’s backpack and is taking all of his classes at UT for him, too.

Good to see these guys get their education on, but honestly they don’t need it anymore. I think some of them just miss the college life and its perks.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

LOVE to see these kids going back to school, but “American Popular Culture”?
Come on! Take a REAL class, y’all.

  • bike

Maybe they see themselves as an owner someday. Does an owner need a college degree?

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

@bike – out of all those guys mentioned above, none of them will ever make enough to become a full-fleged majority owner of an NBA team.

  • seriousblack

Dope. Even though it’s American Pop Culture that they’re taking lol.

  • bike

@Enigmatic. Ever read Mark Cuban’s biography? He came from almost nothing and worked his way up to being one of America’s wealthiest people. Seems like an NBA player would have a huge start over someone like Cuban. However, taking American Pop Culture probably ‘aint a good start should one desire to be an owner.

Bike – out of all those guys mentioned above, none of them will ever be able to go back in time and create a website that can be sold to Yahoo! for billions during the dot-com boom of the late 90′s.

  • seriousblack

^^^They don’t need to go back in time, they could participate in the current dot com bubble that’s gonna burst in a few months.

  • Allenp

Rod Strickland? Pat Ewing? I would have to do some research.

  • Allenp

Enigmatic some people don’t want to think.

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

    I hear ya, Allen.

  • fizzbucket

*KG gets A on term paper* “AAAAAAGAGHHHGAGGAGAGAGAGAA!!!!!!!!!!! CELTICS, HOOAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!” *chest pound*

  • http://tempdog1 stephen

Nicolas Fleming you made me chuckle

  • Vince5

KG in philo: “Anything is possiblllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Remo Williams

Lebron wont pass ANY college class… (wait for it)… because he’s going to quit during the finals.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

Ewing has a degree in fine art from Georgetown.
@bike – Cuban’s “almost nothing” is radically different to the “almost nothing” that a whole lot of NBA players come from. Cuban’s suburban hometown has one of the best public school systems in America, and the mean household income is relatively high for a town of it’s size and location. A lot of NBA players don’t come from an ‘almost nothing’ that beneficial.

  • iCARNACKi

Nothing but thugs who get paid an obscene amount to play a game, they’ll get into nothing but trouble if there is a lockout… AMIRITE? Take THAT racist sports media. Score one for the good guys.

  • Coney Islander

I still say they pool up and make their own league. The old ways of doing things must die.

  • http://bulls.com airs

    cosign UGH.

  • BostonBaller

Degree or not, once you’ve played in the L for some time and you show an aptitude for coaching you may get a shot…especially since a number of current, past and future coaches will do so with degrees from a wide range of things aside from sports. As far as throwing Kobe and KG in the convo about going back to school just to dig at them is a bit silly since they’ve been in the L for some time. LBJ on the other hand is still young and could probably benefit more from schooling.
