Jay-Z to Help Design the Brooklyn Nets’ New Uniforms

The Jigga Man won’t just be helping to entertain the crowds at Nets games in Brooklyn; the team’s minority owner will also help figure out what the players will wear on the court. From the NY Post: “He’s not only part-owner of the soon-to-be Brooklyn Nets — he’s helping design their uniforms, too. Rap mogul Jay-Z — co-founder of the hip clothing line Rocawear — is working with Nets brass and Adidas to design uniforms for the team when it moves into the under-construction Barclays Center in Brooklyn next year, Nets officials told the Post yesterday. Jay-Z and team officials had gathered near the arena construction site to announce that the New Jersey Nets team would be renamed the ‘Brooklyn Nets.’ … Jay Z, Adidas and the Nets are currently ironing out a logo for the Brooklyn Nets and deciding what colors their uniforms should be. No matter what, the logo will feature Brooklyn prominently because the club wants to tap into the borough’s world-popular brand name, officials said. The Nets’ current logo features the word ‘Nets’ hovering over a basketball. ‘Brooklyn will be involved in whatever we do,’ said Fred Mangione, chief marketing officer for the Nets and Barclays Center. The team’s colors — currently red, silver, white and navy blue — will likely be changed, officials said.”

  • eZ

I think it’s lame that apparently neighbourhood names are allowed to be part of team names. What will be next, the Hollywood Clippers and the South Beach Heat?
That’s whack, it should be New York Nets and nothing else : /

  • eZ

Oh and ‘Brooklyn’ is NOT a world-popular brand name. Some people have their own heads too far up their own asses, and Prokhorov (sp?) will lose serious international income for not being able to use the truly world famous name of New York City. I tought he wanted to build a global brand but it seems Jay-Z is getting a green light for his own child ‘Hood fantasy…dissapointing.

This is great. I hope they look good.

    AD is probably right.

The New York Nets just sounds stupid we might as well call them the “California ” Warriors then. Who doesnt know Brooklyn is in New York? If you dont remember we did have a team called the brooklyn dodgers. I bet wherever you live “ez” that you can buy a shirt or hat that says Brooklyn on it. They are trying to bring some excitement to the team and re-invent themselves and connect with the fans that will be attending games. I bet Brooklyn is better known than whatever crap town your from

  • http://www.bulls.com Enigmatic

eZ probably thought Biggie was being literal when he would ask “where Brooklyn at?!”

  • NJ4Life

You guys do know that Brooklyn is the 4th biggest market in the nation right? 4th. On its own. Not including NYC.

And to bash your point that Brooklyn is a joke compared to NYC: everyone knows about the Brooklyn Dodgers. Everyone. And people STILL rock BK Dodgers gear to this day. So let’s stop pretending this wasn’t a good move.

I’m willing to bet the Nets are top 3 in merchandise after the move.

eZ, next thing you know they have a team saying they represent ‘Golden State’.
Getting back on topic, I’ve been looking forward to the rebranding of the Nets for years.

  • http://thetroyblog.com Teddy-the-Bear

The Nets WERE “the New York Nets” at one point. The Knicks were kinda douches about it, though.

  • T-Money

not saying that “brooklyn’ will hurt them but it is absolutely not a world-popular brand name. it may create buzz in the states but outside of north america, no one will care that it’s brooklyn instead of new york.

  • http://slamonline.com Ugh

@T-Money: Dude, I’d love to see how Americans and non-Americas compare at finding Brooklyn on a map.

  • C Da Tyrant

jigga gon introduce ads on jerseys in da nba, shameless plug

  • kantankruz

Prokhorov is going to be making so much friggin money off the new arena that I don’t think he would really care what they are called. “Call dem ze Long Island Nets, I don’t give crap!”

  • bnets

    Brooklyn Nets!

  • http://slamonline.com everything

biggie and jay made “brooklyn” a household name worldwide. im from the philippines and i know brooklyn keeps on taking it.

  • riggs

@T-Money: whenever i went out of the country with the military, i was always asked if i was either from Harlem or Brooklyn. Dont know where you get your opinion from. This is a long time coming and i’m glad they are finally getting rid of that boring logo and colors, I suggested they did this move as soon as they said they were moving to brooklyn. Also co-sign NJ4LIFE, thanks for bringing facts to the discussion.

@duhwinning: I don’t remember the brooklyn dodgers, i thought they were from la? Anyway I’m not bashing Brooklyn I just think it isn’t a global brand and even though it might be known it doesn’t really have any emotion attached to it Like NYC, internationally. I mean, 90% of the NYC tourists only visit manhattan. I’m from the ‘crap’ town of amsterdam, is that known any better worldwide than brooklyn? No clue actually. But you know I wish everybody well, but to pretend that Brooklyn is as known or strong a ‘brand’ name like NYC is not realistic.

    @enigmatic: YES!!

@Lahuey: I forgot about golden state, always thought that weird, they should be the oakland warriors, but ofcourse they want to claim the sanfrancisco and san jose markets as well.

    @Tmoney: I think so yes.

@everything: household names? really? I’m guessing you are somewhere in your 30s? I know many 14-20 year olds that don’t even know who ‘Biggie’ was. And that goes for everyone above the age of 60 too btw. The youths are dancing on the beats of ‘Like a G6′ while my dad thinks ‘Gangstersparadise’ was Stevie Wonder on crack.
Let’s rename the LA Clippers to the Compton Clippers,..hey NWA made that ‘hood a worldfamous brand after all.

  • http://slamonline.com everything

@eZ it may have been a reach but im sure 14-20 year olds still know who jay-z is. those above 60, most probably not but are they the NBA’s target audience? i dont think so.
brooklyn may not be a global brand like new york, london, paris, or tokyo, but so are oklahoma city and charlotte and minnesota. i mean people outside the states only know these other cities because of the players that play for them or the owner in the case of charlotte.
brooklyn has that potential to be a household name. they have a rapper promoting them, they have a russian billionaire for an owner, and they have dwill playing for them.
before blake griffin arrived, the la clippers were considered as the lesser la team, a team b at least here in the philippines. i guess the nets are trying to avoid that stigma.

  • http://slamonline.com everything

it also helps that a certain brooklyn decker was on the cover of a famous magazine’s swimsuit issue.

  • eZ

: ) good points. The team will be well known no doubt. After reading AllenP’s article I also understand better as to why the team name must feature ‘brooklynn’.
