Toronto Raptors Strongly Considering Kevin Pritchard for GM

The Toronto Raptors have narrowed their GM search down to four candidates, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com. The latest name to surface is former Portland Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard, who currently holds a front office position with the Indiana Pacers. Via The Score: “The Toronto Raptors have narrowed their search for a new General Manager down to four… Three names in the mix – Ed Stefanski, Jeff Bower and Dennis Lindsey – were already known to be in the running for the job, but Aldridge’s report includes a new name in former Portland Trail Blazers executive Kevin Pritchard. According to the report, Pritchard is ‘a strong candidate’ for the position. Pritchard was the Blazers General Manager from 2007 to 2010, recording a .500 record or better in three straight seasons. He is currently working in the player personnel department for the Indiana Pacers, but the report indicates that he can leave his position if he obtains a General Manager job with another franchise.”

what’s happening in portland that their recently fired GMs are being snatched everywhere (cho, pritchards)? is paul allen that difficult to please? the issue is clearly not competence.

Figured we’d hear a big ‘hooray’ from the oddly large numbers of Raptor fans prowling the internet.

Why Pritchard? Paul Allen dumped loads of money so that the Blazers could buy picks and combined with all of the other top first round picks – what did Pritchard actually achieve. Pritchard was able take a flyer on picking Brandon Roy and his bad knee, because he was able to pick (swap) for Aldridge earlier with the second pick of the 2006 draft. Instead of taking Durant with his 1st pick of the next big draft, he rolled the dice on Greg Oden, who (at 7 ft 2 inches and 19 years) was already dealing with fairly constant knee problems. The Blazers didn’t can Pritchard because he was helping to bring the team a championship.

    Colangelo seemed like a politician.

I’m with zoo, I thought we resigned colangelo for another two years just before the draft?

@vince – BC is still there, but I think he’s President of Basketball Operations or something. He probably still has the final word on all player movements. Dude’s pretty crafty though – he can blame Pritchard or whoever is the next GM if everything falls apart, and take credit for their successes if things go right. Hopefully MLSE can see past this and if the team still has no direction in 2 years when BC’s contract is up, then they keep the GM and let go of Colangelo.

  • Bapper

BC is the president and GM but he is going to hire a new GM and just be the president, he will still have the final say in anything
