Shaquille O’Neal Learning How to Direct Movies

Shaq won’t be content in retirement from the NBA just trading barbs with Charles Barkley on the TNT set. The big fella is enrolled at the NY Film Academy, learning to become a director. TMZ reports (and has grainy footage of O’Neal goofing off on set): “Shaquille O’Neal is giving the movie biz another shot — yes, even after ‘Kazaam’ and ‘Steel’ — and this time he wants to be a director! Shaq is about to complete the Filmmaking Conservatory at the New York Film Academy’s branch at Universal Studios Hollywood. Shaq’s been very hands-on during directing and cinematography classes — walking his crew through stunts … and shooting on the studio’s famous back lot. According to the school, Shaq has been ‘incredibly humble, funny, and likable’”

It’s going to be interesting to see what he does with all his spare time. My guess he’ll direct a basketball movie with a storyline very similar to his life/times – not necessarily a biography, but a fiction work that has similarities. Written, produced, directed by Shaq with special guest appearances by Shaq an a bunch of other HOF’s.

I think Shaq would be an effective director at the beginning of filming. He would then disappear for the next few months, only to reappear at half-capacity near the end of production. Whoever hires Shaq to direct his film should expect Troy Murphy and Glen Davis to do the bulk of the directing.

Shaq should do a movie about his life and let the dude from The Blind Side play him.

If his directing skills are anywhere near “Steel”

    …he’ll be terrible.

Didn’t he already direct his own sextape??

@AL29 – Or possibly he’ll be the biggest rookie director in a decade, smashing box office records all across America, pulling down cinema screens with the weight of metaphor alone, then relocate to LA and win Best Picture at Cannes three years straight, taking out Best Director and Best Screenplay at Sundance while averaging a staggering $1.1 billion at the box office per film. Then he’ll relocate to Miami and make an amazing comeback by letting a young star carry the film, but have a falling out with the producer trying to get the sequels done, at which point he’ll have a mediocre career which will define him in the minds of people who have no idea who or what he achieved in his prime.
(Did you see what I did there?)

@Ugh: relax. We all know Shaq was great in his prime. I even think he was great during his only full season in Phoenix. But he really sucked at the end and it was depressing.

Kazaam 2 is coming, trust me!
